Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

I have a 2023 4x4 Thar Petrol Manual HT. It's quite new and have done only 1600 kms on it. Last weekend I had an acrid burning (like a plastic burning) smell coming from the car and I could also smell it in the cabin. This was on a moderate uphill, in a traffic jam, Hill Hold Assist was getting engaged every now and then. And after about 5 mins, the smell got really bad.

We had to stop and check if something was wrong. I called the RSA, they offered no technical help but asked me if I want towing service. I said no to the towing service, because the vehicle was drivable after 15 minutes. I popped up the bonnet and I couldn't make out where the smell was coming from, no obvious source of smell or smoke.

Some observations:
- No warning Tell Tale Signs.
- Parking Brake wasn't engaged while driving as Thar as an audio alert if that happens.
- Engine Temp was about 30% on the C to H scale.
- The Clutch Play was normal.

The Monday after I called PPS Mahindra Service and spoke to an advisor. He told me that it was completely normal, because I might have rode the clutch for a bit. And, the Hill Hold Assist getting engaged, might have aggravated it. I have been driving for about 18 years, and this is my 3rd car and I have never had this problem.

Today, I took the Thar out, I could smell the same acrid smell but it was very very faint.

After market things I have added on to the Thar:
- Changed the Grill
- Changed the LED Headlights, but got it done by PPS Mahindra

Is this normal?
I'm going to take the Thar to the service station, what should I ask the Tech to check? They have been claiming that this is normal.

Thanks for the prompt reply! I checked with them but they quoted 1.2L for the same which was beyond my budget

My dealer is offering a normal reversing camera and an HD camera. Has anyone experienced the HD camera?

Hi Members,
What is the general consensus on getting paint protection for Thar. I finally got gray one allocated against my booking and wondering if its worth the money given offroading nature of vehicle. If yes is ceramic good enough or PPF worth the money.

Waste of money in my book. Granite grey doesn't show scratches and dirt and muck, same as my Rocky Beige. And a Jeepy sort of thing with PPF and similar molly-coddling treatment somehow goes against the grain for me.

Just as Shankar mentioned, Thar is pretty high enough to get scratched/dented plus it’s full lower body is plastic with metal side steps.

I ve put the company provided mountain picture decals along the sides so that any rough stuff can be mitigated to some extent. It works pretty ok when I do go into narrow places with branches and brambles scratching the sides and all that.

You should be able to get it from places like JC road I believe. The Chennai fellow is an authorized dealer and I have purchased from him in the past, so ordered through him. He ships to Bangalore.
Can you please let me know the dealer's name in Chennai? Or the shop name? I need to upgrade my lamps, and this looks like a good first step.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Any idea what's the current Thar price in NCR area? Any discounts going on currently? I got one allocated recently and want to know if I can expect any discounts from dealer before I close the deal. When I made the booking 6 months back there was 40K discount going on which doesn't seem to be there now along with 10K price hike in price.

It turned out to be an absolute waste of money - It's a standalone unit that isn't integrated with the HU or car in anyway. It is so loud that it can be heard at least 50 meters away from the car. More than an alarm it shocks/ distracts the driver, I wonder if it was tested / approved as a street legal accessory. I would suggest that prospective buyers stay away from wasting money on this accessory.
Could you share a couple of pictures of this standalone unit for front parking sensors?

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Yesterday I had to do a day trip Bangalore-Coorg and back with a friend. The traffic was orderly and patient. All good.

Today I drove with my Dad to Madras. All fine overall but after Chenna Samudram the road surfaces are really very poor. It is saddening to see that even the stretches of road which were relaid nicely last year at this time, have become patchy with real bad sores on the surface, all due to the recent deluge of rains.

However, with the Thar and the AVO suspension we simply sailed through the whole journey.

The Thar (WRONGLER) really is a perfect Brother-in-Arms for our general Indian Road conditions.

Team,
Need some help from esteemed members here.
Dealer is asking me to do PDI in showroom instead of stockyard. Should I consider this a red flag? I think vehicle is new and VIN shared salesperson shows Nov manufacturing only.

Dont stress. I also did my PDI at showroom when I bought mine. Its a Mahindra. Generally in my experience the Dealers are reasonable folks. You just have to take the time and trouble to build a relationship with them.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Driving from Madras to Bangalore nowadays is like an off road rally track. Luckily I was in my Thar (WRONGLER) today and honestly I was able to just ‘send it’ over all those rough patches and potholes and corrugations without a care in the world. Nothing quote like the confidence the Thar is able to inspire. It is really no wonder that India and Indians are crazy about SUV’s.
