Hero Electric wants petrol 2-wheeler sales to end by 2027

Hero Electric has proposed a timeline to end sales of petrol-powered 2-wheelers in India. The company believes that 2027 would be a good time for new sales to be 100% electric.

Naveen Munjal, Managing Director, Hero Electric, stated that if we target 2027, it would help speed up the switch to EVs. He believes that if we leave it to market forces, then the transition would take much longer.

China is the biggest market for electric 2-wheelers and is said to account for 97% of the world's e-scooter fleet. In comparison, e-scooter sales account for just 1% of the total sales in India.

Some of India's biggest 2-wheeler brands already have electric models in their product portfolio. However, more needs to be done if we are to speed up the transition. Munjal believes that once the goals are in place, companies will start planning backwards in terms of the supply chain, re-skilling, infrastructure requirements and financial implications.

Easier said than done. Considering the sizeable rural population that buys the lower segment of the 2 wheelers for their daily commute.

I most of the times feel these explosive statements are more like a click bait statements. Done to use as a bargaining chip with the authorities.

In that case what Hero electric's Naveen Munjal should do is prove to the government that his company is able to localise 100% production much before then, rather than the import chinese kits and assemble operations he's currently running.

He can stop selling his petrol bikes. Go Maruti way of not having Diesel products. His bikes aren't the best of the lot anyway save for a couple. Has he got the conviction to act on his statement?

Just realised, he isn't responsible for Hero Motocorp. My bad.

He may have made the statement for effect, but its equally true that people don't act unless there is a deadline. I don't think setting a timeline is unrealistic. At the very least, 10 years from now no one staying in an urban area should be able to register a petrol two wheeler. Same goes for small commercial transport. Rickshaws, Piaggio Ape, Ace should be electric, in the urban areas.

I believe his statement is directed more towards the government that his company will be ready to serve mass market by 2027, onus is on the government now to ensure the proper infrastructure setup is in place to support all EV sales in two wheelers.

This ban mindset needs to stop IMO. Make a good product and it will sell for itself.

Hero asks the government to ban ICE 2-wheelers on one end and on the other hand has completely dropped the ball when it comes to being the first mover in the segment. They should instead focus on surviving the EV newcomers onslaught before trying to comment on ICE vehicles.

Keeping deadlines will help generate some push, but they have to be realistic.

Hero electric should first invest in more R&D to come up with better products instead of assembling Chinese kits before asking for a blanket ban.

More than anything, this is a shot at brother Pawan Munjal and Hero MotoCorp. Both groups are locked in a bitter dispute over ebikes and the Hero name. As per their family agreement, electric two wheeler business under the Hero name would be the solely done by Naveen. But now, Hero Motocorp is also going electric, and the matter is in court.

Re: Hero Electric wants petrol 2-wheeler sales to end by 2027

How about we set a deadline for the government to convert all coal powered plants to renewable energy? Why should the mango man always bear the brunt of forceful change?

China may have 97% ev adoption but as of 2020 they also produce 895gw through renewable sources while india has a paltry 135gw. China has also invested billions on new ultra high voltage transmission lines to minimise transmission losses.. I doubt if our govt has even given this a thought, let alone implementing.

I think all these big corporations should hold on to their horses and plan for a steady phase out along with a step by step development of renewable infra. If they ban it suddenly on one fine day there's a good chance our country will come to a grinding halt.

True, no one banned horses from our roads, even now it's legal in almost all parts of our country (did actually check it).

Did anyone squeeze our throats to drive instead of horse riding? Absolutely not, we just choose cars as it is more convenient for us.

Just read this line its hilarious
My first reaction was he should've asked Hero Motors first.

Intended Pun : A proper sequel to this should be : Hero Electric has proposed a timeline and Hero Motors has rejected it. It all stayed in family and the net result was zero just that Hero Electric and Motors gained some publicity.

Yes this is the exact reason, it’s a direct take on the ongoing family dispute.

Government of India's priorities seem to have shifted towards transition to ethanol based vehicles rather than electric vehicles for now (Given the current political environment regarding farmer remuneration). Looks like we will continue with ICE vehicles for a bit longer than expected. Hopefully the taxes on ethanol will be brought down to make it price competitive.
