Chennai to Chandigarh

Dear All,

Further to my Chennai-Baroda trip, my business is pushing me to make a another big trip.

Chennai to Chandigarh

The trip is estimated to be in the month of Feb'2008. I will be in Mohali (SAS Nagar) for about a month, so I would like to have a car with me overthere. This is pushing me to take up this trip.

2 additional passengers would be travelling with me. But, I will be the single driver responsible to drive this distance.

I understand the distance is roughly 2400 Kms. I have 2.5 days to cross this distance.

I would request every one to guide me a appropriate route where the roads are OK.

Moreover, I would be making this trip with MyM800. I trying to get in touch with Maruiti Udyog to see any opportunity of sponsors for fuel or so. If any one knows the process, pls do help me on this.

Distance is more if you do the GQ route: Chennai - Mumbai - Delhi but faster and better roads (about 3000km)...

I think via Nagpur - Lakhandon route is shorter but road is bad and can kill the time. But I think if you plan well such that you are out of Hyd, Nagpur quickly, you can still consider that route.

Man, that would be some trip. If you take the GQ, it will take you more than 3 days to reach your destination assuming you drive for 12 hours at a stretch each day and cover 700kms. If you take the other route, add a few more days.

I suggest you either think of taking a different car or have a second driver or just take a flight and rent out a car there ( though it would be an expensive proposition)

BTW, why do you think so that MARUTI will sponsor the fuel for the trip?
Indian public know where MUL has reached today and what their cars are capable of

Had it been 10 years ago, they might have thought about it!

Taking the GQ and going through Mumbai would be a better option.

Like many have observed, the route via Bangalore and Bombay is preferable because of the better roads. The roads through MP are bad.

Tough to do this trip in 3 days (via Bombay, distance is 1,400 + 1,500 + 250, or over 3,000 kms). I have done Panipat-Trivandrum at breakneck pace in 3 days on the Sagar route (with only 1 night break), that is more than your proposed route), and I would think that you could plan it as follows:

via Bombay, 3,100 kms
1, Chennai-Bangalore-Belgaum
2, Belgaum-Pune-Bombay-Ahmedabad
3, Ahmedabad-Jaipur-Delhi
4, Delhi-Chandigarh

via Nagpur, 750+1,550+ 270 (2,500 kms)
1, Chennai-Hyderabad-Adilabad
2, Adilabad-Nagpur-Sagar
3, Sagar-Jhansi-Gwalior-Agra-Delhi
4, Delhi-Chandigarh

Obviously, distance via Hyderabad is shortest, and maybe given that the worst roads are Adilabad-Nagpur, Laknadon-Sagar, maybe it is worth taking this route since the savings in distance is quite a lot.

Also keep in mind that NH7 is also being widened, hence take the route via Chitoor, Cudappah, Panyam and Kurnool to Hyderabad.

Well, I am planning a non-stop drive from Bombay to Dalhousie - around 2,100 kms - starting at 2 pm on Dec 19, crossing Delhi by 9 am (my best time would have been 7 am, but the roads in South Gujarat are in a bad shape), and reaching Dalhousie by 7 pm (next day, 29 hours). Food will be served on board!! Eralier, on the old roads (2 lane Bombay-Delhi), I have done Bombay-Jalandhar in 30 hours (1,900 kms), so I am hoping to breach that time.

Thats one dangerous car.

Anyways, I once did BLR to Nagpur. Inspite of pushing the indica it was impossible to do it in a day, due to bad stretches.
Had to crawl because the underbody was very close to scraping the road in the craters.
You are in a 800, and the 800 suspension can't take as much abuse as the indica. Hit a pothole hard and you would need a new bushkit.
Now imaging 100s of kilometers of very bad roads.

I would say take the longer route. What good is a short route if you are struck with a bent rim.
Also the longer route does not have as many dacoit and law and order issues.

I agree, take the Nagpur route although road is bad. Probably you can try to push Sagar - Chandigarh directly in a long day. You can also target Nagpur if you start from Chennai at 3AM and plan your stops strategically (take NH205 and not Bangalore route to Hyd).

Consistent driving and only fuel and food breaks should see you through.
