High-handedness of police I would say. I did it once on two motorcycles, one CBZ and another one Hero ambition in my college road at evening, it was fun, everybody from medical, engg to pharmacy students cheered and were spirited. I don't think anybody other than us friends remembered it after couple of months. Stupidity was concentrated at that time. SM has diluted it and spread it everywhere.

Glad there was no social media at that time.

Is this legal to have boot open? And in addition to legal matters, how safe it is to drive on a busy road with boot open and kids in it?

Is it illegal to have common sense?

Six passengers on a scooter in Mumbai making merry on this video posted today evening on twitter by an alert citizen Mr Hora near Star Bazaar, Andheri West. One passenger is leaning on someone's shoulder, perhaps there being no space on the seat for him.

I did a leisurely 300 Km trip yesterday from Hosur to Chennai in our TUV 300. I usually cruise at 80 Kmph. And so, this leisurely speed allowed me to spot an erratically driven 2 wheeler in advance, as it crossed the highway from the other side of the median and came onto my path. I was able to anticipate the erratic rider and had braked gently well in advance.

I gave him a mini honk when he was cutting across the lanes barely in front of my bonnet and it scared the hell out of him!

It might be prudent of me to just honk loudly and incessantly to prevent worse outcomes. But I continue to pursue my 'no honking' policy, instead relying on my sedate driving and braking...so help me God. I know I'm committing a mistake in not honking like every desi driver.

I had a minimal honking policy till I met with a nearly fatal accident, in a similar situation as yours.

Now I believe in "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" policy. Better be safe and let the other guy know of your presence, since most riders ride without side mirrors in India.

I intend to begin honking all the time starting from the time I take the car out next. :thumbs up And I've been riding my RE Electra without a functioning horn for a year now; will get that fixed as well. Yesterday's near-miss has left me thinking that things could've easily turned out to be much worse.

This is one thing I have not been able to reconcile in my years of driving. If I drive leisurely, it confuses the heck out of other drivers and makes me more vulnerable to accidents. So they think of getting that extra space, extra speed, extra time by virtue of my relaxed driving.

Indeed! I have put myself in harms way by not honking- the presence of honking is a substitute for rear view mirrors. I also marvel at all the drivers on road who have this sound filter to know which honks are directed at them vs the cacophony of all the other honking.


Driving straight when one can zig-zag is extremely confusing for tailgating folks making them nervous and wanting to overtake me as soon as possible. That puts me in more dangerous situation than if I drive recklessly maintaining the existing road discipline!

I absolutely believe in honking for information. Just let people know you there.

What is wrong is honking in anger, retribution, etc. If the guy is already crossing dangerously in front of us, and is going to make it, without, or often with, our help, what is the point of honking? It won't change anything.

This is what I am trying to tell myself! I gave up the shouting; now I have to give up the honking. I'm working on it!

:uncontrol I agree with you...a relaxed driving style does confuse other drivers. We're the only relaxed drivers amid a frenzied sea after all.

I guess we'd need to look at honking through the eyes of a collective culture's perspective. As resident funny member One says, the responsibility for safety is shifted to us car drivers in India, so in this culture we've got to lean on the horn always. And if I hadn't honked yesterday, the rider would have braked completely to a stop right in front of me (while I was in the fast lane of the Bangalore highway) and I would have run him over.

If we cut to a different spot in the globe, I noticed that in Connecticut (where I lived for 4.5 years), a single honk on the road meant that everyone would drop what they were doing and look out for something that had gone wrong. Typically honks were reserved to warn erring drivers/pedestrians, when life/limb/property was at risk.

Man! I honk when I start the car to awaken the sleeping dogs and cats. Honk when I reverse out of parking to people who are unaware that they are right behind the car that has turned on.

Honk when taking a turn. Honk when entering a lane, when driving beside a biker and auto.

Then I honk when overtaking, and when being overtaken too closely, when the car in front of me is rolling back, when I am keeping space between vehicle in the front and someone sees it as an opportunity.

I used to be strong advocate against honking, and now I honk away all the way to glory. It's as if my hands have a mind of their own.

The days when I DON'T honk, I've seen people literally touch the bonnet of my car to stop it when crossing the road as if they possess a superpower. Ladies not giving a damn about crossing when the vehicle is near. Men on cycles and bikes cutting across.

A continuous horn is the only way to deter them for some reason. It's the same car at same speed! But honking makes it seem dangerous to them.

Do I hate myself for doing this? Yes! Is their other way out? Yes, to not honk but completely lose my sanity. rl:

Sure. I honk to make sure that my cats are not under the car, even if I have just seen them.

Every instance you mention is, to me, a valid instance of letting people know that you are there. I believe that even a quick, "polite" honk is a reasonable way to request someone to move out of the way.

You haven't mentioned the "retaliatory" honks. The ones that say, "You, sir are a moron for doing that!" etc etc. Those are the ones I'm trying to give up :)
