Chennai to Chandigarh - best route

Hi,

I read this forum with interest but would recommend highly based on my experience in driving from Chennai to Leh via Chandigarh.

My tips:

1. After a lot of research and discussions our conclusion was to take the GQ and not go via Hyderabad-Gwalior. Our experience was fantastic through the entire stretch of GQ until Delhi.

2. we did the Chennai - Chandigarh segment as follows:
i. Chennai - Bangalore on an afternoon to reach in the evening (to pick up another co-passenger/driver)
ii. Bangalore - Lonavala (halt)
iii. Lonavala -Udaipur (halt)
iv. Udaipur - Panipat (as we spent some time in Delhi and it was late)
v. Panipat - Chandigarh (but Udaipur to Chandigarh should be easy to do)

3. excepting for a 200km stretch through Chitradurga after Blore the roads were brilliant ensuring a safe drive.

4. The good part of it was Reliance A1 Plazas all the way from Bangalore right up to Delhi giving us consistent food quality and restrooms.

5. And finally driving in NE1 (Baroda-Ahmedabad) is an experience by itself.

6. My trip log file is available in the IndiaHighways Group at Yahoo- if you cant pick it up there, do let me know and I can send you the entire trip log. (is there way I can upload it here?)

7. And the pictures of the highway until Chandigarh are:

After going through the chain of reviews and plans provided by team, I am very much confused.

Route via Nagpur: Shortest but having lot of bad stretches

Route via Mumbai: Longest except few stretches the entire route is good

I am not worried about the distance that should be clocked extra. Considering the available 3.5 days pls suggest a route wherein I do not end up damage my car and searching for Maruit Service Station in the middle of route.

OT: Kumar, hope you put your travelogue after the trip. Non-stop long trips seems to be like having breakfast for you

To reach Hyderebad, which route should I follow. I seem to be having more than 3 options.

1. Chennai-Ongole-Pidiguralla-Narkatpally-Hyd

2. Chennai-Renigunta-Cuddapah-Kurnool-Hyd

3. Chennai-Chittoor-Cuddapah-Kurnool-Hyd

4. Chennai-Kadari-Kurnool-Hyd

I see the distance difference is over all works out to be 80~90Kms between the above mentioned routes.

However, to avoid killing time in the road, would prefer a good stretch to reach the distance safely. Please advise...

Options 2 or 3 are best. Avoid driving on Chitoor-Cudappah and Panyam-Kurnool at night.

In 2005 I drove from Chandigarh to Chennai on pretty much the same route..but it went like this.
Day One... Chandigarh to Surat Gujrat..1600 kms in 16 hours
Day two.. Surat to Bangalore... 1800 kms... same time.. wanted to go onto Chennai but had a flat that needed fixing.
Day Three.. Bangalore Chennai.. easy.. I dare say it can be done in 2 days.
