re: Euro-NCAP: 2017 Suzuki Swift secures 3 & 4 stars (with safety pack)

It is commendable how a well thought, well engineered structure can really survive crash tests. Kudos where its due, hope the same structure and reinforcement is maintained in India specific car as well.

On a side note, pedestrian leg test shows how wafer thin bonnet flexes even at slightest impact. Attention, this test checks for that plastic bumper absorption capacity and flexibilty which it does well, please don't come after me with the theory for wafer thin sheet metal in bonnet.

De-link - not quite!
A thread is created on the Swift or the NCAP safety rating for the Kodiaq is shared because these are slated for India. For e.g.; a Seat Ateca might have got 5-star NCAP rating, but that probably won't be discussed here because of no relevance in India context.

Kodiaq for India will be the same car as built in Czech. while Swift will be a locally built car for India.

AEB - A vital system for Euro-NCAP ratings.

Quote:
For AEB Interurban systems, Euro NCAP evaluates the automatic brake function and the forward collision warning function in three different driving scenarios: driving towards a stationary vehicle (30-80km/h), closing in at a slower vehicle in front (30-80km/h) and following a car in front which suddenly starts braking (50km/h, gentle and harsh braking).
Quote:
A high score is awarded to systems that are able to avoid a collision in all test conditions, or are able to significantly reduce the severity of the crash.

Meanwhile here are the Euro-NCAP ratings of 2016/17 cars (hatchback/super-mini)

Kodiaq was mentioned just as an example relevant in Indian context.

Thanks! I do understand Auto Emergency Braking, and have already read the details on NCAP website

re: 2017 Suzuki Swift secures 3 & 4 stars in Euro NCAP, and 4 & 5 stars in ANCAP

The 2017 Maruti Dzire in India weighs in at around 870 kilos (Petrol; Source: Carwale) which should be around 60-70 kilos heavier than new Swift (as per older models). That put put the new Swift due for launch in India later this year to be around 800-810 kilos. Is there any data on the kerb-weight of the car tested? The UK version is 890 kilos I think (1.2L Petrol; Source: Autoexpress UK). That should give us an idea how much difference is there between the European model and the model that is due for India (or even the Dzire). If the difference between the Indian Swift and tested car is in excess of 30-40 kilos, I feel these tests have no implications for India.

Please feel free to correct me if any of my data is incorrect.

This rating is good and very much what we expected. But the stars are low as the new ratings also include the active safety systems which anyway aren't coming here. Now I wait for the Global NCAP to test the new DZire and the Baleno.
Those would be the most relevant cars to test given their high sales.

Your assumption that The Swift has lower kerb weight than the similar gen Dzire, is a bit flawed. While the first gen Dzire was heavier by 30kgs IIRC, the second gen sub 4m Dzire weighed the same as the hatchback it was based on.

Quoting Team BHP's official review:
Quote:
The Dzire overall uses lighter metals, a plastic fuel tank (instead of metal) and super-thin window glasses (more on that later). Interestingly, the kerb weight of the Swift & Dzire is identical for the L variants. Remember, hatchbacks require additional strengthening around the C pillar & hatch area from the safety point of view, and for structural rigidity. Due to this point, I wouldn't be surprised if the Dzire actually costs lesser to manufacture than the Swift.
Regards,
Shashi

Thank you for the clarification, I was not aware of this fact .

It would still be interesting to know how different the tested model is from the model that is due for India (or for that matter the recently launched Dzire). For me, the only way the end customer can know (apart from the safety packs) is by the kerb weight. I am sure that is not an air-tight method as strength of the steel used is more important but at least gives some idea about them being different.

re: 2017 Suzuki Swift secures 3 & 4 stars in Euro NCAP, and 4 & 5 stars in ANCAP

2017 SUZUKI SWIFT Scores get FIVE-Star ANCAP ratings in all variants except the entry level, which gets 4 Star.

All versions of the new-generation Suzuki Swift bar the entry-level GL get a five-star rating .

Quote:
The tested model of Suzuki Swift was introduced in Australia and New Zealand in June 2017. This ANCAP safety rating applies to the GL Navigator, GL Navigator with Safety Pack and GLX Turbo variants (1.0 litre and 1.2 litre models). A separate rating applies to GL (base) variants.

Quote:
The GL’s score was truncated due to it not satisfying the safety assist technologies requirement for a five-star rating – it misses out on the rear-view camera and hill-start assist of the GL Navigator, and therefore doesn’t feature at least six driver assist systems over the standard safety gear required for a five-star score
Quote:
Its structural performance in crash testing is very good

ANCAP SAFETY RATING: Suzuki Swift (June 2017 - onwards). Frontal offset test at 64km/h.
