KTM 390 Adventure R spotted ahead of EICMA 2024

KTM is all set to reveal the 390 Adventure R at EICMA 2024. Ahead of its official debut, the company showcased a camouflaged prototype at one of its Adventure Rally events in South Dakota.

The 390 Adventure R is a more rugged version of the standard 390 Adventure and looks ready to take on a rally stage. It is equipped with long travel suspension with a high ground clearance. It has KTM’s signature stacked headlamp unit with an integrated windscreen, a single-piece flat seat and an engine bash plate.

The 390 Adventure R is equipped with 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wire-spoke wheels, wrapped in off-road tyres. The rugged suspension setup includes a WP USD front fork and an offset mono-shock at the rear. Braking is handled by disc brakes.

The 390 Adventure R is expected to be powered by the new 399cc engine that produces 45.3 BHP and 39 Nm. The engine will be paired with a 6-speed gearbox via a bi-directional quick-shifter.

Re: KTM 390 Adventure R spotted ahead of EICMA 2024

Looking forward to this one. The bike looks aesthetically pleasing and purposeful, even when camouflaged ( I was not entirely convinced about the insect like look of the current gen 390 adv).
Many on social media have expressed concern over the choice of underbelly exhast, especailly during water crossings with isses like vaccum lock in case of an engine stall. But I am hoping KTM would already have thought through these issues and considered them in their design approach.

A few of my personal expecation/wishlist:

* Moderate seat height of around 830-840mm
* Generous suspension travel (180mm or more on both the end) and prefebly with adjustability for rebound.
* Better low end rideability than current gen 390 (Triumph 400 is good for reference)
* Decent tank capacity, a minimum of 15L or more.
* Good standing and riding ergonomics, which current gen 390 lacks a bit with inclined foot pegs, etc.
* Ground clearence of a minimum 0f 200mm
* An optional center stand
* Good headlight (most LEDS these days look bright but are useless in real life, including the likes of Himalayan 450, triumph 400 series, etc)
* Good Horn, suited for Indian condition, like what stock Interceptor comes with.
* Good wind protection for long haul on highway to reach off road lcoations.
* Tyres appear tubed. But an optional and affordable tubeless spoke set like what RE is done with Himalayan to be agreat even as an accessory.
* And all this with a wet weight of under 175kg.

BTW, looks like the bike is well (ab)used where the front rim is already dented.

This looks perfect for me as someone who currently owns a Gen-3 Duke and is thinking about switching to an adventure bike for more comfort on longer tours and rougher roads. I love the engine on my Duke, so this would be my choice. A lot of people talk about tubeless spokes, but to me, they don’t make much sense for a hardcore off-road bike like the 390 Adventure R in the pics which looks more offroad biased. One hard hit on the rim, and you could start losing air with no easy fix. Personally, I prefer regular rims on a bike that’s focused on off-road performance. Fixing punctures are comparitively easier than fixing a bent rim.

In a country like ours which is just warming up to the concept of serious off-roading, 95% of people who would buy this will not use it hard enough to dent the rim. But 95% will surely encounter a puncture which is pain to fix on a tube tyre. The 'bike' may look off road biased but the 'bikers' are still to catch up.

You have very well defined the use-case scenarios for such bikes which is 'comfort over longer tours and rougher roads'. With such usage, bending a rim is extremely rare compared to the possibility of picking up a nail.

And thats the reason most of the Himalayan 450 owners have placed order for their tubeless spoke wheel set and there is a good amount of waititing time due to excess demand.

Could this video be the reason for the dent on the rim.

Re: KTM 390 Adventure R spotted ahead of EICMA 2024

KTM pricing is no longer that friendly. The first KTM 390 was launched at 1.8 Ex showroom. Looking at the progression I would not be surprised if this breaches 4.25L and gets closer to 4.5 considering the other twins producing similar power are upward of 5L.

What may not go in favor of KTM is the price and single-cylinder
What may go in favor of KTM is the overall cost of ownership, parts, and ease of finding a service center all over India.

Time will tell.

They should give a base version at low cost and allow users to add features. I will skip the quick shifter, TFT, and other nonfunctional parts, but will choose their adjustable suspension and keep the cost as low as possible.

Those who have pushed this bike in the ghats will also vouch for its excellent stability and cornering ABS and TC making it extremely fun to flip in places like Kolli.

I completely agree that's why I would prefer a model with either alloys or tubeless spokes but that version won't be Advernture R like in the images where I guess R means Rally. A normal Adventure version will suffice for 95% of use cases. I hope they lauch it in different versions rather than just one.

The current ADV SW version is 4.2L OTR. So the next gen ADV is likely to cross 4.5L

That super low almost underside exhaust is absolutely inexplicable on a bike of this nature. What are they thinking on that. Other than that weird anomaly, can’t wait to see and ride this one.

Agree with some that they hopefully give a tubeless spoked option too.

The switch next to the hazard light button looks like cruise control.

The one on the bottom is interesting, is it the paddle shifter of the AMT?
Maybe an image of the 1390 ADV because that was showcased alongside the 390 ADV R.

Edit:- On second thoughts, it could be the button for adjusting cruising speed.

Hey, that's me! I just got back from doing the Zanskar circuit on my Gen-3 Duke. I loved every bit of the ride but comfort is where it lacked. With the riding position and the seat, it wasn't exactly a piece of cake. And I'm also thinking about doing two up touring this time, so I hope KTM has something in store for me. If they do, I'm definitely selling my Duke and buying an Adventure. Although, my heart wants the Enduro

speed.
No, the image is a snapshot from one of the pictures shared above from the 390 ADV R. So it is indeed coming.

Bottom shifter is likely to modulate cruise control speed.

Is it just me or do the foot pegs look a bit rear set?
