Did they also mention their settings, and did other fellow users find it not obnoxious?
Asking because, when both ends on the suspension are adjustable, the user will almost always have to adjust both, to achieve the comfort they're looking for. I'm assuming here that the default settings from the factory is such an 'in-sync' adjusted middle ground. It is almost never the case that a user will only need to adjust one end, that puts them where they want. More often than not, such adjustment will only lead to an overall poor setting. The adjustments have to be made 'in sync', basically.
For instance, if a rider felt that the ride from the default setting was a bit stiffer to their liking, and only softened the rear, the ride will immediately feel softer as the rear would absorb road imperfections better. But it may be worse in the long run, with the relatively stiffer front end, causing the rear to be 'unsettling' or 'see-saw-ing'. This also causes discomfort, as the rider would probably be making up for this effect by adjusting their body position, likely without even realising, causing fatigue.
This also means that, if/when you're going with a non-adjustable rear suspension, you're also basically limiting the adjustable front suspensions to perhaps a few ideal settings, which may or may not work for you.
Barring rear preload, I've never used adjustable suspensions. But the theory alone is daunting enough that I don't think I'd be able to find the best-for-me setting as soon. So I find it hard to take such claims at face value. However, for what it's worth, I can see how it could be the case: The adjustments on the S being not granular enough to hit the perfect sweet spot that the non-adjustable ones happened to hit. But I highly doubt that this is the case.
If comfort is top priority, it is rather better to try out different bikes in the segment and pick one. Most riders also seem to think the Himalayan 450's suspensions offer better comfort despite being non-adjustable. So, if I find the H450 to be better at comfort, the ADV S should have to be compelling in my other less significant priorities, for me to consider it. This is how I'd go about it. I think choosing the bike first, and then trying to make it work makes very little sense, especially in the current market where we have so many options in this segment.
