It is the type of display on the Superb whereas the Ambiente has the type of display on the lower end Lauras. With the Maxidot you can adjust many functions, like whether you want km/l or l/100km. Basically small but useful things. And also it shows information on the music being played.

With the normal display, only the trip computer functions are available.

My reaction was exactly the same. The 'road presence' was not there. I hope it has the goodies inside to justify the 17L tag.

Well the X1 is going to be priced from 22L for the petrol and 23L for the diesel!! Game on! I wonder how many people will ditch the CRV, fortuner, endeavour, outlander (which are much more spacious than the X1) for the X1!

A few more details about the BMW X1. Its going to be launched officially on 23rd December (Santa coming to town early). Its going to be available in the petrol and diesel. The petrol will be the 1.8L petrol engine. The interesting one will be the 2.0 diesel. No 4x4. Its going to be RWD. 3 versions of each of course. The corporate edition with the same features as the 320d CE and then we get the usual bells and whistles in the highline and the top of the "cool elegance". The cool elegance comes in at ~ 32L ex-showroom.

This should be fun!!

you would be surprised how many people would go for the badge value while compromising some of the other points.
lets wait for the sales figures once it gets launched - then we will see!

When I was evaluating options, I had considered waiting for the X1 - and for the badge value, ~20L is a fantastic price. The question, though, will be the cost of maintenance. Also, looks wise, frankly, I think it could have looked more like an SUV and less like the car that it looks like right now, to win more fans.

Don't be fooled by the exyernal size. It is small on the outside but inside, the space is pretty good. Relatively small size has several advantages. Great power/torque to weight ration to start, makes Yeti behave like a race car, while delivering great FE.

At the same time while the likes of Fortuner have to tread with caution Yeti can go places.

It accelerates better than most X-overs, is more comfortable than most and loaded to gill with useful goodies.

Sure it is no competition to a full blown SUV. But it does go where no Sedan will ever dare to tread.

I totally agree. The yeti is just the "right amount of SUV" every urban commuter needs. It is more spacious than most C+ segment sedans. And that space does not come at the expense of a very long car that is difficult to park in the city.You sit tall enough so as to escape the piercing headlights of on-coming vehicles. It has features like the day-night mirrors and the defogging mirrors that aid night driving. It has an FE that rivals most C+ segment sedans. And and engine that puts most of them to shame ! Has among the most luxurious cabins and a bunch of smart features/gizmos thrown in. The price is just a shade above these cars I am comparing with.

Spot on IMO!

Test drove the Elegance model today. For my needs its size is just right. It handled well. The engine is good. However, I will give it a miss simply because it does not have A/T. Shifting gears, every now and then, is cumbersome.

Really well compiled review. Electrically retractable ORVMs, USB input are some glaring omissions. But, i really liked the storage options, especially the plastic clip, the elastic cords, the adjustable rear seats.
The pic with the Nano was a brilliant idea.
The review's got me excited about the car, had they added the DSG, would've made quite a case for itself. Pricing's right too.
My only concern is how many people will find this "un"contemporary design to their liking. As blackasta rightly said, it does look a bit dated excluding the front end

I thought in global markets the X3 is meant to compete with CRV, RAV4 category and X1 is a mini ute based on the mini. Besides the bmw badge, I think X1 is way overpriced for the category it is meant to be in.

Test drove a Yeti yesterday.
Some observations /comparision with my Octavia -
1.Steering felt light as compared to my TPI
2.Leg space better both front and back.
3.Turning circle lesser than my Octy despite longer wheel base(great for the City).

4.Passenger (shoulder)width feels lesser than the Octavia and much lesser than a Laura. (we hopped in an out of a Laura too !) Maybee i am wrong here as actual outer widths of Yeti, Laura and Octy are 1793, 1769 and 1731 mm resp, so why should the Yeti feel narrower ?? I plan to actually measure my Octy width in and out and post here. Can someone do it for the Laura and Yeti ?
5. Basic boot only 415 lits. Laura 560 and the Octy 528.
6. Does not have the road presence of an SUV

To sum up i would say the Yeti makes sense for city driving and rough road driving (more than the Laura/Octavia), but on the expressway ! Nah....i'd prefer a big SUV or my car.
Just my point of view.

Had a really short TD today of the car -

-Diesel engine is very refined, and reasonably rev happy
-Gearbox is a delight to use, short slick shifts. Though I wish there was a DSG
-I stalled the first time, its more to do with the clutch having a springy action than there being less torque.
-Space inside is decent.
-Built solidly, interiors have quality and feel like they will last.
-Nice amount of gadgets, though I wish it had Xenons.
-Overall a great car(?). Perfect for the city, just perfect.

The width in the rear seat is actually adequate.I have been driving around in Yeti for over 1500 km now. Substantial part of this was driven with two adults accompanied by two children in the rear seat. They felt there was ample space in the rear.

The reason it feels narrower than Octi or Laura, is probably because there are three seats, rather than a bench - as would be a case with octavia or Laura.

I am curious to know why would you prefer an Octavia over a Yeti on the expressway.AFAIK, the octavia came with an archaic PD engine with some 90 horses which can't hold a candle to the Yeti's superb CRDI motor.
Also, from the various reports, the Yeti handles like a car and has very less body roll unlike a big SUV and will be much faster than a big SUV. So, why a big SUV is better in the expressway?

I am just curious to know your answer.

For that you need to drive the Octavia - specifically the 150BHP Tpi or the RS. What a handler - with 130mm GC and 16" tyres it grips the surface like anything. And that turbo charged petrol engine pulls like a magic...
