Hi there,

I initially had the RE base plate but later learnt that this will only accommodate the genuine RE accessory top box which is priced at 23k. Disposed it off and picked up the Givi box as you rightly identified. Cost me around 8.5k including the top box, base plate, mounting brackets, bolts, nuts, labour, etc.

Installing the Givi base plate on the 450 frame (you have to remove the OEM plastic plate which comes factory fitted on the bike) was super tedious. Took the shop guy more than an hour as he had to find and tightly bolt in the metal brackets to secure the base plate properly. Once done, it is very convenient, but the weight of the items you carry in the box is recommended to be limited to 7 kgs. Also, I could instantly feel the dynamics change when I rode the bike after installing the top box but gotten used to it now. My wife prefers the top box when we ride out as it serves as a comfortable backrest.

I will share a few pics of the base plate installation asap.

Apologies for the delay in posting the pic of the mounting plate.

I have used the Zana base plate and some mounting brackets and bolts to secure the base plate to the mounting rack on the bike. The installation looks a wee bit crude but the top box stays securely in place.

On another note, I got the black rally handguards installed. Cost me INR 4,450/- for the part. No labour was charged to me. Here is a pic:

I feel the finish could have been a lot better, esp. the aluminim frame of the unit but for the price, it surely is bang for the buck.

Re: Thimma, my new Himalayan 450 comes home. First Royal Enfield / ADV in my garage

On 3rd October, I had placed an order for the tubeless spoked wheels and the invoice mentioned a delivery date of 13th Oct.

I did not have any hopes of getting the wheels so soon and eventually forgot about it. Last week, I received an email from RE which mentioned that there were delays and the order would be fulfilled within mid-Dec. I think many owners who placed the order for tubeless wheels got this email.

However, this Monday, I got a call from the dealership which I had selected for the installation of the tubeless wheels. My order had reached them and they asked me to drop my bike off the next morning for the installation.

The tubeless kit includes both front and rear wheel with the spokes, brake disc rotor and the ABS ring. The OEM spoked wheels, tubes and the rear wheel adaptor was neatly packed into the same boxes which contained the tubeless wheels.

Do note that you will need to hire an auto/dunzo or get the old wheels in the boxes in a car back home. This is because the boxes are considerably big and heavy. If you are planning to haul this on the bike or a friend's scooter, I would not advise it as it can be unsafe.

Anyway, I took a short spin before I paid for the installation (INR 1394/-) and found the bike rolling a lot freely than earlier. Maybe placebo effect? I will take the bike out for a longer spin over the weekend and see.

Don't they have any buyback or exchange for the old rims? Why would you need to haul them back?

Nope, for existing owners, the tubeless spoked wheels are sold as an accessory.

If one is purchasing the bike, they can opt for tubeless wheels on the vehicle configurator page of the RE website. I presume this comes with an added cost.

Re: Thimma, my new Himalayan 450 comes home. First Royal Enfield / ADV in my garage

Close to a month late to post this but nevertheless...

Did an overnighter with a buddy of mine to Sakleshpur. It was the Labour Day holiday and a long weekend but could manage to make time for just one night's stay.

The ride was superb although the traffic was pretty dense on the highway due to the long weekend. Thimma performed beautifully as usual. I had recently installed the touring seats and this was the first long ride after it was installed.

The ride was super comfy, miles ahead of the stock seat and no more chaffed butt cheeks

However, I would suggest others to sample the options available (rally seat is another option in addition to the touring seat) as a friend of mine reported that he tried the rally seat and the touring seats and is still finding the ride uncomfortable.

We booked our stay at Tusk & Dawn, Sakleshpur and it was excellent. The approach road was just perfect for Thimma and other such high ground clearance vehicles. The staff was wonderful, very efficient and courteous. The rooms were clean, decent and cozy. The views and natural ambience were nothing short of wonderful.

Here are some pics from our stay. Highly recommend this place if you are looking for a quiet place to wind down. No mobile network, only sounds of nature to wake up to.

Wanted to stop and take more pics as the scenery was so breathtaking but stopping every now and then can be a tad irritating.
