I checked with my colleague who has travelled, you should take

GGN- Rewari - Narnaul- continue on Highway 11 until Chirawa. This highway 11 is in good condition (Army use) and goes further to Bikaner and beyond.

https://www.google.co.in/maps/dir/CE...8163!3e0?hl=en

Per him, roads via Dadri/ Mahndergarh are not good.

Got it! Essentially the same route @amikacin was suggesting for Surajgarh.

Now, in case we decide to drive down to BITS Pilani instead of Surajgarh (still awaiting some finer details about the whole admission process), then I see Google suggesting 3 options:

1. GGN-Dhankot-Jhajjar-Chhuchhakwas-Charkhi Dadri-Loharu-BITS Pilani - the suggested route - 169 Kms
https://goo.gl/maps/PP2DfKSgizgZS4qx8

2. GGN-Bhiwadi-Rewari-Kanina-Mahendragarh-Satnali-Loharu-BITS Pilani - this is the longer one by 13 kms but seems to take just 20 mins more. This route is fundamentally the same route you suggested to Surajgarh - 182 Kms
https://goo.gl/maps/izCB9CNYxTdUcmRa6

3. GGN-Jhajjar-Dighal-Kalanaur-Devsar-Jui Khurd-Loharu-BIS Pilani - this is the longest route but same time as #2 - 206 Kms
https://goo.gl/maps/X2XUEYvdgHAcPM1Y6

What would you suggest given these options? The reason why I am a little wary is I will be in a rental car - had I been in my Yeti, I would have not much hesitation in taking on some rough patches!

Look forward!

Option 1 - Avoid that as per recent updates from Turbanator.

Option 2 - This is also a good option, last I used was a year ago, you have to cross a couple of cities which reduces your average speed and increases travel time. This is also the route by commonly used by taxies from Pilani for drop to Delhi airport. But I suggest to avoid this route after dark hours.

Option 3 - You may also try Ggn - Jajjhar - Rohtak bypass - Kalanaur - Bhiwani - Loharu - Pilani. This route is longer but the roads are good. Last I travelled was a week back and from Delhi, it took me three hours to reach Loharu with one bio-break (I started at 5 am though).

But the most commonly suggested option is Ggn - Rewari - Narnaul (Bypass) - Singhana - Chirawa - Pilani. Average travel time will be 4.5 hrs. I suggest you may continue with this option, roads are good for most part in this stretch, watch out for stray cattles though.

Thanks again! One doubt - the option with Rohtak Bypass that you mentioned - is this the exact same option/route as my Option 3 route or is there a deviation somewhere?

Cheers!

Re: Gurgaon-Pilani route queries

So, did the Delhi/Gurgaon-Pilani trip. But instead of driving a rental, I opted for a cab since my stay at Pilani was of an undefined period. Since it was a cab and starting point was Sector 80 in Gurgaon, the driver hit the Delhi-Jaipur highway, drove through Farrukh Nagar, Rewari, Chhuchhakwas, Loharu before entering Pilani. The roads were a mix of super smooth highways and a pathetic mixture of stone, gravel and craters - especially about 20 kms from Chhuchhakwas. Encountered a lot of dumper traffic in patches throughout. The non-highway roads were all single lane without any dividers. Just before hitting Loharu, there is a railway track crossing patch (a flyover is being built to bypass the tracks) that will give one a total off-roading experience! Total travel time was about 4.5 hrs with about 20 minutes spent by the cabbie in explaining at 3 toll booths as to why his cab Fastag isn't working!

The return was also through the same route with the difference that the last about 20 kms approach to Gurgaon was through a narrow (surprisingly better tarmac) road flanked by fields on either sides. I was hanging on for dear life through this patch - my cabbie as well as the oncoming traffic were driving as if each of them owned the road - slipping off the road while crossing each other. Left Pilani at 1pm and reached T2 at 5:20pm - with a short 20 mins break in between.

My next trip will either be in my own car through Route #3 or will take the much proven (and saner) Delhi-Loharu train route!

Thanks, folks for all the guidance here!

Cheers!

Wow! you really had an adventurous journey. There was a reason this route was not recommended and the taxi driver proved it well.

Am not sure if there was any actual saving in terms of distance through this route but you can not argue with the cabbie.

The return route that you mention is a single lane carriageway and I have often used it till last year but its a pain to navigate the traffic of Chhuchakwas crossing. Now with the Rewari - Narnaul highway in good shape, I would prefer that over anything else.

Hope you had good time around in the BITS campus, have lots of memories associated with that place.

Next time around, do ping for an update and we may be able to guide you better.
