Read this news item today. Did anyone travel recently on this new toll road?

Is this now the preferred road to go to Trichy from Bangalore?

I dont know the toll amount (will find out next time), but really it is a very good option if you want to reach the Trichy city early.

If you want to reach Srirangam/Thiruvanaikovil/Samayapuram/Lalgudi etc (I mean, the other side of Trichy city twds Chennai), you can take Salem-BudhanSanthai-Kannanur-Pagalvadi-Mannachanallur-Trichy route which would give you an option to bypass Namakkal completely.

I also remember Gajadonga talking about it. How do you go from Santhamangalam to Kannanur bypassing Namakkal?

Is this what you take? Route Link

Thanks @nfs. I have read excellent updates from you, Ravi and @gajadonga about all the Trichy road updates. This sets the options very clear for people driving up to different parts of Trichy and beyond.

On the Karur road: Many mentioned the last section was still bad, as one approaches Trichy. Is it worth taking now, when the target is the city?

The road works are done all the way upto Trichy and the entire stretch (Karur-Trichy) is very good. So no worries there

Thanks for the update. So users have the option of either going via Thruraiyur road/Musiri or via NH67 depending on the destination in Trichy. Well in the latter, one more toll amount to shell out.

re: Bangalore to Trichy : Route Queries

Last week I took Trichy - Musiri - Namakkal - Bangalore route. Overall roads are good except 1-2 km stretch around Thottiyam.
I have updated the details in this thread.

I see from Google maps that the 4-laning work ends much before Lalapettai (way point B in the google maps link above) and the last 63 kms to Trichy is just 2 lane. I hope the Google maps image is outdated. Could someone confirm that Karur-Trichy is completely 4-laned?

The route through Karur bye pass is roughly 35-43 kms longer than the Kulithalai or the Musiri or the Thuraiyur routes. I am thinking of trying this route for my weekend drive to Trichy if it is completely 4-laned.

Karur-Trichy I am NOT sure is 4-laned. I think its a wide 2-lane.

The only view point is since you drive only to Trichy it may be worth a try. But if you are going beyond, this route does not lead to outskirts directly. You have to drive your way through the city which is a big pain. On the other had Musiri/Thuraiyur option leads you directly to toll gate from where you access the bypass with ease.

Add to it, Thuraiyur road is one fabulous road to drive too. Very minimal traffic. The only downer there is crossing Namakkal. There is a bypass via Budhan-Santhai/Senthamangalam, but the truckers also know this route amazingly well. This whole bypass is infested with them. But for crossing Trichy withe as, I would any day pick the Thuraiyur road.

I too wish it is a 4-lane. But if it turns out to be a wide 2-lane, then I prefer the Thuraiyur route through Senthamangalam, i have done in the recent past and I love it.

The news articles refer to the work as "4-laning" or "two-four laning". However, I don't see any indications in the google maps for 4-laning work-in-progress in the last 63 kms of Karur to Trichy. If it is a "wide 2-lane", they better have a minimal toll.

Karur-Trichy is just wide 2 Lane road of very good quality. But is it worth doing the extra KMs compared to other routes? In my opinion, NO.
There is absolutely no problems with either Thuraiyur or Musiri or Kulithalai route.
You can pick your choice of route depending upon your time of travel and your destination.

For instance, if you are going to Srirangam, Samayapuram, Tanjore - then take Musiri or Thuraiyur route. If you are going to Trichy city, then Kulithalai route would be your best bet.

Exactly my point. Hitting right into the middle of the city via NH67 does not make sense in case one needs to cross Trichy. Also earlier I was of opinion NH45 bypass also runs through the city for some distance. But I found the GQ to be quite good in going past the city for Madurai/Dindigul. I drove around Trichy a couple of weeks back and was quite impressed by the Thuraiyur section. At many places it looked like fresh tar!

re: Bangalore to Trichy : Route Queries

Mean while I saw an over bridge being constructed to connect SH22, right at the point where NH67 meets the Srirangam bridge.

Overbridge location

The map in the above link shows a detoured route. But if you zoom on to the location you can see a dashed bridge. That indicates the railway over bridge under construction. If that comes up then may be 67 can be directly used to drive till Srirangam bridge, exit before the bridge on to SH22 and drive till NH45. This might end up as a good bypass for 67.
