Alternative routes - Mahabalipuram to Bangalore

I have seen people on their trip to bglr-pondi-Mahab take the same route back to Bangalore, so did some evaluation on the alternative routes and their distances.

I have taken Hosur as the end-point instead of bangalore for simplicity.

This will only be suitable for people who want to cover Mahabs on their last day/ journey back from Pondi.

Mahabs -> Kancheepuram -> Vellore -> Krishnagiri -> Hosur

Distance: 306 Kms

Mahabs -> Melamaiyur -> Tindivanam -> Tiruvannamalai -> Krishnagiri -> Hosur

Distance : 324 Kms

Mahabs -> ECR Rd -> Acharapakkam-> Tindivanam -> Tiruvannamalai -> Krishnagiri -> Hosur

Distance : 330 Kms

Mahabs -> ECR Rd -> Pondi -> Tindivanam -> Tiruvannamalai -> Krishnagiri -> Hosur

Distance: 373 Kms

Now the question is, has anyone explored these/ covered them, mostly they are on NH, except for an arterial road to get onto the NH and ECR Rd.

Thanks to Map My India for the sources.

Isn't the first one (Mahabs -> Kancheepuram -> Vellore -> Krishnagiri -> Hosur) more straightforward and better? You get to be on the GQ pretty fast, and there you go. I don't know about Mahabs-Kancheepuram road conditions, but it has to be very bad if we are to rule out this route.

I have done these 2 routes. The latter route..other way round.
Trust me Route 1 is the best.
You spend abt 100/- on toll fee...but its worth every single penny.

Its difficult to decide which is smoother...ECR, or road bet kanchipuram & Hosur or a piece of vetrified tile!!

OT: How abt our next bangalore meet in mahabalipuram

Are you trying to say that the roads are well maintained between Mahabs & Kanchipuram !!!

This is good to know.

One Option:

From Mahabs you need to take the ECR towards Chennai for about 25 kms & then turn left to reach Sholinganallur on OMR (2 or 3 kms). -

ROADS EXCELLENT (25 KMS)
VERY BAD ROADS - ROAD EXPANSION IS IN PROGRESS FOR THE 2 OR 3 KMS

Turn Right on OMR and immediate left to travel down for another 4-5 kms to reach Velachery Main Road.-

PRETTY DECENT ROAD - 4 0R 5 KMS

Turn Left and travel another 12 kms to reach Tambaram.

EXCELLENT ROAD WITH BIT OF TRAFFIC - 12 KMS

Get to the opposite side of the GST road and turn left to Mudichur road.

DECENT ROADS-12KMS

At the fag end of that road (4 kms) take right to travel straight down to Kancheepuram via Padapai and Wallajabad to get into Bangalore highways (45 kms) -

PRETTY DECENT ROADS - 45 KMS

LEFT TURN TO KRISHNAGIRI

Approximate Travel time from Mahabs to reach Bangalore highways will be - 3 hrs

I couldnt trace that route ont he map since some of the roads you gave are not present in the mapping site.

But I think the first route using "Kancheepuram" is good since its short and not using the inner village roads.

I guess the below route should be taken for short and quick reach to destination.

Mahabs-Chengalpattu-Kancheepuram-Vellore-Krishnagiri-Hosur-Blr

Route from Mahabs-Chengalpattu-Kancheepuram is undivided and at some places it is damaged due to latest monsoon.

Route after Kancheepuram will be great and am sure you will enjoy driving this route.

Reaching Tambaram from Mahabs will take long time as you will have to pass thru heavy traffic and bad roads too. Instead Mahabs to Kancheepuram and the vellore will be better. You can safe 50-60 kms compared to the above route.

Route from Bangalore to Mahabalipuram

Hello Guys,
Can you please suggest me the route from Bangalore to Mahabalipuram?
Also post the rote condition if possible.

{As far as i know(from posts) above, the best route would be via Hosur-Krishnagiri-Vellore-Kancheepuram.}

The old equation still holds I guess. Go till Kanchipuram and then turn to Mahabalipuram. NH66 towards Tindivanam/TVMalai/Pondicherry is not all that great. Nh46 is way better.

Please refer to this post http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...tml#post911024

I too recently travelled on this stretch. It was a quite fast drive. You can do Mahabalipuram to Kancheepuram GQ in 1.5 hours (or less). You may have to ask for directions at Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram towns.

With NH66, what I meant is that, the road from Krishnagiri which leads to Pondicherry via TVMalai is not all that great, inspite of being a NH.

For Mahabalipuram, hence I would not advice that route. Instead take the NH46 from Krishnagiri which goes towards Chennai and branch off at Kanchi.
