Hello Friends,
So in pursuit of my happiness, I went shop hunting, door to door, some tyre dealers in Manimajra Auto Market in Chandigarh, Bansal Tyres, some few more but all in vain. Every one seemed to be aware of their existence, but to lay my hands on the actual rubber seemed a distant dream.
So I further ventured to Ludhiana, Velocity Tyres, they showed me everything under the roof, except what I exactly wanted. They would sell to out anything they have, quoting "Bhai, Gutti to same hi hai. After checking out all the Radars, Arrivo, Yokohama, Pirelli Scorpion, I decided to leave, but finally the owner of the store himself, mentioned, that they have 4 used Ko2s (300kms done) lying around, but they can try getting a fifth one.
Eventually I contacted Mr. Karan, in Delhi, found his contact here in teamBhp, posted by one of the respected members, and I am glad to say he was more than positive to get me what I desired. Finally on 4th March, drove all the way from Shimla to Delhi, accompanied by Mr. Leo, (my rottie pup) met Mr. Karan at around 4pm at his store , CR Park, New Delhi.
The choice of wheels I went for is Fuel Off-Road, in 17inches, negative offset. 8J, would have been preferred, but I had to settle with 9J, as 8j's were not available, tyre size being 265/65/R17.

I am in the same spot as you are. Went to Bansal Tyres and got the same reply when I said that I wanted to lower the size of the rim and have thicker sidewall. The suggestion was - Paaji, tussi 20 inch pao (Brother, go for 20 inch). He was pushing me for RADAR. Checked others and it seems like in Chandigarh, the trend as of now is to go for bigger rims.
Checked with BK Tyres and got quoted 25k for BFG's. What price did you get these for and I can say that you did find treasure. I am also planning to lower the size of the rim either with the same set of rims that you bought or will go for steel rims at 16 inch. Is Mr Karan with Chakra Tyres ? I have heard lot of good things about Chakra Tyres in Delhi.
We (Mom and Dad) have to visit a lot to Shillai and other interior areas in Sirmaur (Its a district in Himachal Pradesh), so need to have a thicker sidewall. Plus that NH will take atleast 2 years to 3 years to complete, I am not expecting the road condition to improve anytime soon. Does thicker sidewall affect the ride-quality by a lot or absorbs the impact of the road ? When I checked with the Service center person, he said that the ride quality will improve somewhere between 10 percent to 20 percent depending on how thick the sidewall is. About BFG's, my friend in Australia gave his testimonial. He drives FJ Cruiser and did off-roading/adventure camping in the outback mostly, that vehicle was driven on good roads for less than 5000 kms and rest 50,000 on the worst imagined roads.

Congratulations! I have s few questions for you-
How different is it driving with these over the stock?
What do you like about them and what do you dislike?
Did you see a noticeable difference on road? Did the turning radius change?

Ciao, & thanks for sharing valuable contacts here. It wouldn't have been possible without this platform.

Congratulations, I am taking delivery this week
Looking for change of wheels and shoes, not doing off-roading much but would like to enhance the looks of car and comfort, mostly driving on highways, do you suggest me same setup as yours? How much did you paid for complete set with exchange? Please share Karan’s number, safe drive.

8. Around 30k kms later the fm radio/antennae developed a strange problem. It wont recieve any signal. I cannot listen to radio in Thar. I visited service centre before Diwali 2021 for this issue and I was informed that there was some earthing issue. Problem remained. Again visited during December 2021, and I was told that some kind of wiring was required for antenna then I got a call from service center in January 2022 to bring my car for the radio issue. took my car but the problem could not be rectified. even in March 2022, I cannot listen to radio. |
Reply For Point #8
Good Day, Mine is a 2020 Diesel/AT/CT and I faced the same issue. During my service appointment the service center, replaced the complete antenna with a new one under warranty and then it started working fine. The only problem I faced is that the Infotainment touchscreen was removed and fitted back for the same and the fitting was not as it was before(Factory Fitted) and even the corners in the frame of the touchscreen had screwdriver marks.

Absolutely true, it seems, the bigger the better. In fact demand is so heavy, for bigger rims, that even the shopkeepers, are scratching their brains, when you ask for downsizing, they can't just understand, why in the world, would one want to do that. On a personal note, I feel, saddened, watching the much capable stock tyres, to be changed to something as big as 22inches, but then, to each to his own.
BK Tyres, had quoted 25K, to me as well, for 265/75/R16, but by that time I had already placed an order with Mr. Karan. Chakra Tyres is altogether a separate entity in Moti Nagar Delhi, where as Mr. Karan, has his own tyre store in CR Park, Delhi. Chakra tyres couldn't source these tyres for me, so, in that case Karan, is more resourceful. I had finalised my wheels, online on SaiMag wheels before heading to Delhi. Since I was running short of time, I had asked Karan to quote the price for the same wheels. Karan sourced the wheels, from Chakra Tyres (official distributor in collaboration with Saimag Wheels of all the imported wheels in Delhi), even though initially Karan was asking for 1L, for all 5 wheels, after showing him the quote directly from Chakra Tyres, he matched the price to 85K.
As for the tyres I paid 20,800.
So total stands 1,04,000 for tyres + 85,000 for wheels + 1000 Installation + 850 for the spare tyre mounting nuts & paana = Rs. 1,90,850.
Seems a bit on the higher side, but then considering I have been looking for this setup for almost a year now, I thought it's worth it.:coldsweat

Hi, thanks for asking. I have my inputs, but I would need others opinions as well.
So I have done around 12K so far since my ownership, which includes a month long drive from Shimla, Kinnaur, Spiti, Kaaza, Jispa, Upshi, Leh, Pangong Tso, Gulmarg, Pathankot, Amritsar, and few more trips from Shimla to Delhi.
How different is it driving with these over the stock?
Steering has gone a bit heavier, but only in stand still condition, once you roll, there's hardly any difference. However, again in standstill condition, whenever I steer all the way from one end to another, I can hear, slight kat kat kat sounds, with slight jerkyness on the steering wheel as well. So once I was done, in Delhi, I drove back to Chandigarh, and booked an appointment with Monga tyres for checking the wheel alignment. Even though Mr. Karan, in Delhi had advised, there is no need, as the tyres are new, and especially since I had just got done the wheel alignment checked in my 10K service.
So Bansal tyres - wheel alignment charges were only Rs 500.
However as per them, the camber, needed adjustments too worth Rs 1200 more.
I have no idea about this thing, but since I was there, and since it's kind of a heavy investment already done, I went ahead with the idea. After all done, the guy came along with me for a drive, and he mentioned, that alignment is satisfactory now, however, I still need to get the steering wheel straightened up, since I have gone for wider tyres. For now, I have dropped that Idea.
Need inputs from learned folks here, was it a hoax, to get this camber adjustment done or its actually needed..?
Secondly, do I need to straighten up the steering wheel..?
What do you like about them and what do you dislike?
Honestly, speaking the original stock tyres will serve you well. I have done the trips, and not once they have let me down. However, the winds were favourable, & weather not so extreme. What I like about them is the possibility of deflating them a bit more, where the situation demands, especially in heavy snow, or sluggish road conditions.
Secondly, the exclusivity of these tyres & their non-availability. With so many Thars running around, I started to feel that mine is just one more of the pack. So here comes the big motivation to make it more personalised, and therefore it definitely serves my cause.
Thirdly the aesthetics with a wider track pattern. I guess bigger wheels, filling the wheel arches more are not so satisfying to my eye, then having those bulky wheels, bulging out just a bit on either side, giving it that wider stance. Nothing to dislike there, I guess these are the best I could have got, so every time I watch my Thar, I have a big wide grin.
Did you see a noticeable difference on road? Did the turning radius change?
This is where I am surprised a bit. I am running them at 32pounds, as suggested by the service guys at Karan. However, I don't see much softening of the ride as stated by many here. Maybe I am doing something wrong. Can't say anything about reduction of body roll, as I am yet to drive towards, Shimla, and only on those curves I can make the difference. However every time I hit a pothole, that thud is there, transmitted all the way back to the steering wheel as before, so not sure if I should have been expecting something better.
Yes turning radius has definitely increased further, but then again on the tight mountain roads, its never a clean one shot U turn, u have to reverse in any case, however on tighter forest tracks it might be a concern. On the plus side, with the tyres being a bit outside of the fenders, u can visually see, where exactly, you are placing your tyres. So that's good.
I hope I have answered all your questions.;)
P.S I am attaching this Camber sheet for further inputs, what exactly did I achieve getting it done, plus is it really required.

Thank you for your patient and thorough replies. I really appreciate it. I think I will postpone my purchase of these tires till the time the stock ones serve well.
I completely agree with you on the aesthetics of these tires. They just look 'right' on a Thar! Or, one can say, that the Thar looks right with these tires lol:

I have answered most of the queries. Just briefly answering yours.
Looks enhancement is guaranteed, however considering your use, I don't see any value in that heavy investment. So I won't suggest.
Karan's number +91-9971099239. He is still left with one more set of the same spec tyres as mine, you can check with him, if interested.
P.S.- I didn't exchange, keeping the old set of tyres, just in case.
Thanks.
Installed Pioneer compos at the front of the vehicle. DIY job with help from one Phoenix.
Notes -
1. Taking off the A pillar plastic covers is a pain. Other posts have highlighted how it's to be done. The green colored clips break easily.
2. The tweeters are best positioned in the A pillars.
3. The box for the speakers by the knee are rather small - may polyfill them at some point for better extension.
4. Foam up everything! Makes for less noise in a bumpy car.
5. The connectors for the speakers can be wired without splicing easily. If you have black and white stripe speaker wire, the white goes to the black OEM cable. The black speaker wire goes to the red OEM cable. Best believe.. Also, I used RTV gasket maker to seal (reversible) the speaker connectors and the tweeter holes.
6. You'll still need to bias the speakers to the front via the stereo fader, to achieve decent imaging. I didn't disconnect the top mounted tweeters, since it'll deprive anyone sitting at the back of clarity.
7. The Pioneers seen in the Pic are for 3.1k from motorogue. They're the cheapest 90W RMS speakers with rubber surrounds and can take abuse. I have an earlier version of them installed in a sunny, four years old now. Those were 60W so I assume 90w means better build quality.
8. The plastic speaker covers need to be trimmed else they'll push against any replacement speakers' surrounds. 6.25 inch mount speakers will fit without any spacers/ adaptors.

This is a PSA for anyone who's swapped the stock front speakers with 6.5"ers!! Thanks to @wooka for getting me to check this, kicking off my OCD rl:
Zoom into this, you'll see the marks from the enclosure, esp. on the top of the rubber surrounds of the driver -
The culprit -
The solution - I chopped off 0.5 cm from the ring that's meant to channel the sounds. @wooka recommended 1 - 2cm if you're driving it with an amp (I do not!)
The result (WIP, I have grounded it to a smooth (er) finish than this) -

Be that as it may, I can assure that at least in Lucknow the Mahindra customer care tries really hard to ensure help reaches you asap and the service center guys genuinely try to help you. I am happy with the services. clap:clap: |
I'm glad that Mahindra service in Lucknow was so helpful in your case. In my case (we had a Scorpio then '04-'19) I found their service (Narain Motors at the time) to be thoroughly unscrupulous in their customer care.
Our Thar BS6 is in Kolkata and so far we have no cause for complains regarding the ASS (Royal Motors).
Hello Thar owners,
Recently I have noticed that my Brake pedal goes hard overnight. Everything is fine the day before, I last parked it in my Garage at around 6 pm, next morning at 8 am, I find the brake pedal hard. Although it is a random incident, Does not happen always. I have encountered this behavior 3 times so far.
Is there any vacuum leak or any other owner is having similar experience?
I own the Diesel AT.
And yes, I have not pumped the brake pedal multiple times with the engine off in the morning or in the evening, the day before.

I think you have figured this one out, definitely seems like there is a minor leak in the system. You can get it checked at the service centre, maybe its just a loose clamp at the end of the hose.
Saw this flyer today. What has happened!!
Is this the XUV effect?
I was of the impression that thar commanded a waiting period of more than 10 months!
Hello friends,
Can someone guide me to the right source/product for getting, anti theft wheel nuts or similar kind of arrangement, so that the spare mounted wheel cannot be stolen.
Can the same arrangement be used, on the remaining four wheels as well?
