Car Crash Investigation - Research and Analysis

Car Crash Investigation

To prevent accidents, we need a better understanding of why accidents happen in the first place. And that’s where JP Research comes in.

On-site

A heap of twisted metal that’s lying beside a flyover support pillar. The car is so badly deformed, it’s unidentifiable as a Maruti Wagon R.

It’s critical to make preliminary observations and make note of volatile evidence such as skid marks, at the earliest.

Tyre marks help detail the car’s path from the main expressway, onto the shoulder, then the grass-covered run-off area and finally, to the point at which it halted.

Meticulousness is a key requirement for the job of data collection. Every little bit of evidence is a crucial piece necessary to solve the larger jigsaw puzzle. More details, please read full article below:

A crash involves the participation of 3 factors – human, vehicle and a specific environment (infrastructure).
  • Crash Scene inspection
  • Vehicle inspection
  • Victim/Witness interviews

JPRI had been discussed recently on this forum in the thread related to BHPian arvindb4's XUV5OO crash (XUV500: Severe crash, but not a single airbag deployed (driver injured)).

Thanks for sharing!

The need of the hour is an independent review of accidents and their understanding! It can go a long way in not only analysing accidents, but also prevent them in the future.

It will also be beneficial for road builders, highway planners, city developers to account for possible scenarios of accidents and incorporate design changes as required. Car makers can get hold of the data and incorporate changes in future models making them safer.

Re: Car Crash Investigation - Research and Analysis

Despite of all the tools, studies and intelligence available, each of the accidents where a car jumps the median and collides with the oncoming traffic of the dual carriageway is concluded as 'tire burst' merely on the basis of prima facie. This is just one of the examples where conclusions are perhaps quicker than the actual time it may have taken to cause that accident.

Our roads are getting extremely dangerous now with increased traffic. Thanks to easy access to new cars and even self drive options. Not to forget the very basic fact that now most popular routes that were earlier single carriageway are converted to dual and this has also resulted in many preferring to drive than take other transport options (Flight, Train, Bus or rental).

Since the thread is referring to studies that refer to analyzing the mangled remains of a crashed vehicle or root cause analysis to find what went wrong with the driving, If I strictly talk about the driving aspects of these tests, and want to talk only about what driver errors are, the list can be endless.

Head out on a highway on a typical weekend and see the jokers go past you at breakneck speeds, without seat belts and folded or wrongly adjusted mirrors (OP posts about video where lane change caused an accident). The same drivers will miserably fail to drive properly on a single carriageway as soon as they exit the dual carriageway!

Hardly a small population who drives understands the importance of gradually slowing down or accelerating when exiting or merging onto a highway. Your car and your body needs to adjust to faster roads after you get out of your city and the duration of this adjustment is extremely crucial. The converse is also true and you really need to go ease on that A pedal as you enter city limits or passing through the busy bypass of a big city. All this is controlled by your mind and not by those pair of hands and legs driving your car.

A larger population also wrongly judge the incapability of Heavy vehicles to manage maneuvers like braking in time or change lanes as cars do.

We will have lots of capability in future that will come to aid after each accident but when it comes to prevention of these, there is so much effort needed to set the driving attributes of your drivers right and I have lesser hope on this.

Being casual has a new trend, its called driving! You will find highly errant drivers breaking all the rules very casually behind that wheel.

Agree
Spreading Awareness of the results of such Studies and Research, also will go a long way in preventing these mishaps.

One of the biggest causes of modern day accidents is the INCREASED DRIVER DISTRACTION caused due to INCREASED USE OF MOBILES and IN-CAR TECH.
Distracted drivers are a worldwide problem.

Here is a relevant report

In-car tech blamed road deaths
Figure has risen 11 per cent over the last decade

Quote:

figures from the European Commission suggesting that between 10 and 30 per cent of collisions in Europe are caused by road user distraction,
while US Department for Transportation statistics showed 3,477 people died that year in the country due to a driver being distracted by a mobile phone.

According to IAM Roadsmart,
  • 29 per cent of in-car distractions are caused by children,
  • 27 per cent by changing the radio channel,
  • 26 per cent by backseat drivers,
  • 24 per cent by mobile phone calls and
  • 15 per cent by sat-nav systems
... found programming a sat-nav was the worst distraction for drivers. This was followed by ... in-car infotainment screens.
Quote:
Tony Greenidge, IAM RoadSmart, commented: “ with increasing the sophistication of in car technology there is an unintended consequence that requires drivers – typically in real time – to decide how to best process and utilise the information provided.”
