Car : 1962 Standard Herald MK1

Restoration start date - March 2007 (By the owner at previous work shop)

Project start date-15th September 2008 ( The day the car was handed over to me)

Actual start date -4th December 2009 ( The day the project finally took off)

I feel you guys would have got a fair idea about what i am meaning to convey:D

The car has been to 2 different places so far, before the project took off.

Without wasting time, will now update the WIP:)

The last pic depicts the proposed outcome.

That embossing on the seats is so classy!!!
She looks good, would love to see her in better shape!! :-)

Good to know it has finally taken off Pavan! I look forward to see the car back soon. Its been a similar story with my car. After I took it, it stayed for almost a year with that mechanic, and its running fine now, but a complete work (mainly cosmetic) has to be done. Wanted to meet up with you last couple of weekends, but was away. We will meet this weekend. I somehow love the standards - 10, 8, herald, gazel; don't know why, may be just because I have one and I can relate to it well! Anyways, good luck, and let me know if I can be of some help.

I've faced a similar story with my Lambretta! 'hope to finish it ASAP now.

Anyways, wow, pavan!! Nice to see a separate standard resto thread at last! I know I know, I get the hint! :D

Although before opening the thread, I thought it was another '62 Herald that you'd told me about earlier (1-owner one, for sale at a steep price?)

I didn't realise that this car too is an early Herald, even though you'd sent me the pics. once earlier.

The present dashboard is from a Gazel. Do try for the original dash, although it's next to impossible to procure here, having come only for the early Heralds (later models had wood-veneered ones, which can be easily fabricated) Most of them have had their dashboards changed/modified later too!
Importing maybe the only option. A '62 Herald I had did have the original dash intact though, this is what it looks like:

Also your proposed outcome for the car looks accurate! That is the kind of colour option these early Heralds came in, with black being the only single colour option until a year later. This kind of 2-tone existed only on Heralds, known as "duotone", with the top and lower-half being the same (darker) colour and only the "waist" (inc. bonnet top and bootlid) being white.
I personally like to call it the "half-saree" 2-tone, as that's what the colour pattern reminds me of....for further clarification, check out the 'resemblance' in this song:

YouTube - Jabilli Kosam [with lyrics] - Manchi Manasulu [1986] - Ilayaraja [Male & Female Voice}

And yes, these Heralds did come out even in the colour combo as in the above video, known more precisely as sebring white and litchfield green. ;)

Do try to find out what colours this car was in, while the paint is being scraped off.

Anyways, I hope, more than anyone else, to see this car in it's former glory! Good luck!

The embossing on the seat covers seem to be common in Bangalore? Another Herald I know of here, whose owner had lived in Bangalore earlier (1-owner car) too has similar seats with some kind of embossing.

Nice to know you have a Standard too! Which one is it?

Stanhergaaru, The hint is simple.

I want you to be more active on this thread than me:)

Though i can work towards the Tinkering/Painting and getting the car to run best at its mechanicals,I know very little about the cosmetics.

So saaaaar, need your help all through.

Pavan though have little knowledge about Heralds like to see the project through and of course keep the pictures and posts coming. The front grille looks more like a 1980's design by someone. And the apt song would be "Wake Up Std"!

Shyam..the Herald comparison with the yesteryear Telugu song is uncanny.
@Pavan.Congrats on the restoration job and will be eager to see the finished outcome.

Your wish is my command, saar! Dont even ask and you shall receive!! Hehe!
Uh, the hint I got was a different one though- 'thought it was about starting a separate thread about the restoration of one's own standard cars rather than posting them in a 'common' thread, as you'd suggested once.

Yes, its not the original 2-piece grille, looks like a mesh from an iron gate/ventilator. The front black-painted piece is original though, supposed to have the Standard emblem badge at the middle in the division.
Front bumper-guards also are from a later Herald.
But pavan did tell me he knew someone who does have an original grille and guards? Any news on them, pavan?

You're right, ram! Uncanny it sure would seem if you compare the car with the song- which wasn't my point at all! :uncontrol
To clarify, I was comparing the 2-TONE COLOUR schemes of the early Heralds (like the grey and white one posted in pavan's first post) with the COLOURS OF HALF-SAREES (a.k.a langa-voni in telugu), and since this was the first song featuring said attire I found on searching in youtube, I posted it's link here. That's all. I'm not referring to any aspect of the song or music etc. as those are not relevant here.
Incidentally, (as per my imagination atleast!) a Herald in the early 2-tone colour scheme could be personified as a belle clad in a half-saree.....not sure how many (guys) would like that, but I sure would as I'm a sucker for both! :D

Pawan,

Yesterday as herald was scrapped in Bangalore Gujari, Arun has more info on it. Might be that you can find some thing of use on your project :). All the best for the resto. Plz. also provide me your contact info.

2 days and the tinkering is going at rocking pace.

Almost all panels done, just tapping process to be started today along with fitting the panels back and checking on the fit and finish.

Some pics

Good Progress Pavan. Are you making this into a convertible with a soft top.

Is that a beetle Limo, I'm seeing in the background?

Yes bud's thats the Limo Bug, come for some minor work.:)

Pavan,
I can see the denting's coming along pretty good!

But more importantly, are you taking the body off the chassis and getting the latter sandblasted and "throwed" (aligned)?

IMHO, it is important for every Herald that is undergoing a thorough resto as this one, considering that if they've reached this stage, they would've been well-abused and/or long neglected. This is one that most garage owners simply overlook, and focus on finishing only the body!

Pavan saar! Hungry for updates!! :D

Also wanted to point out to you btw- it looks as though the car still has a white-wall tyre left on (the RH front one)

IF it's still in good condition, I suggest you swap it temporarily for an ordinary tyre while the denting/painting goes on. You don't want to have a good white-wall tyre messed up, they are so hard to find today (for Standards atleast)
