Re: Bhopal to Delhi : Route Queries

I drove down from Gurgaon to Bhopal over the weekend, so thought an update here would probably be useful for folks planning on doing a similar trip.

The route I followed is:

Gurgaon > Manesar > Palwal > Mathura > Agra > Gwalior > Shivpuri > Guna > Biaora > Bhopal

The roads, overall, were GOOD. There were occasional diversions and small bad patches but they were few and far between. Most of the entire stretch comprises of good quality expressways/highways. The drive after Shivpuri was especially good – to my pleasant surprise, I must admit.

There are a few things to keep in mind though:
  • The trip could be quite taxing if done without a night halt. We left Gurgaon around 5:45 AM and reached Bhopal at 8:15 PM the same day, making it a total of 14 hours and 30 minutes of driving. Even though most of the drive was on good highways and we stopped a few times for short breaks, we were quite tired by the time we reached Bhopal.
  • If you have to do the trip in a single day, try to travel with someone who can share driving duties, especially if you haven’t done a 14-hour drive by yourself in the past. I travelled with my dad and the fact that we could take turns driving was immensely helpful.
  • DO NOT enter Gwalior, take the bypass instead. We somehow missed it and ended up spending 30 minutes driving through what looked like the most narrow and congested road in the country. (Okay, it wasn’t so bad but wasn’t exactly highway cruising either.)
  • If you are leaving from Gurgaon then driving till Manesar and then getting on to the KMP expressway (or Western Peripheral Expressway) till Palwal is a good option. At Palwal, simply join the original Delhi-Agra highway (NH19).
  • Except for KMP expressway, FasTag was accepted at all toll booths. In fact, those who didn’t have FasTag were being charged twice the toll amount. The FasTag systems/algorithms have clearly been updated as passing through most toll booths is now a breeze – unless you have to wait for the guy in front to stop arguing over why they have to pay twice the toll amount.
  • You will come upon trucks moving slowly in the fast lane and inevitably end up overtaking them from the left. As many parts of the route are four-laned (meaning two lanes on each side) you will need to be very careful while doing so as there will be many bravehearts driving on the wrong side of the road.

Thanks for the update @c_trivedi. It is extremely helpful.

Just had a couple of specific questions:
  • Is 4/6 lane work on AB road fully complete between GWL & Biaora..??
  • How is the road condition between Biaora and Bhopal? Last time I heard it was not that great due to road work.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Bhopal to Delhi : Route Queries

You're welcome, @ApriliaNut. Happy to help.

Answers to your questions below (trying my best to remember here!):

Is 4/6 lane work on AB road fully complete between GWL & Biaora..??

More or less, yes. After Gwalior, I remember the roads being pretty good throughout. There were occasional diversions, of course, but mostly the roads were 4/6 laned. I remember driving through Guna - as we wanted to get advise from the Police there on which route is the best and safest to reach Bhopal (i.e. choosing between going via Biaora or Sironj) - and even the city road was pretty wide. My dad told me that used to be the original AB road, which is why it was wider than most city roads. Now, thankfully, the authorities have built bypasses around all major towns.

How is the road condition between Biaora and Bhopal? Last time I heard it was not that great due to road work.

Again - pretty good! There were a few diversions where flyovers were being constructed but 95% of this stretch was butter smooth.

Delhi-DME-Lalsot-Jaipur bypass-Kota-Biaora-Bhopal

Aklera-Biaora alone is wide 2-laned. Rest is good 4-lane

Hi, I ended up taking the Kota route, did not go via Gwalior.
Delhi - DME - Sawai Madhopur exit - Hindoli - Kota Bypass - Biaora - Bhopal.

Sawai Madhopur to Hindoli is 2 lane, but good road surface.
Between Kota & Suket, there is a short ghat-ish section through the Mukundara Hills Tiger Reserve, and some more 2 lane roads on either ends of this reserve. Again, the road quality is fine, no issues.

Rest is all good, free flowing 4 lanes. Driving time was between 10.5 to 11 hours.
