Repairs, Service & Maintenance - Devabhai (Chembur, Mumbai)

Work handled:
  • Servicing and repair of cars, suspensions, brakes etc.
  • He is my FNG (Friendly Neighborhood Garage) and mechanic.
  • Apart from most major brands he also has the knowledge to work on older generation vehicles for car buffs.
What I like:
  • Good, clean work
  • Inherently talented and uses his brains to diagnose noises and problems
  • Can handle most cars: For me, he does Palio, Jeep, Innova and for friends he does City, Optra, Accent and an occasional Jonga. Have seen Indica's, Taveras, Sumos etc.
  • Friendly attitude and honest. Does not rip off newbies.
  • Is well equipped with basic tools
  • Lathe, washing ramp, spare part shops are all in the immediate vicinity
  • Has a staff of 3 to 4 people.
What I don't like:
  • Has a very small shed he works from. Covered space is limited. (has open space for overnight parking if needed)
  • Manages work on 3 to 4 cars at a time in the space he has. Can get crowded.
  • Does not have a scanner (usually does not need it). I wouldnt go to him with a Merc or a BMW)
Pricing:
  • Usual FNG pricing.
Speciality / USP:
  • Confident about most cars and able to fix most issues.
Contact Information

- Name of the contact person: Devabhai
- Phone numbers: 9867959535(Can give reference of Banerjee with the jeep )
- Postal Address: Weighing Scale Complex(Kaanta)/Hotel Hot Spot - Near the Shivaji Statue/Deonar Circle on Sion Trombay road.
After Deonar Circle/Shivaji Putla, there is a cluster of small garages on the left coming from Vashi/Deonar. His is the first shed.(If coming from Sion/Chembur take the circle to make a U turn back towards chembur, if coming from Eastern Freeway, take the left towards Sion and it is literally at that signal)

Re: Repairs, Service & Maintenance - Devabhai (Chembur, Mumbai)

Skill Level / Competencies: 9/10
He'll fix almost anything and everything or find a temporary solution if the job is too big and you're in a hurry! He's done a great jobs like a complete overhaul on my 40+ year old Jonga to my 2011 Honda city and everything in between - you won't be disappointed and He's happy to talk you through the issues if you're interested.

Location: Strategically placed for lack of a better option! 8/10
At the Shivaji putla round-about (just before the entry to the new Eastern Freeway and/or before RK Studios - the junction is perfect for all those who are coming in from Vashi towards Bombay - Perfect location for those who may have issues on the Bombay - Pune expressway and need immediate attention. We've all had atleast one instance where we've looked for a mechanic just after the Vashi toll naka.

Pricing: Really cheap!! 10/10

The guy has not been influenced by modern day economics (yet) and you'd almost feel like giving him a little more than what he asks just out of your own will. You'd be kidding yourself if you try and haggle with him on his prices - its seriously that low! Especially when you see the quality and the effort he puts in. He's ok with you taking your parts and consumables if you want and only charge you for labour!

Personality / temperament: 10/10
A really down to earth guy and easy to talk to. Really humble! this team of young boys does exactly what he asks them to do and they're a happy bunch themselves! happy to chat away while you're waiting to get the work done and working on your car at the same time! He's got one fake eye - but he does his work is better than most other mechanics with both their eye! Honest!

Downside: Just one.. 7 / 10
Limited parking space on the busy intersection. While he does a lot of overnight jobs, one might feel a little discomfort knowing that he does not have a covered / closed garage - some of us have left our vehicles with him for a week without any issues though!

He does not do denting/painting. There is a painter in the same compound who can do that. Bearded guy called 'Mulla Ji'. He is pretty good. Washing is done by the wash station in same compound and added to service bill. If you get it done from Devabhai say Banerjee referred you.

As you can see it is a loosely coupled alliance of specialists

Excellent experience with Devabhai.

Got my car service, added HU, upgraded headlamps got dents and scratches painted, cleaning and polishing on my i10. My car was out of warranty after 5 years and for the first time it went outside A$$
Great job, very low charges ( lesser than what one would call reasonable).
Left my car with him for over a week.
Devabhai is a very honest, modest, down to earth and knowledgeable person.

Thanks a lot. Highly recommended.

Been sending the Santro to Devabhai ever since I moved to Chembur. This guy knows his stuff, is humble, and the rates are very reasonable.

Highly recommended for all mechanical work.

Re: Repairs, Service & Maintenance - Devabhai (Chembur, Mumbai)

Great service continues.
Innova airbag light showed up again.
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techni...-resolved.html. In addition horn stopped working because it is wired through same spiral cable.
Dealership says my VIN is not in recall list (probably because they replaced it once). New one cost is 8500 odd + labor.

Took it to Deva. He sourced a used spiral cable from CST in great condition and fitted it for less than half the price.
And the difference from a 'regular' mechanic: Not content with airbag light going off, scanned the car to clear earlier errors and check for any abnormalities and that the airbag module was functioning.

Came home with a smile on my face!

I can second that!

I'm a newbie and still learning.
Took my 2000 Maruti 800 to him.
And the car had the best and reasonable service in ages.

Each time Ravi Auto Service would get me a bill of Rs 5000/- it used to leave me less than satisfied. Devabhai did the good professional work in much lesser cost! And not only that he patiently took time to explain me what all he had done!

thank you for the recommendation genesis!
Hence I'm ending the search for my FNG!

2000 800 probably means a carb unless i am wrong. No MASS knows how to tune a carb 800 and i am speaking from experience had in 2009. The newer guys are trained on fuel injection systems and have probably never seen a carburettor in their lives. For this you need the older mechanics someone like mentioned here .

Thanks for this reco. I took my car to him recently for a problem. He fixed it at quite a reasonable rate and the car seems fine now.

Hey, why don't you share more details about the problem and its resolution. Might help others

Re: Repairs, Service & Maintenance - Devabhai (Chembur, Mumbai)

Can anyone second devabhais expertise in overhauling the suspension of a swift. My swift has taken the usual beating and the ride has become horrible at 40k kms.

I don't mind keeping the car with him for a couple of days provides he rectifies the ride so as to make it more enjoyable.

I have read a few reviews about oberoi suspension in bandra and the bhpians are dejected by the looks of it so would not like to take a chance. Also should I stick to mass for a suspension overhaul.

Have tyre change in the offing provided I get the suspension thingy right. Please help.

P.S the ride has become uncontrollably horrible and deteriorating day by day over Mumbai's infamous paved roads at lower speeds. The various kat-Kat sounds have added to the misery of my co-passengers to a larger extent.

While i am myself contemplating going to devabhai in future if the need arises, for a Maruti i can recommend you Nakita motors (Joe), kindly look up in directory. He is a ex-Maruti employee and will be more than helpful in getting your Swift's suspension overhauled. He is highly recommended for any Maruti car and is a honest person and won't make you change unnecessary items.

Edit: Mass will Nuke your wallet with huge bills for sure.

Yes. Just saw the experience which you had shared with nakita. Feeling at ease now. I will surely take an appointment for my suspension work.

I will share my experience after I get the job done from nakita. Also, whether it is safe to leave the car with them overnight? Can you please highlight on the approximate damages albeit it will be much lesser than MASS.

Though i have never had to leave the car overnight and with some planning i was able to get my Civic's front suspension overhauled withing a day from him.
Not sure about the Swift's cost. I am PMing you his no.

Note to mods : The above discussion is not related to this thread and could be moved to Nakita motors thread instead !
