Yes, Yercaud is more suitable for an idle holiday. If you have nothing to do in Salem during those two days, Yercaud would be a better place to kill that time. In any case, Yercaud offers enough for you to experience in one day.

The route to Yercaud from Salem is very straightforward. Just follow the signboards or ask anyone on the streets.

Idling away ....@ Yercaud

Thanx RJStyles & PJay.....

Going by your views, my Yercaud trip will be a fruitful one.

I needed some time in isolation amidst lushh greenery, esp since am headed for an 'In-laws' wedding in Salem..

So its a perfect setting then.....

Cheers

Am slated to be in Salem for a family wedding in the last week of Jan.

Is this a good time for a Yercaud trip with family and anyone can help me with directions, please. Salem - Yercaud - Salem. Approx 2 days can be spared for this trip exclusively.

The vehicle will be a self Indica Turbo.

Your views on this terrain and the precautions that need to be adhered to, will certainly help.

Cheers

Route updates,guys.
We'd be driving from chennai to yercaud. And we would be able to choose between krishnagiri and tindivanam based on road conditions purely.
Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure whether this would be helpful for you or not.
I did chennai yercaud chennai trip and returned yesterday.

I took chennai - vaniyambadi - tirupathur - harur - Yercaud route.

Upto vaniyambadi - no need to say.
From vaniyambadi to tirupathur - Bad to ok.
You can only do 60 Kmph.
After tirupathur road is bad to worse till uthangarai.
But absolutely no traffic.

From uthangarai, road is really good. Again no traffic with excellent road.

You need not touch salem to go to yercaud if you go by this route.

Before ayodhiyapattinam watch out for a road sign to divert to yercaud.
This road is little risky in the sense that the roads are very narrow and giving way to oncoming vehicle is bit difficult. Though you would not encounter such a situation very often in this road but even one or two times are enough to make you feel that you've taken a bad route.
I had to do this only once throughout the 30KMs journey.

Result, I saved atleast 20KMs.

IMO, I would go directly to krishnagiri-salem-yercaud

Chennai to Krishnagiri max 4 hours (Awesome road) take a left the 4 lane highway is completed till Salem--Again a Awesome Road

Note: Please take care of the 2 huge Humps in Thopur forest area (I banged on it once)

Bon Voyage !!

+1 to it, its better to go via Krishnagir - Thoppur since 4 laning is done almost upto Salem. Getting into Salem and getting onto Yercaud road is also not so difficult when you come from that side.

i had just been to yercaud last month
See my red rose linea thread
Please dont take the dindivanam route after ulundurpet the road is horrible. When i came down i took the krishnagiri route. It was fabulous and was able to touch 170kmph in my linea. The four laning is complete.and it took me only 5 hours to come back from yercaud to chennai.so please go in that route

Last week, while discussing with a bus driver, which was scheduled to Coimbatore, came to know that there is a shorter route which will take you to Thoppur without going via Krishnagiri. Vaguely remember as if I read somewhere in our forum that we need to take left before Yelagiri turn.. someone please clarify

The (in)famous Thoppur bumps..photo

Since few bhp-ians have cautioned thro their post and PM,iam adding the photographs of the same.Taken with mobile phone .The 2nd and 3rd image are added with 'soft focus' to highlight the bump. In the Third there is an internal reflection of the car's interior -typical beige issue . That is not part of the bump.

Planning Yercaud sometime soon. How's this route:

Chennai -> Tindivanam -> Tiruvannamalai -> Uthangarai -> Harur -> Yercaud route?

Is this a good idea?

Which is the best place to stay i.e reasonable and at the same time gives a resort feel?

@Raju - Why not take NH4? The usual Krishnagiri-Salem & enjoy the trouble free national highway instead of Tindivanam-Harur state highway?
