Its 5 weeks now and our Compass is inching towards the 7K mark. We had been on a trip to Mumbai and it was a nice drive to and fro. The fuel efficiency was close to 15 Kmpl including the city drives in Pune and Mumbai. Planning to pen down my ownership review, just that I am not getting much time to do that. Here are two pics taken during the trip,

You really have loads of patience mate. Yes, for a 2L engine it really gives some good numbers when the speed is maintained in the 80-100Kmph range.

I make use of engine brakes quite a lot while driving and I need to get used to engine braking for Jeep Compass. It's softer to my taste and less confidence inspiring for me.

Me too. I am used to engine braking in Linea big time and now it’s taking time to get used to the engine braking in Compass, especially when I am in 6th gear.

Congratulations on your Jeep, Arun :thumbs up A quick question on the engine braking - why do you think it is less? Lower compression ratio, perhaps?

I am not sure about the technicality behind this. Maybe it is more of getting used to the 6 speed gearbox. 2-3 times I have tried downshifting quickly from 6th gear, but it was not confidence-inspiring.

Try 6th to 4th and the down to 3rd. Suggest you skip the 5th gear while you want to brake. This is what I do in most 6 speed cars.

Won't coming to 4th from 6th directly give an unpleasant jerk?

Have driven the Compass extensively. This the best way to brake with the engine in my opinion. Have found nothing that would suggest that it was jerky.
The 6th to 5th hardly does anything for engine braking. The 4th to 3rd is the best. The easiest way out is to get to 4th as quickly as possible and then use the 3rd along with the brakes.

If the sixth and fifth gears both are overdrive, it would be hard to notice a difference.
Dropping from sixth to fourth shouldn't hurt as long as you match the RPMs. Let go of the accelerator and let the RPMs drop as low as you can allow, without the engine stalling. Then shift to fourth, again keeping the foot off the accelerator.
As you shift to fourth the RPMs should momentarily jump to the higher range and then again drop down.
I have regularly tried skipping a gear when downshifting, or even upshifting. As long as one matches the RPMs, both should be safe.

Verify this with the dealer as well. |
Verified and got both of them delivered as well.. Appreciate your help!
We were looking at options for different pedal designs and thought of going for the metal pedals, akin to the sports version which you see in TATA's JTP twins.
The dealer said there are several slip-on designs available in the market.
Could someone help us on this regard? I live in Bangalore and the cars am speaking of belong to my uncle!

The engine braking effect in the Compass is quite minimal and you hardly feel the effect. I was recently driving it in the hills near Mukteshwar and when going down steep slopes in 2nd gear, there was hardly any braking effect and one still needs to use the brakes to reduce the speed. Whereas in my laura if I release the brakes it has a very sharp engine braking control and if the accelerator is released the car speed drops to almost 20kmph very quickly and remains at that if I give no accelerator input. But this could be more like a Hill descent control feature in the Laura combined with ebc. (Though on paper they never mentioned that it has HDC!)
The Compass 4x2 which I have does not seem to have HDC while I think the 4x4 version has it.
Has anyone considered Tiguan but went for Compass ? Not really in the same league but any comments on the same ? Tiguan is not available with any dealer in India and they don't know when it will become available. No response from VW as well. The DSG gearbox is a major plus point for Tiguan along with the safety features and the build quality. Other than this, how far compass is behind or ahead when compared with Tiguan ?
Just noticed this in the Jeep compass website today. Jeep is already displaying their automatic transmission in the images, prior to the tailwind launch.

The major plus that I see with Tiguan viz Compass is the the DSG, better quality interiors and more cabin space .
Compass trumps it in all the other aspects :
1) More powerful engine mated with a slick manual shifter.
2) Better ride and handling making it more fun to drive
3) Butch looks. Not that Tiguan looks bad but it doesn't look like an SUV. Very understated, typical VW.
4) Compass has higher ground clearance as well and with Trailhawk around the corner the difference would increase only.
Safety and built quality wise both should be similar.
Hello,
I am attaching a PDF file about the extended warranty program that FCA is offering which my dealer sent to me. The price they quoted is ₹28000 for my october 2017 longitude (o) model. I think they have different prices for sport, longitude and limited variants starting from ₹25000 though I did not confirm it with them
Please give your valued inputs whether this EWP is worth buying

Revmatch should help you solve that issue. Agreed, the habit of Revmatch is a bit hard to develop but once you get used to it, then nothing like it.
45,000 kms service update
It's 45,101 on the odo and got the 45k service done last week. Decided to stick with True Sai motors in Salem for the service. Drove down from Bangalore to Salem on Friday morning. Was late in starting and by that time the traffic in Salem had picked up. It was 11am while i reached the service center.
Had to skip the wheel alignment and balancing as I was to get the TPMS installed. Skipped the wash also as it was raining. Work was completed around 3:30PM to full satisfaction.
ODO at the time of service. Its 15k/1 year from the last service date.
Was keeping an eye on the work from the lounge window
Got the ecu update done as well. Believe this was that emission one.
All set for the next 15k kms
Total damage for the 45k service was Rs. 11,800. Rs.3000 was for labor and the rest was on parts.
Some random pics over the last 15k kms
