I was briefed extensively about the vehicle. I could understand the briefing as most of it tallied with my knowledge of my erstwhile XYLO (A beaut of a vehicle that one was. This was the first few XYLOs that came out, the E series, before Mahindra played around with the D series and finally ended up with nondescript Quanto ). We drove out and I gingerly eased her through the traffic of Tirupathi. And then the 130 kms journey to my hometown , Madanapalle, began. In no time she made me feel very comfortable with her, except when braking the left leg would lift to press a non-existent clutch pedal! She handled beautifully with oodles of power and adapted well to my playing around with the A pedal getting the feel of her. Once you tuned in to the faint engine noise, then depressing or releasing the A pedal, keeping an eye on the RPM guage, was quite easy. (Am an old jet fighter aviator and hence the synergy between engine noise, RPM and throttle movement.) She took the 10 minute minor ghat at Bakrapet with ease. On straight stretches I took her upto 100 keeping the RPM below 2300 ( that setting was maintained throughout the trip )and she responded like a gem. Very smooth over potholes and very stable in turns. It was a pleasure driving her in the 2 hour run to our home. The gears changed automatically and seamlessly and …. and well I just loved the way she performed – this is my first automatic and so you will have to pardon my going overboard!
Oh yes, the aircon is a killer. I drove with the control knob turned towards the tapering end of the green as more green would have frozen me to death!

By the way, I like my music and IMHO the system that is in this vehicle is good. In the EQ options I play music in the Retro mode and, wow, and playback has real depth in it.
For fence sitters, the T8 AMT is a beautiful vehicle. All those MT guys, go for the AMT – that 70,000 extra is worth it. You’ll love the extra features that it has. Real value for money. |
I was one of the early buyers. Captain Rex, AutoIndian, Titanium are contemporaries. That was Nov 2015. The beauty is still going great guns. Clocked over 37,000 K and not a single issue, touch wood. I've gone to the Tirupathi garage only for the routine 10K servicing. Apart from that not a single viist - oh, only once. A rat chewed and cut the reverse warning wire. Got it taped up. The auto mode makes driving such a pleasure.

Amidst lots of AMT TUV horror stories , you are very fortunate to have a trouble free experience with TUV AMT, that too from early batches. Congratulations and wish it keeps munching miles longer.In my last service visit, I saw a AMT TUV 300 gathering dust in workshop. I was told that there were multiple failures of AMT mechanism and customer was frustrated to no end. He left the vehicle warning that he would see them in consumer court. Some terrible experience for both parties.
I'd given my TUV for a water wash yesterday morning and in the evening, while driving into my apartment's parking lot at ~15 kmph, I heard periodic sounds of explosions from my car. The sound emitted periodically was identical, incredibly clear and loud. The radio was chirping away all along, as I turned the car onto my parking slot. I pondered over it briefly and simply parked the car and went upstairs to have dinner; I didn't want to deal with this at 10 PM in the night.
I had some negative thoughts while going to sleep...maybe the suspension had blown up? Was it the drivetrain? "Damn Mahindra and my choice...zzz"
This morning I realized what had actually happened; the carwash guys had pushed the radio antenna to an upright position and the antenna had been brushing against the periodically-spaced support beams in our parking lot's ceiling. Everytime the antenna had brushed against a support beam above, it had emitted such a noise. :)
So it's just the coolant issue bugging me now, going to get it fixed at my first service this coming Saturday.

Same thing happened to me. After servicing, they kept the antenna at upright position and it used to touch drainage pipes at a particular spot in my apartment parking area. I realized the issue after couple of times of hearing the odd sound.
Got my first service done at 2600 Km yesterday from Zulaikha Mahindra Service Center, Kilkattalai, Chennai.
1) Engine oil, oil filter changed - Rs.2300
2) Wheel alignment issue corrected
3) Handbrake actually works now!
4) Tires inflated
5) Coolant topped up - No leaks were seen
6) Engine harness replaced - Rat attack! Cost - Rs.700
Overall service costs ~Rs.3000. I was offered an underbody coating for Rs.4300 by the service center but declined it for now.
It was I who pointed out the rat footprints to the service advisor when he had opened the engine bay. Having to worry about the rat menace is quite unpleasant. This rodent menace is a recent development since I've never seen their footprints in the dusty engine bay even till a week ago.

In my previous car to fend off rats, I tied up old socks with 4-5 naphthalene balls in each , at various places in engine bay. After that rats never returned.
Alternatively , these days some of my friends used mouse gum pads to catch rats that enter engine bay. But with that method, the pads have to be removed and replaced every time car is taken out, untill a rat steps and gets stuck. Else, that pad getting stuck to some engine internals is not a pleasant thing to deal with.
Hope your fight with rodents ends in victory soon.

I happened to be at a 3M Car Care (OMR -Chennai) couple of weeks back for an underbody inspection when I chanced to see this ad for a 3M anti-rat spray/coating. On further enquiry with the person there, it looks like it is selling like hot-cakes! costs ~INR 1100 and lasts for about an year. Do check out.

Thanks deetee. I've gotten wind of a 3M solution for this though and I think i'll go with it...

Yes sir! That's indeed where i'm looking now :thumbs up Good to know that it's been received well by 3M CarCare customers. Here on TBhp, we don't seem to have any information on how well their solution works. Yours is the first indication I've received that it works well, going by the demand for it.
If I were you guys, I would go with the 3M but would also attach these to the fuel pipes and areas that a rat can perch on. These cost 20rs each (earlier lot was rs10 but seller didn't have any more stock) and are fairly easy to attach using plastic ties. I have felt this to be a good deterrent.

Update
My service advisor called me up yesterday evening as a follow-up. He let me know that he had sprayed the engine bay with a rat repellent liquid after cleaning the area, free of charge. So I opened the hood and sure enough, there is this odorless liquid sprayed all under the hood. I think this will hold for a couple of months and then, it's the 3M rat-repellent coating ahoy!
The dreaded AMT failure struck me this morning. My wife started the car at 5am to drop my son to football but the car refused to move. I wasnt aware and tried at 3PM in heavy rain and got the warning light. The AMT was falling back to Neutral and refused to stay in A1 or R. I called the help line and they scheduled the tow for tomorrow morning at 10AM. I called my service center and those guys are amazing. The QC spoke to his boss and came over to my house to check the issue. He brought his diagnostic laptop and we determined that there was a hydraulic failure of the AMT. They checked underneath and found that the transmission oil is low. They believe the actuator will need to be changed. I will know more tomorrow once it has gotten to the service center. I would be breaking into a fit right now, if not for the brilliant support I am getting from the service center. It also helps that the TUV is not my daily commute (yet) and I have fall back of 2 additional cars. I would be terribly upset if this were not the case, I imagine. It is unsettling and I still fear taking this car on any long drives. The furthest I have been is Pondicherry, about 180Km from Chennai. The jury is still out on the reliability of this vehicle for me atleast.

The AMT horrors continue. So sorry to hear that this happened to you Tank. I faced a similar issue with my AMT 6 months back. I was on my way to work which is approx 30 KMs from my home and after driving for 25 KMs the engine died on me. In panic I tried couple of times to crank it but no result. After couple of minutes I tried again and it worked. After few KMs it died again. Called the towing services and handed over to MASS, after a day got a call from MASS and they said they found no issue :Frustrati.
They did some diagnostics and said I was using brake and accelerator at the same time for 20% of my drive. Which made no sense to me. It still is a mystery to me of what actually happened.
Finally, did my dream drive to Leh in the TUV.
TUV performed like a true tank and took all challanges without a niggle.
Overall once in the mountainous terrain what I observed that people in that area rely on Mahindra & Toyota a lot. Every second car I saw is either a Mahindra or a Toyota.
My total journey was for 2 weeks.
Following is the route-
Gurgaon - jammu - srinagar - kargil - Leh - Pangong tso - Jispa - Kullu - Amritsar - Gurgaon.
There were some really bad roads or say no roads at all at some stretches and TUV handled everything at an ease. Not even a single puncture occurred on the drive, was driving on my stock Ceat tyres.
Any idea how to self diagnose this warning light? This has been on since last two days and according to manual this means water in fuel :Shockked:? No idea how water entered in to my fuel. Any assistance or insights would be appreciated.

You can as well try to refill at another known place and dilute the current fuel and it may happen that the error will go after few cranks.
If the issue looks serious that you can feel issues pertaining to performance of the engine, you will have to visit the ASC and get the fuel drained from the tank and replace your fuel filter.
