The stretch to Chitkul/Sangla was washed out in June, not sure if it has been fixed yet,a few of my acquaintances were there when this happened and they had to leave their vehicles there when this happened. With rains in full swing, check weather forecast before venturing out in that unstable region.

Will have to do the trip via Dehradun. A cousin will be joining us from there. Which route from Dehradun to theog/Rampur onto NH 22 would be safer?

I would recommend the latter route.

Charkrata-Hatkoiti-Theog is a big no no IMO. It is highly isolated and depleted in condition and is not preferred except by anyone except the villages en-route.

Dehradun-Poanta-Nahan-Solan is much safer and easier.

If i may advice it would be even better if you follow Dehradun-Poanta-Nahan-Chandigarh-Solan route, the reason being that the Nahan-Solan road is being repaired and is dug up for repair in a few stretches and not in the best condition.

I do not think the authorities have any plans to complete the repairs before the monsoons are over. Even though it would increase the distance by around 80kms(?) , the travel time should be almost same but journey much more comfortable.

Thanks again Mobius_1.

So it is going to be Dehradun-Poanta-Nahan-Panchkula-Solan-Sangla (Dist 492 Kms).

Re: Need Advice: 4 days, Sangla-Chitkul from Delhi

Hi team, I am planning the for the same trip at the end of March, 14. Below is the tentative itinerary:

21-Mar: 5:00 PM , Leave Gurgaon for Shimla.
22-Mar: Shimla kufri-Rampur-Sangla-Chitkul
23-Mar: Chitkul.
24-Mar: Chitkul-Chail
25-Mar: Chail-New Delhi.

Please advice me whether, it is doable as per the above mentioned plan and what would be the road conditions by then.

Its doable. Roads are a mess around Karcham and beyond Jeori. Apart from that the conditions are ok but melting snow will bring out the real picture.

You look all set to spend 80% of the day behind the wheel.
If this is a vacation - IMHO - you are well on your way to a burnout.
If this is for work , - IMHO - slow down...

BTW - Chitkul will be snow-bound at that time of year, and not being season yet, finding decent accomodation could be an issue.

Re: Need Advice: 4 days, Sangla-Chitkul from Delhi

Dear All,

I am planning a to Chitkul during first week of Oct. I have 5 days in hand. I tried this during August ( this month) but due to some personal reasons I could not do it.
Could you please tell me how will be the weather that time and the objective is not to be on the road but to enjoy the beauty, so please suggest an itinerary. Want to cover Sangala valley and Chitkul and is possible Kalpa.

October should be good weather-wise in the valley. Besides, in all likelihood the roads would be repaired by then.

In terms of an itinerary:
Day 1-Delhi-Fagu. You should leave early - before 6 AM preferably as the Delhi Ambala highway has quite heavy traffic , and you can avoid some of that if you start early. Don't miss the famous dhabas en-route to Ambala for breakfast - they would be coming up in about 2 hours+ after you leave Delhi behind you. Don't stop at Shimla - rather bypass it to reach Fagu.

Day 2 - Fagu - Sangla or Fagu - Chitkul. Overnight at Sangla or Chitkul.
At Rakchham - take a left to Sangla (road on right goes to Chitkul).

Day 3- a) If staying at Chitkul - just enjoy the day walking on the meadows
or
b) make a day-trip to see the monastery and Kinnaur Kailash at Recong Peo.
or
c) you can make a day trip out to Nako Lake.

Day 4- Start early from Sangla/Chitkul to reach Fagu by end of day. You can break for lunch at Narkanda. Visit the Hatu Mandir. Great views from there.

Day 5 - Fagu-Delhi - break for lunch at Chandigarh

Dear Joybhowmik,

Thank you for your response. This time again the choice of betterhalf overruled everything. This trip is again postponed for future. We have finalized trip to Matheran in Maharastra.
Booked the flight tickets.

Planning to go to Sarahan, Rakcham, Sangla, Kalpa & Chitkul starting 28th or 29th Dec. Is it advisable?
