Went in to check the progress, and whilst most of my other concerns were sorted, the software was not. |
There's something about the HU software/firmware that makes Tata ASC reluctant to touch it! During my car's ('18 XZA) initial services, I asked them to check for any update, but they never did. They SA said they will not touch (= they've been told by Tata) it unless there was an issue with the HU.
My HU has never been updated either, it runs the same firmware that the car came with, off the assembly line.

Oh great! Thanks a ton! How much did your tyres costs? And has the noise level been reduced since you have changed them Yokohama? |
I don't recollect exactly, but If I am not wrong it was around 5200₹ per tire. It was definitely below 5500₹. And yes Yokohama's are really silent and pretty smooth. You can't go wrong with them.

Agreed. I have no problem with the functioning of the HU Itself. The major issue is with Android Auto. Whilst running navigation on AA, if I keep the maps screen open, it tends to lag by quite a margin. However, if I keep Spotify or any other app open in with the navigation on voice commands, it works fine.
I can't understand if that is an issue with HU software or Android Auto in itself.

Apart from Yokohama, you could try MRF ZLX for balanced performance. I have replaced mine with Ceat Milaze tyres (Stock Size). It has decent wet and dry grip along with great tyre life, but the tyre noise is creeping into the cabin on uneven surfaces.

I have a Tiago (2020) XZ+ which has clocked about 35k. It is time to change the company stock of Goodyear tyres. I am planning to stock the company-recommended tyre size. I am looking for a tyre brand that needs to last atleast 50k on good and bad roads, with excellent wet grip and mileage. Budget around 5-6k per tyre. |
Check with Continental as well. My tiago still runs on stock MRF after clocking 30K. Continental are supposed to be second best after michelins. I replaced them on my Ertiga after clocking 50K on stock JK. Continental are really good so far on Ertiga after 62K and they will be on tiago too.
Got the six year servicing done on my Tiago, and followed the schedule, despite low yearly running. The following jobs were done:
1) Engine oil + Filter
2) A/c filter
3) Spark plugs
4) Brake oil
5) Rear brake liner + cylinder: there was no issue as such, but every monsoon, the rear left brake had a tendency to get stuck causing a major challenge. Decided to get them changed, much to the surprise and initial reluctance (in good faith) of the SA
6) Wheel alignment + balancing
Total cost: 9.2k
I wanted to get the AMT oil changed, but the SA (rightly) said that it is sealed for life, and doesn't require any maintenance. On my insistence, he said, they've never done it, and he doesn't know if they even stock the oil, and that they'd have to look the procedure up. During car pick up when I reminded him, he seemed slightly more eager and confirmed that the oil was in stock, and that we could get it done at next service.
He also mentioned that the A and C mounts (of A, B, C) have issues: A has a tiny crack, and C has worn off bushing. I was quite surprised by this, and looked it up on this thread, only to find it to be a common issue. The SA said that these should last another year, but I'll get all three mounts replaced in the next three months, just to be on the safer side.
The mounts are notorious. Had ours changed during the 4th year service under warranty. This year during the 5th year Annual service, I also got the steering column or some associated part replaced under warranty. It's quite a hastle to get the warranty claimed, but once you involve their social media team things move pretty swift. We also have a problem with some bearing in the gear box which was covered under warranty.
Ps : I had opted for extended warranty of 2 years making it 5. Good decision in retrospect.
My parents chose to drive down to Pune from Raipur instead of travelling via trains, thanks to Samruddhi expressway.
I accordingly got an opportunity to use our July 2018 Tiago for office duties and a few highway trips. As my Linea visited garage a couple of times in this timespan, Tiago became the primary mode of transport.
I drove Tiago for visiting Thane, Triyambakeshwar and few other places along with regular Hinjewadi traffic and below is my opinion on city/highway usage in no particular order:
1. Ride quality is plush - thanks to the 14 inch tyres and a pleasant surprise after Linea. However, same benefit turns to bane on highway due to relatively softer suspension. Handling is decent with Tiago keeping its composure in twisty roads.
2. With full load of 4 person and a ghat incline, AMT takes a bit of time to accelerate. The hesitation in switching from 2nd to 1st further accentuates this.
3. My comfortable speed in Tiago is definitely around 80-90. Weak breaks and lack of engine breaking doesn’t inspire confidence after that.
4. Sport mode is nice and it’s a zippy little car (ZICA anyone..)
5. As echoed by many others, this gearbox works best when you aren’t in hurry and using part throttle.
6. A/C is a chiller(I miss ACC which was made available on later variants) and music system is a definitely a USP.
7. Dashboard rattles to glory on slightest road imperfections.
8. Wiper/light stalks are of good quality and twin pod consoles look rich and classy.
9. Car is closing in on 34k and will cross 35k once it will reach its base location.
10. Gearbox definitely helps you relax in high traffic situation but not good enough for quickly closing gaps. In any of drive mode, it takes a bit of time and then lunges forward which result in coming too close of vehicle ahead and one need to break, typical AMT curse, I suppose.
11. It still looks chic and upmarket with beautiful dashboard design and upmarket looking central console.:thumbs up
Latest milestone captured earlier this month

This is not typical of Maruti AMTs but more prominent amongst Hyundai and Tata. My Wagon R AMT is very relaxed and the start off is pretty smooth and steady.

Try with a different phone as well. Android Auto works like a extended screen for your phone. The apps are running on your phone.
A slight lag in bluetooth audio is common while playing video. For phone calls it is good.
The HU has a slight lag overall. I have to be bit careful with the reverse sensor.
Can you comment on your Average city mileage(tank to tank) if you have that data. I echo your observations w.r.t the ride/AMT behaviour etc. I own a 2017 petrol Amt currently 24k in the odo. The biggest negative I feel is the city mileage which in my case hovers around 8.5-10.5kmpl( tank to tank) highways i do get 14-16kmpl.depending on the load and AC fan speed.

I maintain a table as following just to keep track on average. Last few readings T2T. Hopefully helpful. On average it is between 12 to 13, pure Bangalore city traffic driving.
Date. ODO. Liter. Avg
01052024 28407 27.97 12.98
21052024 28748 28.02 12.16

Hi. Regarding the AMT behaviour, with usage, the clutch wears out and the system compensates for the wear automatically. But if it's like surging forward as if the clutch is improperly released, do check the service centre and ask them for gear box/clutch kiss point calibration. This will force the gearbox to recalibrate the clutch release making it smoother in operation.

Update: Received a call from the ASS the next day (from a different person) and was informed that they are not accepting running repairs.... |
Update: Tata Motors contacted me regarding this (after seeing this in Team BHP) a couple of days ago. I received a call from the customer care manager involving the regional customer care manager and regional service planning and marketing manager. I explained my ordeal and those gentlemen regretted my experience with the ASS. They wanted to send a person from the ASS to my home for a free complimentary checkup as a gesture of goodwill. I had to turn down this since I had a travel plan that day. I mentioned that my car is due for service and asked them to book a service appointment on another ASS. But they asked me to reconsider the same service center and give them another chance and the customer care manager assured me that he would personally oversee that it will be done satisfactorily. I accepted this because of the assurance from TATA Motors and gave him my address. The manager sent me a confirmation email shortly after the call and the car is due to be picked up today (July 5th, 2024).
I shortly got a call from PPS Motors that they were waiting near my car park and wanted to meet me. I went to see them and 4 persons were waiting for me including the CRM, a senior/experienced mechanic/technician, a senior management staff from PPS motors and I guess the fourth person was from TATA motors. They apologized for my earlier experience and gave me a small flower bouquet and a car care kit. I accepted the bouquet and refused the car care kit. They assured me of good service this time and left my place. They called me a couple of times after they left but I could not talk to them due to network issues from my end. I'll update my service experience in a few days after the service is done.
Glad to see TATA Motors is taking customer grievances seriously and is acting upon them to address the situation.
Hi Everyone,
I have been considering Tata Tiago as my next purchase. I have driven Hyundai Santro xing (Kolkata city drive ) and Alto K10 ( Pune city and western ghats) before.
I'm also considering Maruti Ignis. In Tiago looking at either NRG XT (alternative of Ignis) or Tiago XM (save some bucks option).
Do you guys have any real life experience with the infamous Tata rusting problem with Tiago? The Tata sales person didn't give me any statistics but they are not denying that these things happened in some cases. I generally buy cars looking at long term and so worried about early rusting issues.
Any thoughts please?
