Riju, thanx for the info. Whats the total distance involved?
We plan on starting out from Bangalore by around 5AM. So, i guess we should be fine.

The Hunsur-Periyapatna-Kushalnagar-Madikeri route is doable (as of June) - the roadwork had been progressing at an amazing pace.
It should take 4.5-5 hours at most- once did it in 4 with a 15 minute tea break but I'd started at 4:30am.
No clue about the Virajpet route.
If you're considering the Holenarsipur route - prepare yourself for some narrow broken tarmac part of the way - but the last stretch from a little before Somwarapet to Madikeri is oh-so-totally worth the earlier pain. Green, unending curves and lovely coffee estates all along.

Anytime bro'. Less than 250kms for sure if its KushalNagar.

Hunsur-P.patna-Bylakuppe road is done, but for short stretches. It is good quality but no lane markings or center median etc. After Bylakuppe towards Madikeri is horrible, total of about 40km. This wont be done that quickly. Most likely to complete by next monsoon , if not later.

Progress of the road is not all that fast but the quality is good. They are digging up / piling soil almost 6 feet at places and laying roads at considerable difference in height compared to existing alignment.

Benny, did the trip recently...You can try the Kushalnagar route as well...most of it fine except after Piriyapatna, but quite motorable...we did it 2 weeks back, read my travelogue...Now coming to directions...

Start at 5AM on Saturday (I found Mysore road with very heavy car traffic at 6AM)
After Srirangapatnam, turnright (dont go till the ring road), there is a right turn for Brindavan Garden, Ranganathitthu Bird Sanctuary, take it...in another 18km on that road you will reach the Hunsur road, it is shorter and also nice...
On Hunsur road you will hit the 4 laned newly constructed roads....although smooth but dont cross 80kmph since you are driving for the first time, there are sudden humps made by villagers, enjoy your drive...

Abhi

Periyapatna - Siddhapura - Kushalnagara is also a good route and very scenic. It would be longer, but the roads were good last month. There were very few 'bad' stretches.

Updates as of 30th September..

Went to Coorg on 30th. Volvo from Bangalore to Madikeri
Route taken: Bangalore-Srirangapatnam-Hunsur-Piriyapatna-Kushalnagar-Madikeri
Time taken : 5hrs 20min! Left at 7:15am, arrived at 12:35pm, includes a 20min stop
Route conditions: Good till Srirangapatnam, from where we left the mysore highway. Mix of good and bad till Hunsur, from where the roads turn bad as you approach Madikeri. The last few km before Madikeri has slow moving traffic coz of narrow roads and heavy trucks

On way back, took the 9am Rajhamsa.
Route taken: Madikeri-Kushalnagar-Piriyapatna-Mysore-Bangalore
Time taken : 6hrs 45min. Left at 9:05am, reached Bangalore at 3:50pm
Route conditions: Again bad till around Hunsur, good from there onwards.

Stayed at : Club Mahindra Resort.

Tip: The Madikeri tour isnt that good. Only the Abby falls and the view from Rajas seat are good. Skip the temple tour

Can someone give me current information on the Road Route from Chennai to Madikeri? As I see there are 2 Routes from Banglore to Madikeri

1. Bangalore--Mysore--Hunsur--Gonikoppal--Virajpet-- Madikeri
2. Bangalore--Mysore--Hunsur--Priyapatna--Kushalnagar--Suntikoppal--Madikeri

There is also another route to go to Madikeri directly from Mysore via Hosur without touching Blore as follows:

Hosur--Mattigiri--Mattigiri--Anekal--Anekal--Harohalli--Harohalli--Kanakapura--Kanakapura--Halaguru--Malavalli--Bannur--Malaimahadeswarahill--Mysore--Elivala--Krishnaraja Nagara--Bettadapur--Kushalnagar--Kushalnagar--Suntikoppa--Madikeri

Senior BHPians and fellow BHPians, please guide on the above route....

I am planning to go there in Dec ( post Christmas) alongwith 4 friends on a Scorpio.

Please guide on some hotels to stay in Madikeri ( even outskirts) as well as in Mysore Road where we are planning to stay the night before driving to Madikeri next day morning.....please: help

The best route from Bangalore would be Bangalore->Srirangapatna(Take right from here towards Ranganthittu. This joins the Mysore-Hunsur road at a place called Elwala. Saves around 15KM and also avoids the need to go via Mysore)->Hunsur->Piriyapatna->Kushalnagar->Madikeri. The road is fabulous till Kushalnagar. Just watch out for the mud humps placed by villagers. Kushalnagar to Madikeri is ok but wouldn't be a problem for a Scorpio.

The route via Hunsur->Gonikoppal->Virajpet->Madikeri is longer but more scenic. However, the roads around Gonikoppal and Virajpet aren't great. But as I mentioned will not be a problem for a Scorpio.

Avoid going through Kanakapura->Malavalli. It is one big mess and there are no roads worth their name. Just big stones, rocks and potholes. If you feel confident then you can take a Scorpio but a normal car gets hit severely in the underbody.

If coming from Hosur side, take the NICE road from Hosur road to Kanakapura Road and then from Kanakapura Road to Mysore Road. Saves you the pain of going through South Bangalore traffic. However, be very careful at the entry and exit points of the Hosur Road-Kanakapura Road NICE road as it is in a deplorable condition.

I haven't stayed much in Madikeri, but the Club Mahindra Resort is fabulous. You can search the forums or other members would be able to comment on other accomodation in and around Madikeri. Hope this helps.

Whats the best route from Kottayam? via Kannur-Iritty..?

Edit:

Anyone travelling to Madikeri from Bangalore, pls do avoid the Hole Narsipur Road, its horrible. Guaranteed route for bent rims and suspension rods.
Avoid Bettadapura also.

Go through Mysore-Hunsur-Periyapatna-Kushalnagar. The old road was dug up, just like Bangalore Mysore road, and good depth of gravel foundation.
You can do 60-80kmph easily.

Guys it's a sudden plan.
I'll be driving to Coorg tomorrow.
Can anybody let me know what is the best route from Bangalore to Madikeri?

Thanks to the forum members for giving very precise directions from bangalore to madikeri .
We reached Bangalore in the morning of 22nd May from pune & went to AutoRider's office at old airport road.
They gave me a Santro , without power steering , which had run 75000 Km. The pickup of the car as welll as AC was excellent. But in the first / reverse gear the steering was like that of tractor. The steering used to vibrate like anyhthing whenever the speed was more than 100 km/hr.
Otherwise the car was good & gave no trouble through out 8 days.
The tips from forum members about bypassing Mysore via Rangan Thittu etc were very very helpful.
The roads till Kushal Nagar are excellent.

How are these roads condition-
1) hunsur - gonikoppal - siddapur - injalkeri-madikeri
2) hunsur - gonikoppal - periyambady - virajpet - kakkabe -madikeri
3) hunsur - gonikoppal - siddapur - valnoor -dubare -guddehosur -madikeri

Additionally,
Gonikoppal - hudikeri -irpu falls - Nagarahole
Nagarahole - kutta - kabini -hampapura- mysore
Madikeri - gullibedu - subramanya.

Hunsur to Gonikoppal is not that good its average.

Hunsur - Nagarahole - kutta is really nice. except for some small bad patch near hunsur city. Remember this Nagarhole has some time restriction. 6AM - 6PM.
