Hi,
One of my friends is planning to drive from Chennai to Mumbai. Please take a look at his plan and his queries I have posted below.

I am planning to leave from Chennai for Bombay around 5.30 a.m. on Saturday the 13th December. I have the following questions.
1. What route to take from Chennai to Bombay
2. Since the total distance is around 1300 kms I intend to do it over two days and would be fine if I reach Bombay on the 14th evening. Hence would need to know
a. A place that I can have breakfast, lunch and dinner both on Saturday and Sunday
b. A decent place where I can break on Saturday evening and start again on Sunday morning
It would be great if you can get me answers to these questions. Any other suggestions that would make my drive more comfortable is welcome.
Thanx
-V

PS: I searched the forum already and found only:

but this is a couple of months old. Would request anyone having done a more recent journey to provide their inputs.

Sushil, try separate searches for Chennai - Bangalore and Bangalore - Mumbai, you'll be surprised at the number of results.

If he can start on Friday evening, he can reach Bangalore by Friday night and reach Bombay on Saturday night.

Route is pretty simple:

Get onto the GQ and just keep heading down the same till you hit Mumbai !!! :-)

Koyambedu - Poonamallee is the starting point. Then its Vellore - Krishnagiri - Bangalore - Neelamangala - Tumkur - Chitradurga - Haveri - Hubli - Dharwad - Pune - Mumbai

Its supposed to be 4 laned all the way but certain sections like Tumkur Bypass, chitradurga bypass are still under implementation.

This link should give the current status.

Welcome to NHAI

I'm not sure how fast your friend drives or what car he has, so at an average

Morning breakfast around 9ish would be Adyar Ananda Bhavan 20 kms past Krishnagiri
Afternoon - Tumkur (430 kms+) or
Night - Hubli (740kms+) Belgaum (825kms+) might be too far off....

Bangalore is the bottleneck as he'll probably hit Bangalore around 9.30 - 10.00 if he leaves around 5.30 am. Though it is a Saturday there would be traffic but should be managable. If he knows Bangalore the quickest way to hit the other end of town is through the city, or he has to take the ORR to reach Peenya.

Next day should be easier. Pune is 350 kms or so from Belgaum.

Thanks hrag & csentil. My friend is a fairly moderate speed driver and drives a Opel Corsa (7 year old). Any reccomendations on place to stay overnight ?

BTW: Hrag : this guy V is from our company. He is to deliver the Corsa to a close relative. Anyone seen the movie Vanishing Point ? Sound similar ? :-)

I just searched the route(straight) in google earth .no way is there any need to touch bengalooru to reach bombay from madras.
I hope there may be routs that exists

@deepclutch : I know there are flights available ...but he has to drive the car to drop it off. :-) .

deepclutch, that is some amazing information - how long do you think this straight route would take?

Edit: through this route, he will be forced to drop the car.

As stated by others GQ is the best option and follow this thread for updates on the NH4 (GQ) from Bangalore to Mumbai

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route-...-roadtrip.html

There were a couple of guys who had done this stretch in the recent past 15 days and you can find out about the same from them, hoping that the Chennai- Bangalore GQ stretch should not be a problem for you.

HAHA! I just shared a guideline :D .

I recently did Bangalore-Pune. The outskirts of Bangalore is still in shambles - road widening work going on. After that its smooth sailing till Chitradurga from where the bad stretch starts, all the way to Haveri! Lot of diversions, two railway crossings and single lane roads.
But Haveri to Mumbai is a dream (app 660km). You can easily avg 75-80km/h all the way till Mumbai.

The best option for your friend is to take the right at Attibelle get onto Sarjapur road, from there go until the ORR. From there go until Hebbal. Take the right at Hebbal until Yelahanka. From Yelahanka you go to Doddabllapur, Dobbspet. At Dobbspet you would hit the NH4 which would allow you to escape the Electronic City traffic and the pain between Peenya and Nelamangala. This is what I did when I returned from Mahableshwar to Chennai a couple of months back

If you reach Bangalore in the day, it is easier and faster to go through the city. Would NICE road be nicer? Except for Bannerughatta Road, of course?

NICE road will definitely be nicer. But he will have to take it from Kanakpura Road. Bannerghatta stretch is horrible.

Correct and he will find no one in the night in NICE road from Hosur Road to ask for direcions out of the mess.
My take will be to take the Attibele route and move out of Bangalore ASAP.

Thanks akroy,vikram_d,hrag,pypkmsrikanth,BunnyPunia & csentil for your inputs. V is following this post and is very appreciative of your valuable inputs.
