Thanks for the detailed information. Can anyone give any idea why Pulsar RS200 was not mentioned in the sales chart for Bajaj motorcycle line up?

Great info compilation! Surprised to see Pulsar 125cc doing decent numbers, real life market dynamics are pretty weird in India.

Woah! Honda CB350 has been rejected by the masses, it seems. From 4500+ in Nov it has gone down to 1500 odd in Dec...or am I missing something?

These are factory dispatch numbers and NOT retail sales so to arrive at any conclusion, best is to observe for a few months on how the trend is in terms of dispatch numbers.

Re: December 2020: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks for sharing a4anurag. I have one more suggestion for the presentation of the data but it might make sense to wait a few quarters to implement it. Can we get an average (12 month?) at the end in a new column alongside the MoM change? I always find that metric to be pretty useful to do a quick visual comparison of the numbers. Since we didnt get any information for April / May 2020, having it now may not make sense. Or maybe it does to have an average from June 2020 to month to date. Just throwing it out there.

As for the numbers, it is really depressing reading. From the dispatch highs of October, we saw a 22.08% MoM drop to November and now we have a further 29.52% drop to December. If we look at October and December, that is a staggering 45.01% drop in dispatches. Admittedly Decembers numbers tend to be low but still it looks as though the October numbers were more of a push from the companies rather than a pull from the market.

As far as the major players go, only Royal Enfield has stemmed the tide with a positive growth (10.85%) while Honda (-41.34%) and Bajaj (-31.64%) have performed worse than the industry average drop of 29.52%.

Once again, there is very little positive news to find amid all the doom and gloom.

- Bajaj
The Duke 125 is the only bike that grew in dispatches. KTMs pricing has been going higher and higher. I wonder if the price premium is moving potential KTM customers down the ladder to the 125, where earlier they could have gone for the 200 instead.
The lower capacity Bajaj bikes have taken a big hit in volumes.
Even the Pulsar 125 which was performing well seems to have lost some steam.
The two Dominars seem to be struggling as well.
The Husky brand has been an unmitigated disaster.

- Hero
A drop of 1,50,924 units in a single month! For context, that drop is more than Bajaj's total dispatches for December.
Like Bajaj, the lower capacity bikes have taken a big hit. The same is for the scooters.
The Xpulse volumes have stabilized and the numbers arent impressive. Has the toll of the quality complaints started to catch up with the capable platform?
The Xtreme 200R got off to a good start but has fizzled out.
Hero needs to move up the chain for the long run. If they dont get behind the 200cc bikes and improve their quality, they will forever be stuck in the sub 200cc segment.

- Honda
A drop of 1,70,596 units in a single month makes Hero's losses look palatable in comparison.
Dispatches of the unflappable Activa dropped by 91,745 units.
What happened to the CB350? If they have such long waiting periods, these dispatch numbers dont make sense. Hopefully it is a one off.

- Kawasaki
The Z900 numbers are back to what it was before November.
Who are the 12 people who ordered Versys 1000s?
The Ninja 1000 continues to be a decent seller. It is a super sensible big bike.

Piaggio
The SR160 seems to have struck the right note in the market. Still early days for the product.

Royal Enfield
Despite news that the new J series engine is going into the older 350cc bikes, all of them have done well.
The Meteor is going from strength to strength.

Suzuki
The capable Burgman took a massive hit in the numbers.
17 VStroms got dispatched, Kawasaki had 21 Versys 650s in the same month. The middleweight adventure touring segment will hopefully keep growing.

Triumph
Another poor month for Triumph after two strong months of dispatches.
15 Bonnieville T100 bikes in a month is most unusual. I wont be surprised if they are display bikes and not actual sales.

TVS
A bad month for the Jupiter and Apache series of bikes. TVS has been pushing innovation into the premium lower capacity segments and deserve more success.
The RR310 cant seem to catch on in the market.

Yamaha
Their scooters did quite poorly.
Between the expensive MT15 and the R15, Yamaha seems to be doing a steady 9-10K units a month.
