Re: 2025 KTM 390 Adventure Review

I have one doubt. Some people are telling ADV X's suspension feels softer than S's suspension no matter how much we adjust S's.

If this is true, after buying ADV S, can we buy the rear-only suspension of X and replace with S's rear suspension unit?

I am assuming the comfort feel usually happens due to action of rear suspension compared to front suspension whereas front end usually be felt on hands.

So replacing rear would give that smooth feel in city ride and when out on off-road events, we can use the adjustable one. Considering the price of rear suspension to be around 8K.

Feel free to comment your thoughts.

Did they also mention their settings, and did other fellow users find it not obnoxious?

Asking because, when both ends on the suspension are adjustable, the user will almost always have to adjust both, to achieve the comfort they're looking for. I'm assuming here that the default settings from the factory is such an 'in-sync' adjusted middle ground. It is almost never the case that a user will only need to adjust one end, that puts them where they want. More often than not, such adjustment will only lead to an overall poor setting. The adjustments have to be made 'in sync', basically.

For instance, if a rider felt that the ride from the default setting was a bit stiffer to their liking, and only softened the rear, the ride will immediately feel softer as the rear would absorb road imperfections better. But it may be worse in the long run, with the relatively stiffer front end, causing the rear to be 'unsettling' or 'see-saw-ing'. This also causes discomfort, as the rider would probably be making up for this effect by adjusting their body position, likely without even realising, causing fatigue.

This also means that, if/when you're going with a non-adjustable rear suspension, you're also basically limiting the adjustable front suspensions to perhaps a few ideal settings, which may or may not work for you.

Barring rear preload, I've never used adjustable suspensions. But the theory alone is daunting enough that I don't think I'd be able to find the best-for-me setting as soon. So I find it hard to take such claims at face value. However, for what it's worth, I can see how it could be the case: The adjustments on the S being not granular enough to hit the perfect sweet spot that the non-adjustable ones happened to hit. But I highly doubt that this is the case.

If comfort is top priority, it is rather better to try out different bikes in the segment and pick one. Most riders also seem to think the Himalayan 450's suspensions offer better comfort despite being non-adjustable. So, if I find the H450 to be better at comfort, the ADV S should have to be compelling in my other less significant priorities, for me to consider it. This is how I'd go about it. I think choosing the bike first, and then trying to make it work makes very little sense, especially in the current market where we have so many options in this segment.

There are two use cases - one in city and one in highway. I test rode all 3. Him, ADV X and ADV S. What I found is Him450 is good in city but I really felt the engine strain after 100Kmph. I'm a fast rider, so usually I go good speeds. So naturally I was inclined towards ADV 390. But in the city, I felt ADV to be stiffer in normal setting (in S) and hence I test rode ADV X also. ADV X felt much better in the rear - I never felt my body is moving too much. I mean I can't express in words.

So what I did is I asked the dealer to set the rear suspension to full soft. He did. And I can really see the motorcycle being soft. But the catch here is I really felt X felt much better in terms of plushness. And I heard from others as well. May be I think I need to check preload on S as well but I didn't.

And I won't go with X because mine is 50% city and 50% highway use and I want all the features.

Hence my question can I replace rear shock of S with X's. And would it fit properly? And would I get same feeling? I'm not sure dealer knows regarding this.

Just to set context, I bought the ADV x after using a BS3 RC390 with Zedling suspension on both ends custom made for my weight, usage and purposes. I tuned it to suit my needs on track and for touring without pillion. It was so balanced and useful that without even any kind of adjustability at the front and only threaded preload adjustment i was able to use the suspension and improve the bike's handling and dynamics to level that i hesitated to buy a bike which has no options of custom made suspension available from zedling. (other options like shark factory and yss suspension being used on friends' RC made me realize Zedling is the best bang for buck in terms of customization and service over the life of the unit). I enquired the Zedling team if they are considering a suspension for the ADV and then made my purchase. But to my surprise the ADV x has a good base set up to start with. It was so comfortable that it addressed most of my needs on highway and city use (preload at rear was at 3) it was so comfortable without bouncing around much. I put the preload to 6 on the rear now (made it stiff at the rear) since i am frequently travelling in the city with my wife and daughter. The suspension is not working well but a small difference in the way how the front reacts is changed now. I am still trying to set the preload to say 4 or 5 and bring back a little more plushness to the rear. But I am happy the way the base set up is on the adv X and my initial intention to save up the extra money from buy the X over the S to be used on the suspension is still in the cards for me to explore. But at just 8k for the adjustable rear suspension from S , it still makes me think if it is worth trying it, and play with the rebound and see if it suit my needs without touching the front. But for now I am enjoying the base set up quite well.

Yes the question is can I replace S's rear with X's unit. I don't think of any reason why it cannot considering all other fitting units around rear being all same in X and S. Although I am not sure if we get the same feeling of X even after replacing rear. May be I think I'll buy S and then try it out myself after fiddling completely with adjustability for a few months.

I believe you have Adv X. The software might be different for X and S due to the differences in features of models. Because I checked with my friend who has a 1st lot Adv S, he has the same version as mine, which is 1v08.

Few Adv S owners have reported getting the ECU updated on 1st service, but I haven't been able to find the version yet.

Any Adv S owners here, please share your software version post 1st service. So if an update is indeed available, I will push the SVC to update the same. Because when asked, they said that your bike is from 2nd lot onwards and has the update preinstalled. Same for the crash guard bolts.

In my understanding the basic dimensions i.e., eye to eye and travel of the shock is basically the same between the X and S. Only the internal circuits for adjusting the rebound is addition to the S over the X. I think you can easily swap it out without increasing the ride height if you are happy with the spring rate. If not then you will need a completely new suspension built around your needs. While i found the 390 duke 3rd gen has similar unit but it is not the same as the ADV. Front fork replacement is very expensive though. I might get the custom internals fixed from Zedling. But for the shock I will explore ADV S's shock and decide if i need a custom shock later.

In parallel to these upgrades i am planning to swap the organic brake pads on the X with sintered ones and evaluate the front dive and then decide on the plans for the front fork . Cheers.

...
Yes I own the X variant. I will then leave it to the owners of S variant to comment . thanks for the info though.
