March 2024: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only bikes that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

I am feeling happy for Yamaha. They dumped an old product at an atrocious price in our market. I am very happy for the result of the product. Yamaha better not think of launching a big bike again if atrocious pricing is what they are after.

In the Honda section, what's the difference between CB350 and H'ness CB350?

Why is Ola missing in this?

X440 sales seem at par with Street 400 even after delivery delays and average reviews.

Honda should be worried about Activa sales now. Need to bring in EV version.

For those thinking Honda CB350 sales would tank, even Lord Shumi said as much during their triumph video, it had held up surprisingly well. At this time, the impediment is their distribution network. Bigwing showroom are like as the Ajit quote goes, Honda won’t let them live because they launch nothing, they won’t let them die because they are forced to sell some bikes through these showrooms only.

I feel if they opened up to regular Honda dealers in cities where there us no Bigwing showroom, sales could easily be 2-3x. Does Honda care though?

KTM sales lists only Duke models, what about RC and Adv models. Looks missing.

Something amiss on Aprilia RS V4 numbers, it can't be 120 in single month of March 2024. Our market isn't mature enough to have that many superbikes dispatched in a month. Autopunditz have listed previous month figure of 5 correctly for RSV4 though.

If one looks at source values for Aprilia, it lists 120 number for RS and I strongly feel it's for Aprilia RS457, making it a total dispatch of dealer display/test bikes, media bikes and some end-customer bikes.

Number are combined figures for that engine e.g. Duke 390 means 3 models; ADV 390, RC 390 and Duke 390.

Ather Apex is doing decent numbers for a more niche scooter. Still haven't seen one though.

Re: March 2024: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

The slump in super meteor sale is a big one. What happened in previous month that dispatches were all time high and in next month even lower than previous months?

Also, himalayan is barely touching 2k sales per month. But the hype for it was so high. What could be the reason for this? Is it because of export orientation of Himalayan units or the demand is only this much for it at present?

Re: March 2024: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

The Kawasaki Z900 is starting to move some serious numbers. Glad to see this as an owner myself. The ZX-10R is down from its launch hype but continues to be a good option in its class but it is unlikely to sell in too high numbers. Literally every other motorcycle is doing dismally unfortunately. The Ninja 300 "Make in India" move is such an utter disappointment with the bike being such a poor proposition for the money with 2 gen old tech.

It is becoming VERY hard for manufacturers to make 2 cylinder motors in the sub 450cc segment. The benefits do not outweigh the cost of manufacture or the cost of maintenance. I feel that the ZX-4R which is bought now and preserved well will become one of the most prized bikes in maybe 20-30 years. It tempts me to buy one but not having a track here in Bengaluru is such a downer.

I heard from the sales team that the Versys 1000 and maybe the Versys 600 will be refreshed this year end. As a guy looking to buy an Adv I hope they are a good value proposition as none of the other options look good to me.

Re: March 2024: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

Odd to find Ola amiss here. Ather moving over 10000 units a month is admirable for the manufacturer. Regarding big bikes, ZX 6R sales are heating up. RSV4 from Aprilia, selling 120 units is hard to believe. If it ends up being true, this is reason to celebrate. RS457 launch should see Aprilia sell more in our market in the future. Triumph sold a surprising number of Rocket IIIs this month.

Activa sales on a downward trend over the past year or so is a sign of the market moving upwards. Good times ahead.
