Narayan - I am surprised as I thought I was the one of the few who used this route to reach Coimbatore in 90s and early 2000s. It was about 530 km vs 500 km in the usual Ulundurpet -> Atur - Salem route.
You could have sumptuous lunch in Ambur.

I don't know if anyone noticed this - that the total distance has shrunk in many places. Originally the first route came to about 570 km and the second route at that time was 540 km. May be because of several bypasses on the way reduced the total distance.

Thanks for the suggestion! especially about fengal, it didn't even cross my mind, thanks for pointing that out!!
If i start early, i will try to explore these options else will stick to the original route.

Harur to Salem is in shambles, better to avoid it. While some stretches between Tindivanam to Uthangarai may have issues, it is still OK. But the pain of Harur to Salem will make you repent this choice.

Appreciate the heads-up! i went through the same stretch a few months back, it was quite horrible due to ongoing road work. I was hoping there might have some improvements, which is why i wanted to check here!

This weekend, traveled to Coimbatore via the regular route. Below are the few observation, though the trip was uneventful for most part:

1. The road condition from Perungalathur till Maduranthagam has significantly deteriorated and there were numerous potholes and an uneven surface, due to recent rains i guess

2. There was a half-kilometer traffic jam near Palar bridge which is not unusual now a days. But to make matters worse, several vehicles were driving on the wrong side of the road coming from Mamandur side creating more chaos and posing danger to ongoing vehicles.
