December 2021: Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only bikes that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

350cc and above it's all Royal Enfield. The Honda Highness barely compares in sales to the new Classic or the Meteor. Wonder if Yezdi will be able to capture some of this market. I kind of doubt it but wouldn't hurt to actually have someone giving RE genuine competition.

When you look at the superbike sales numbers from Honda, Triumph, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Harley it kind of paints a sorry picture. Yamaha has already curtailed its superbike offerings, they even discontinued the R3. It will be sad to see others follow suit as it looks impossible to keep running with these lowly numbers.

Re: December 2021: Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

In semi premium-ish (1.5 Lakh+) space there are only 2 main players, Royal Enfield 350cc platform including Classic, Meteor and Bullet on the other side it is Yamaha's premium 150cc platform which includes the R15 and MT15, which although has consistently performed more than 10000 units combined atleast is a distant second.
There is nothing else apart from these, it is a shame but that's how the market is and that's why we don't get latest and greatest models from Yamaha and others, they don't make business sense.
Some other semi successful models in this price range are with once again a huge gap from R15 -Himalayan and Honda CB350, but by bike's standards their numbers are not strong or that consistent.
I can't imagine how Triumph, Kawasaki and the likes are able to survive and run their showrooms, they are doing a charity on Indian enthusiasts by giving their proper support and decent prices, compared to their international offerings with such dismal numbers.

Aerox was launched in September but doesn't figure anywhere. No numbers at all

Xtreme 160 having 0 sales consistently from past many months? Is it discontinued? Looks better than 200S which is still selling. Was a good bike nevertheless. What am I missing here?

Why Yamaha is treating the Aerox this way - no clue! Have mentioned this in the two wheeler of the year thread, but the situation hasn't changed - so repeating myself.

There still isn't a display vehicle in the entire state of Kerala, even after all these months! Only one showroom in Kochi has seen one and sold a few bikes. Other showrooms have been taking bookings since November and are now taking fire from customers on the delayed delivery with no proper timelines in sight. From what I know - the dealership owners are planning to put in a strong word of protest during the annual dealer-company meet in Goa, end of this month.

For some reason, Yamaha hasn't been reporting even these rare Aerox dispatches too!

My Observations,
  • Pulsar 250 numbers are also not there? They have a big burden on their shoulders if they want to replace the OG Pulsars!
  • Look how RE Classic 350 (Re-born) managed same numbers as UCE CL350
  • TVS Raider is a very good 125cc bike which is not reflected in the sales chart!

Raider sold 10843 units and is the 20th top selling bike. Its there in the very first chart.

Point being that these vehicles are not available in any store too. I went to a dealer in my city and there was no display or test ride vehicle and he had no idea when things will change on that front.

There was some other 125 cc scooter but i did not want to get my attention diverted.

If the sales is itself so bad, how bad would the service be Yamaha?
