Re: Samruddhi Mahamarg Expressway - 25 people charred to death as bus catches fire

Very sad incident, unfortunately so many innocent lives lost due to no fault of there's. What I personally observed is that it becomes very boring, dull and ouright drowsy especially on straight well maintained roads on a longish stretches. Also observed that people outright over estimate there's and vehicle capabilities at high speeds, they are never trained to handle emergency situations (driving manoeuvres). Our people never learn from mistakes, they keep on making same ones time and time again.

Why no one is talking about escape window or door, most of the media is fixated on highway hypnosis.

Indian should set up Accidents Investigation Agency. This would be tasked with all the investigation work, will leave less room for rumors.

There are so many vehicles nearby, and yet nobody came to their rescue? Or at the very least give it a try? All I can see are the onlookers. Does the modernization of infrastructure make people more inhumane? Okay, maybe.

True. Such safety features should be made mandatory in buses and trucks that do late night services. TPMS, ADAS, Driver monitoring etc. Or do we already have such laws in place?

Re: Samruddhi Mahamarg Expressway - 25 people charred to death as bus catches fire

I travelled on the Mahamarg between 21st May and 4th June, did not see any RTO officials all along the route to and from Nagpur from Shirdi, Nashik. This is during onwards and return journey and nowhere did I see any checking for tyre or anything else. Who is lying here - https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/in...-10898291.html

Most checks and fines are just money collection excercise and nothing else. The govt is not bothered or serious about safety. Safety is in oiur hands, we need to be careful on the roads, drive safe and stay within speed limits.

Re: Samruddhi Mahamarg Expressway - 25 people charred to death as bus catches fire

After the horrifying incident, a PUC centre in Yavatmal (Mah) issued a PUC certificate for the same bus, the next day at 10.30 am ( 9 hours later) that has also been detected on the VAHAN portal. The Transport Commissioner of Maharashtra has sought explanation from the Dy RTO, Yavatmal.

It just shows the height of corruption and how much hand in glove the RTO officials are with govt work outsourced private agencies.

Probably this PUC document is a pre requisite to claim the insurance and the bus owner wants to take the system for a ride.

I haven't done the PUC lately in India, but few years back it was a totally sham.

Now more skeletons are coming out of the cupboard or "locker" if the latter term can be treated as more appropriate.

The bus was registered in the name of Ms Pragati Darne, wife of a police officer Mr Bhaskar Darne. And the PUC centre is located right opposite the Yavatmal RTO office. PUC certificate was issued for this bus nine hours post the tragedy.

Just wanted to see, how the diesel tank is protected and observed this on a truck with a proper reflective strip.

Re: Samruddhi Mahamarg Expressway - 25 people charred to death as bus catches fire

With more and more skeletons coming out from the locker according to the the chemical analysis report of the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL), Amravati, the driver Shaikh Danish had 30% more than the legal alcohol limit in his blood sample collected on the day of the accident. The blood alcohol content (BAC) legal limit in Maharashtra is 0.03% or 30mg alcohol in 100ml blood.

The report revealed that diesel caused the fire and its quick spread, giving little opportunity to the 25 victims to escape.

The Ashok Leyland bus was converted to a sleeper coach. Sources said the accident has raised the possibility of the government reviewing design of sleeper buses in the near future.

Booked under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, driver Danish’s blood sample report may lead to his conviction resulting in 10 years of imprisonment and fine. Experienced police officials said over 30% alcohol limit in blood is ‘too high’ and ‘dangerous for driving’.

The vehicle had also been ‘challaned’ (for traffic violations) 25 times. The bus owner had paid only six fines, while 19 are unpaid, said deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Pradeep Patil, who is investigation officer in the case under the supervision of SP Buldhana Sunil Kadasne.

Police said Danish started driving the bus from Karanja, after another driver Arvind drove it from Nagpur. The bus entered the Samruddhi Mahamarg from Karanja Lad at 11.08 pm and met with the accident at 1.32 am, around 152km on the eway. With the alcohol intake, the driver must have been drowsy.

“The blood sample was drawn quite late after he was arrested, which may have also lowered the percentage to considerable extent. It’s quite possible the alcohol percentage was even higher when he was driving,” said the source.

The police are yet to conclude on the culpability of the owner of the bus, and are verifying the details of ownership and other records.

Re: Samruddhi Mahamarg Expressway - 25 people charred to death as bus catches fire

The skeletons have started piling up and sadly I am not surprised.

This article by Bob Rupani on Overdrive shares the design of these sleeper buses and only when you see it do you realize that the windows were almost useless as emergency exits.

Strict laws and enforcement regarding the design of public transport, materials used and its crew training and responsibilities should be the top of the priority list for the MoRTH and the minister.
This should be easy to achieve and take precedence over everything else.
