If you want the regular (time tested) route follow this :
B'bay - Nasik - Malegaon - Dhulia - Shirpur - Sendhwa - Dhamnod - Mhow - Indore.
Since four-laning on this stretch is in progress the road especially after the MP border starts is in pretty bad condition. You can take the longer (90 odd kms) route which is B'bay - Nasik - Malegaon - Dhulia - Jalgaon - Aidlabad - Burhanpur - Indore, this route is much better for you and your car IMHO. There are not much wayside dhaba's and eateries on the second route so stock your car well with water and snacks.

Madhokritesh

Thro NH-3 you'd do around 600 kms, even if you start early from Mumbai you'd cross Dhule around 2-3 and by the time you near Indore, it wouldl be sundown.

If you take the Dhule-Jalgaon-Burhanpur-Indore route, as mentioned by Wasava, it would be 90 kms + pushing the distance to 700, sure that after Jalgaon it would be evening; facilities are practically nil on this route.

This means you must start early, if possible really early around 3 am, you'd make good time till Nashik, every hour gained in starting early from Mumbai would ensure your drive time in the dark (taking winter into consideration) would get reduced considerably, reducing risk exposure in MP. I don't mean to be an agony aunt about risks in that stretch, just needs to have the safetys on; you'd have to take the Jalgaon-Burhanpur-Pandaha-Deshgaon-Sanawad-Barwaha-Indore route. Jalgaon till Barwaha would be desolate, but you'd have lots of truck traffic for company.

Did some research on this route as I have driven down from Indore to Barwaha-Omkarawwar last month, good roads but traffic heavy, which means you'd get slowed down plenty on your way up.

If you're driving down from Indore to Mumbai, then you can start around 5 am, you'd have no problem dirving in day time through this area hit Jalgaon-Dhule and from thereon to Mumbai. You're already there in Indore?

I am sure there would be other people chipping in with latest info.

Ritesh you'd be doing excellent speeds up until malegaon 'coz the four lane there is complete. I've been to nasik just last week so have been through the stretch.

From where to where is the 4 track complete, I have a friend driving down from Delhi to Mumbai, would like to touch Ujjain and is exploring an alternativei route to GQ.

Which route did you take? Can you plese mention approx. timings and distances, Indore-Jalgaon, Jalgaon -Dhule, Dhule-Melegaon.

Ramky I meant to say that he'd do good speeds on the B'bay to Malegaon stretch. I'd taken the normal route on my way to Nasik and the detour on the return drive. I suggest you advise your friend against driving through MP if it is avoidable. The road network is in shambles and with such a long drive he'll only end up with a bashed up car. Still I'll get back to you on the best possible route if he insists on visiting ujjain.

Flying from Mumbai to Indore - 6.25am (Kingfisher)
Arr Indore Airport - 7.30am

Distance Chart on NH3 is as follows:

Indore-Mhow 20-Ghat Road-Damnod 57-Kalghat 7-Sendhwa 68-Shirpur 52-Dhulia 50-Malegaon 62-Chandvad 41-Pimpalgaon 34-Nashik 30-Igatpuri 48-Kasara 16-Shahpur 32-Thane 50-Bombay Chembur 20

There are some ghat roads after Mhow, Dhulia and Igatpuri.
Traffic is high, mostly long-distance truck traffic.
Bigger towns are Shirpur, Dhulia, Malegaon and nasik.
You will bypass all the towns en route once you cross into Maharashtra.
Facilities are decent.

Re: Indore to Mumbai Route Help Needed

I would be traveling from Thane (Mumbai) to Indore soon.

While going to Indore, I will go via Alirajpur - I have some work there.

While returning from Indore, I will come directly from Indore to Thane.

I need some help with these:

a) How much time would I need for Thane - Alirajpur ?
b) How much time would I need for Alirajpur - Indore ?
c) How much time would I need for Indore - Thane ?

What is the condition of roads on these stretches and any tips.

I have got Wagon R LXi CNG.

Also it would be very nice if someone can help me with CNG outlets around the route.

Thanks

Ravi

12-14 hours for Thane-Alirajpur.

3-4 hours for Alirajpur-Indore. Till you reach NH3 near Dhamnod, road is narrow, but traffic is not much.

Indore-Thane should take you 10-12 hours, not counting halts en route.

Re: Indore to Mumbai Route Help Needed

From Alirajpur take the following route

Alirajpur-Badwani-Thikri-Kalghat-Indore.

At Kalghat you will get the 4 laned AB road to Indore.
