I took this route last month on our way to Mahabalipuram. Google Maps suggested interior route to bypass Kanchipuram. Later Walajabad and Chengalpattu towns traffic caused an exhaustion and ate up a lot of time. The roads ranged between poor and OK'ish.

I thanked myself for choosing Mahabalipuram-Tindivanam bypass-Gingee-Tiruvannamalai-Tirupattur-Bargur route on our return. This route had much less traffic and the roads were fantastic throughout. Although the distance was more, found it less tiring.

Thanks to you and Ampere.
Hello - Can you please help me explain this route a little better ?

This is what we are referring to : Route Link

In other words :

- Drive till Sriperumbudur.
- Exit before the bypass and head straight to Orgadam.
- At the Oragadam turn to Vandalur
- At Vandalur cross the GST (grand southern trunk, Chennai/Trichi-NH45 ) and head to Kelambakkam and there on to Mahabalipuram via ECR

Hope that clarifies the whole thing.

Thanks a lot and it helps clarify the doubt which I had after bypassing NH48 towards Mahabalipuram.
I know the roads and traffic on NH 48 but not beyond, how are the roads, especially for a Sedan ?
Alternatively, a friend of referring me to use the Chittoor Road and join NH48. Any thoughts on this route ?

Additionally, if you can help with 2 more query
a) Mahabalipuram to Pondi route
b) Pondi to Bangalore route

Re: Alternative routes - Mahabalipuram to Bangalore

I don't see much activity in this thread, I do have a query.

Planning to travel from Bangalore to Mahabalipuram and in need of road condition information, if some one can guide me it will be very helpful.

I see three options mainly:
Option 1:

Google map suggested : Bangalore -- Kanchipuram bypass -- Walajabad -- Chengalpattu - Mahabalipuram (350 Km)

I see from the previous thread that most are opting for

Option 2:
Bangalore-- Drive all the way up to Sriperumbudur Bypass -- Vandalur -- Kelambakam -- ECR - Mahabalipuram (369Km) +20 km but Less or almost same time as first option.

Some also suggest :
Option 3:
Bangalore-- Drive all the way up to Sriperumbudur Bypass -- Vandalur -- Chengalpattu - Mahabalipuram (382Km) a bit more time + 20 min

Any body who has done a recent road trip can throw some light on road conditions. I prefer ease of driving even if its 20-30 km more than getting caught up in small town traffic.

Thanks.

Hello.

Had been to this area between Nov 18-24.

Onwards - took Route # 2

Return - took Route # 1

For Route # 2 - it's almost Chennai outskirts once you leave the highway at Sri Perumbudur.
Keep high vigil for local traffic, but nothing to worry.
Roads are good and you can easily maintain 40 to 60 kmph, with occasional sprints of 80 kmph

For Route # 1 - follow Google else there is no way you can trace this route because the standard Kanchipuram bypass route is under some sort of construction and not suggested by Google.

Basically, after Walajapet, you need to join the Kanchipuram Chennai road, and then branch on village roads. But roads are very good, although bit narrow at some places. Minimal traffic on these roads will ensure a smooth ride.

5 to 6 kms before Walajapet there are some broken roads, but manageable with 40 kmph. Keep a watch on dumper trucks on this route.

Img#1 - From my Google timeline, Chengalpattu is further down.

Img#2 - From my Google timeline (red arrow is the normal route via Kanchipuram bypass, which Google did not suggest as of Nov 24)

I did this trip in March and took Option 2.. roads are good thru-out, dont recollect any potholes and you can generally do 60-70 kmph. I used google maps to direct me and was a fuss-free experience. Once you hit Kelambakkam, it is the scenic 4 lane ECR till Mahabalipuram.

Re: Alternative routes - Mahabalipuram to Bangalore

Took route#2 for the recent Bangalore-Mahabalipuram trip. Roads are in good condition however the high number of trucks near Sriperumbudur slowed down the drive.

Took route#1 for the return trip. As @Safety_is_Param mentioned, Google Maps took us through village roads but cannot complain as we got to drive through some really nice green belt.

Re: Alternative routes - Mahabalipuram to Bangalore

Went to Mahaballipuram over the weekend for a day and took option 2 for both ways. I would say this was very breeze from Sriperumbudur to mahaballipuram. Some occasional pot holes in the SEZ area but can keep up good speeds.

Option 2:
Bangalore-- Drive all the way up to Sriperumbudur Bypass -- Vandalur -- Kelambakam -- ECR - Mahabalipuram (369Km) +20 km but Less or almost same time as first option.

Does entering Tamil Nadu or coming back to Karnataka require (1) RT - PCR if all passengers are fully vaccinated? (2) E pass - if so, how does one get the E pass for TN?

Apart from Ooty entry points where E-Pass and RT-PCT OR Double vaccination certifications are checked, there is no other check while entering TN.

Note: Bad weather and lots of rainfall predicted for coastal and parts of south TN for the next few days, please plan accordingly. More details on the TN weatherman FB page.

Re: Alternative routes - Mahabalipuram to Bangalore

Hi Team, I'm planning to drive from East Bangalore to Kovalam Beach which is 20 kms to the North of Mahabalipuram, close to Kelambakkam.

Going through this thread more of less suggests getting off NH 48 before the Sriperumbudur bypass, Oragadam, Vandalur, Kelambakkam.

Any updates on this route? or any other suggestions?
Thanks
