yes. actually, it was better to drive in the night. Road was empty and we reached Vikravandi in 3 hrs 15 mins. and from there, its 1.5 hrs to reach Tambaram.

Just completed Chennai - Thiruvarur trip. NH45 till vikravandi is in great shape, but Vikravandi to Banruti is bad. There were numerous pot holes, and the best you could do is to keep a steady 50kph. From Banruti to Thiruvarur roads get better and one can hold on to 80kph

Has anyone done this route recently ? Planning a trip from Pondicherry to Thiruvarur and google maps suggests NH32/SH23 which is shorter and bypasses Kumbakonam and NH36

Was wondering which would be the better route

The one suggested by Google is I think a better option. I have tried the SH23 at least till Koothanur from Mayavaram. It was very good late last year.

As regards to the Pondicherry-Mayavaram; you may get heavy traffic till Cuddalore. It easies out bit later. Chidamabaram-Mayavaram is good roads. Take bypasses for both Chidambaram and Sirkazhi.

i think that is the best route. Pondy - Chidambaram - Mayavaram - Peralam - Tiruvarur.

traffic is heavy between Pondy - Cuddalore and Sirkazhy by pass - Mayavaram Stretches. Otherwise roads are in good condition.
