Return trip I took route from Varca - Kharepatan - Anuskura Ghat - Satara - Nashik - Saputara - Vadodara, road conditions till Kharepatan were good but from Kharepatan to Anuskura ghat via SH114 roads are in very bad condition, after Anuskura ghat till Satara roads were in better condition but with lot of diversions on NH48.

I personally would prefer taking Amboli ghat for reaching Goa as roads are very smooth and well laid but crossing Kolhapur traffic has to be taken into account.

Avoid taking Kharepatan turn and rather go ahead till Oni. Then take Oni - Saundal - Anuskura. The roads are much better.

I just came back from Goa yesteday afternoon.

Did heavy reasearch on Team BHP for possible routes to drive to Goa.

Left on Saturday 4th January at around 7:30 AM from Wagholi, Pune.
Reaced Khed Shivapur toll plaza in an hour and a half.
Stopped at Hotel Kailash for a quick breakfast and drove non stop to Karad.

The roads while entering Karad are horrible due to the flyover constructions.
Made a lunch break at McDonalds, Karad, reaching there by 12:30 PM.

Post leaving McDonalds, went below the flyover and took a right and headed towards Kokrud and onwards to Malkapur.

Onwards to Anuskura Ghat and continued directly towards Oni and touched NH66 to Mumbai-Goa highway at around 3:30 PM with a couple of stops in between.

Drove on till Calungute on NH66 and might I saw, the roads were amazing. Suprisingly, there was absolutely no Traffic on the roads (and luckily toll booths are not active) so sped on the highway without delays.

While entering Goa, there is a flyover construction going on so Traffic there was horrible. Spent 45 minutes in the jam and finally reached Calungute at around 7 PM.

Return Leg:

I left Calungute at around 6 AM on Friday 10th Jan.
Took the same route as I came. I did not want to go via Kolhapur or any other diversions.

Reached my destination in Wagholi by 4:30 PM with multiple stops.

My suggestion is to drive on the above mentioned route. The only challange is Traffic in Karad, but apart from that, the roads till Goa are amazing.

I would suggest avoid driving at night time in Anuskura Ghat due to the bends and less visibility due to the dark.

Thanks to all the BHP'ians for suggesting this route.

Dear All,

I will be travelling to Mandrem Beach - North Goa and I have decided to go via Anuskura Ghat.

After crossing Kudal, GMaps is suggesting to exit NH66 at Malgaon. Is this route considered OK or should I continue on NH66 and exit near Pernem Raiway station.

Could anyone advise ?

Regards,
F150

I would advise to continue on NH66. Roads are excellent and very less traffic. You’ll cover more distance in less time

Just back from a ride to Mandrem Beach over the Republic Day weekend and took the turn off at Malgaon. No problem faced. Roads are winding and through a couple of pretty forested areas. The approx distance is 30km from the highway to Mandrem beach.

You can check out the roads from this video. See from 4.25 Min onwards

I am planning to travel to Goa Today. As I will be starting post lunch, I plan to halt midway , say Kolhapur tonight and take Nipani - Ajra - Amboli route tomorrow.

I know Karad-Anuskura-Oni has better road conditions but no night halt options on the way.

Any suggestions?

Any update on road conditions between Karad - Kolhapur - Nipani?

Please reply.

Karad - Kolhapur - Nipani section of NH48 has some diversions due to ongoing road work but nothing to be too worried about as you are taking night halt at Kolhapur which is a good option and the section of Nipani - Ajra - Amboli is freshly laid roads which are in very good condition so drive will be smooth.

I drove from Magarpatta, Pune to Mandrem last week via Anuskura ghat.

I covered both the routes. Onward journey, I went through the long route and exited NH66 near Satarda bridge. It was 20 kms longer but roads were wider

On the return journey, I took the route suggested by Akso. The roads were narrow for my comfort, but covered good distance because I started early morning from Goa.

Below are the stats for the journey excluding 30min stops each for breakfast & lunch

Onward - Breakfast at Hotel Sangam, Karad | Lunch at Hotel Aradhya on NH66
Return - Breakfast at Hotel Green Park, Rajapur NH66 | Lunch at Hotel Abhiruchi Park Inn, Satara.

I just completed Pune - Goa - Pune yesterday and wanted to share my quick observations.

I took Pune(Wakad) - Karad -Anushkura Ghat - Sawantwadi- Panjim - Palolem (South Goa) Route. I left at 4.30 am and reached my destination at around 3.15 PM with an overall travel time of 10.5 hours. Karad flyover was the only place of congestion and otherwise road is in pretty good shape. Kharepatan onwards till South Goa, the new Mumbai Goa highway was also very nice and all most complete.

While coming back, Google suggested to take South Goa Palolem - Mollem - Anmod- Bhimgad sanctuary - Khanapur - Belgaum - Kolhapur - Karad - Satara - Pune route. This was a MISTAKE. I would heavily recommend not to take this. I left a little late at around 12 PM and reached home at Wakad Pune at 1 PM with travel time of 12 hours.
Roads till bhimgad are good but then there is a massive blockade near khanapur due to Belgavi- Panjim highway construction.
Belgavi to Satara road is heavily under construction from 4 to 6 owning and should be avoided. Also, google would keep suggesting to take a detour once you are in the highway. Please take the Anushkura route if possible and only take this one if you plan to drive only during day.

Hello... I am traveling from Kolhapur to Tarkarli ( Malvan - Sindhudurg) next week by car.
Google Maps suggesting 2 routes
1 : Kolhapur - Nipani - Ajra - Amboli - Sawantwadi - Kudal - Tarkarli
2 : Kolhapur - Radhanagari- Phonda ghat - Kankavali - Tarkarli.
My confusion is I heard that Phondaghat road's condition is not that good as compared to Amboli ghat.
Plz suggest appropriate route.
Thank you

There are not too many options near Oni, However, as you near Kankavli there are some options. I have seen Hotel Pavhaner with good food reviews.

I traveled on this route in Dec 2024 last week along with my spouse. Had lunch here -- > https://maps.app.goo.gl/Hj4Ed2Y31sDzheGV8

Hotel Janata Dhaba & Family Restaurant. There were families having lunch which made us stop at this place.

Another recommendation --> Hotel Sai Nisarg, morevadi (https://maps.app.goo.gl/QBpYN8gMHmHXLL4v8). Stopped here for lunch while returning from Goa.

Both placed served excellent non veg food.

Route update:
Did a drive from Pune to Devbag, onward to Goa at the end of March 2025. Came back from Utorda, Goa to Pune on 4th April.
The new Thar Roxx did great.

Onward journey on 29/3/2025: Pune to Karad via NH48, then State highway via Anuskura Ghat, Malkapur, emerged on NH66 around Rajapur. Drove on NH66 till Kasal and diverted towards Devbag, MH. Took a halt for the night in Devbag. Drove to South Goa the next day via NH66. Road is great throughout, esp the state highway. Hardly any traffic on SH, so fast progress can be made.
Pune to Karad is not that great, some diversions. Although road surface is good in most places.
NH66 is good but the surface being concrete, is not very good. Ride is bumpy.

Return journey on 4/4/2025
Goa to Pune, I left around 9.30am from Utorda. I wanted to touch NH48 around lunch time, so decided to come via Amboli ghat, touch NH48 around Nippani and have lunch on NH48. Had I come via Anuskura ghat, I would have touched NH48 only around 4pm.
Drove from Utorda to Banda on NH66, then Sawantwadi, Amboli ghat, Ajara, Gandhinglaj, touched NH48 around 1.30pm.
Then followed a harrowing time with hundreds of diversions, from Gadhinglaj till Satara. It does not let you drive on the highway for more than a kilometer. Then a diversion of 1-2 km, again on highway for a km or so, and again diversion. This continued till Karad, after which, the diversion reduced.
I do not recommend to go on NH48 after Karad, since the diversions will kill your time, average speed, and energy.
Wildcard mention for road after Amboli ghat, via Ajara till Gadhinglaj: The road widening and resurfacing is recently done. Concrete road immediately after crossing Amboli ghat, all the way till Gadhinglaj. Even the surface of concrete is great here such that Thar Roxx didn't bounce much. I really enjoyed this part of the drive on the way back, the route is very scenic and road surface is great.

Overall recommendation: Take the Anuskara ghat route.
Pune to Karad via NH48 (till Narayanwadi, a little ahead of Karad), then divert on SH144 towards Malkapur, go via Anuskara ghat and touch NH66 around Rajapur. The State highways are great that side (road surface wise), and allow you to do Pune to Goa faster and more relaxed than staying on NH48 for longer.

Sneak peak of Thar Roxx taking a break in Amboli ghat.

Hello

I travelled from Pune - Kolhapur - Devbag / Malvan / Tarkarli in March.

Since we were leaving from Kolhapur I had two options to reach Tarkarli. One from Phondaghat Radhanagari and the other via Gaganbawda Ghat.

I decided to travel through Gaganbawda Ghat and to my surprise, the entire Gaganbawda Ghat was freshly made of concrete. Furthermore, the roads till NH 66 are in good condition. Those traveling from Kolhapur to Goa but want to avoid Kolhapur - Nipani - Amboli route can definitely take Gaganbawda Ghat.
