Re: The SAIL Badal Some facts compiled by me from various sources:-
Badal, the three-wheeled, micro-car prodigy was introduced by M/s Sunrise Automotive Industries Limited (SAIL), Bangalore, in 1975. Production commenced in 1976 and the three wheeled car was priced at around Rs 15,000/- then. Badal was among the earliest examples seen from an indigenous automobile manufacturer to put in efforts, with the limited resources available and the then several restrictions of the Licence Raj for them, to manufacture and sell products with the then extant pricing controls, dictated by the government. Production wise during 1977 a total of 179 units were manufactured, while it was 331 in 1978 – a peak, 104 in 1979, 51 in 1980 and a measly 31 in 1981. A replacement was conceptualised in 1981, badged as the Badal – 4, with four wheels, having a rectangular body shell with a front mounted engine. It remained only a concept at the end of the day and was not marketed by the company. The Sipani Dolphin was ushered in very soon.
The power train of the Badal was the trusted Italian origin Lambretta three wheeler engine that was rear-mounted, air-cooled, two stroke, 198 cc with a 10 PS (7.4 Kw) power output, with a constant mesh, four speed gearbox.
Nearly during the end of its model life, Badal was immortalized in the Bollywood hit film “Ram Balram” (1980) by it’s depiction in the hit song “ Ek rasta do rahi” lip synced by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra and all through its duration, showing the micro three wheeler as a no nonsense vehicle to take on the rough and smooth surfaces.
