If he's travelling with family & kids, your friend might want to keep in mind that even though the 2nd option is more scenic and shorter than the 1st, it can be quite secluded in some places en route.

No idea about current conditions, sorry!

Cheers,
Vikram

He has 2 routes in mind

1. Belgaum - Hubli - Karwar
Blindly take this for the route to Karwar.

On the way back he can try :

Karwar-Kadra-Anshi-Joida-Dandeli-Haliyal-Dharwad

Road are bad no no doubt, but on the way back it would be easier. He need'nt have to spot for the road at Dharwad. And also you dont want to take bad roads in the end to reach your destination (even at the cost of views).

Thanks Ampere! I did pass on the suggestions to him, he was also checking with hotels where he plans to spend the night (in Belgaum) and the hotel owner has told him that the roads have been repaired and buses are also plying on the same. He intends to take the route and enjoy the drive (prepared for rough roads)

p.s. He has seen your pics that you have posted a few years back between Anshi-Joida-Dandeli and would like to witness those.

Thanks a ton!

Those were quite old snaps; easily 8-10 year old! Amazing place... Brings back quite a lot of memories. Karwar in those times had almost no hotels to stay. Now many good ones have cropped up, as the place becomes more of a tourist hub. For Belgaum the place to stay is, Sankam.

Re: Query on NH218 : How good is the Bijapur-Hubli-Karwar stretch?

Can someone please urgently update me on the latest condition of NH218 between Gulbarga and Bagalkot via Bijapur in terms of :

1) Road Condition (potholes, tarmac condition, speed breakers)?

2) Roadside facilities (fuel and food availability)?

3) Traffic Condition (heavy, moderate, sparse ; trucks, two wheelers)?

- Quite decent. I have heard good tarmac about this stretch.
- However low on facilities.
- Beyond Bagalkot, do you plan to take the route to Hubli or Belgaum. Belgaum is very good via Lokapur/Yergatti.

Re: Query on NH218 : How good is the Bijapur-Hubli-Karwar stretch?

Requesting an update on this route in an old thread - hope that is ok. Currently what is the best route from Bijapur to Karwar. Google maps suggests two routes 1. through Hubli/Dharwad and 2. thro' Belgaum. https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Bija...nataka,+India/

We are planning to break the journey overnight in either Dharwad or Belgaum. Thanks!

Best route is via Hubli.

Bijapur-Hubli-Yellapur-Ankola-Karwar. Fantastic roads all the way. (As far as I know, NH218 is very good all the way up to Hubli. Hubli-Ankola is a belter. And the Ankola-Karwar is also very good. You should be able to do it in 6-7 hours easily.

Thanks for the quick reply, Amp. That helps a lot!

Another question - which is best route Karwar to Bangalore?
1. Karwar - Ankola - Haveri - NH4 - Bangalore
2. Karwar - NH17 - Mangalore - Hassan - Bangalore
3. Karwar - Udupi - Agumbe - Shimoga - Bangalore -- not sure if this is a good option

Any pros and cons between these routes between Karwar and Bangalore?

Thanks!
