Daddy:: My pick would be via sakaleshpura - kudremukha or sakaleshpura / hassan / chikamagalur / mudigere / koppa / sringeri area. There are many options via these places.
Avoid via Sulya as you need to do descend and ascend ghats to reach agumbe from Madikeri. If you go by Sulya then take via hebri to agumbe or go by kudremukha - sringeri - agumbe.
Ravi.

guys,
Whats the decent route between Madikeri to Agumbe in terms of road conditon? I can see 3 routes(via sulya/karkala/Hebri, via Sakleshpur/Kudremuk/Sringeri, via Sakleshpur/Balehonnur/Koppa) but not sure which one would be in decent condition currently. |
I would suggest via Sulya-Karkala-Hebri. This has better roads. But you have to be careful, in a few places there are only single lane roads. It is the faster of all the routes you have suggested
Sakleshpur-Kudremukh-Sringeri route can be taken but the road surface after Kottigehara is not that good.
Sakleshpur-Balehonnur route is very roundabout, so I think you can avoid it.

Hassan -Sakleshpur is the shortest route, road conditions as on today is fine, can change depending on how heavy the rains are. Run through this thread for details on the road situation
Summer sands is a beach resort and is very much on the beach side, been there few years back and was good during that time, Sorry but I have no recent updates
Summer Sands Beach Resort, Mangalore

You'll get many answers here.
Please check my travelogue, page 4 from post 70 onwards.

Hmm, while you can rely on old travelogues for route information, you can't use them for road conditions.
These days roads are changing on a weekly basis. Since 4 days, it has been raining as if a giant tub has been turned over this place. I don't recall seeing this intensity of rain in the recent years. Imagine the hardest rain in Bangalore and then imagine that staying on for 2-4 hours and this repeating 3-4 times a day. Bangalore would be flooded like crazy with half a day of this stuff. But in the coast we can handle it, but not the roads.
The roads here are precision engineered to give up within a week of monsoon. In June the rain was very light, so the roads held up much longer, got the PWD engineers/contractors worried for a while. But now they can rest at ease, the rains from last 4 days is capable for digging the hell out of most roads here. Yesterday I drove the NH-17 and it broken up in most of the usual places. At Padubidri, they have dumped huge rocks in one deep pothole to warn the drivers during daytime. At night, pray you can see it in time.
So, we are back to monitoring the roads week-to-week, let the art of road flourish.
@Samurai - its anybodys guess the travelogue reference was with respect to the attractions he asked around those places.
To be more specific - please refer that for some info around managalore / Udupi. I guess the giant tub of water has not washed away those :)
Art or not I do not want to debate. Thats not my turf.
laluks, I am not sure what you trying to imply, what kind of debate? This thread has been about road conditions for 3 straight years. And thanks to the government corruption, it will remain so.
I specifically mentioned that while you can rely on old travelogues for route information, you can't use them for road conditions. Is that not so? Why are you so offended about it? Did I make any personal remark to you?
@aka_iitd: Beaches are generally closed during June-August because the sea is too wild. Many beach resorts also close during monsoon for yearly renovation. Also, it is hard to predict the road condition of mid-August right now.

Just back from the trip.. Blr - madikeri - mudbidri - agumbe - chikmagalur - Blr. 30 kms before & after Madikeri is bad..and a few pot holes near Agumbe ghat..rest of the entire stretch is good. It was a relief to see cream road from Sampajie till Bantwala as we did that part in dark & rain.
The dug up stretch of hassan road was irritating.. the traffic in that road is double than of 3 years back..it has become like another mysore road.
3 days it rained non-stop (real non-stop) and i assume it is still raining there..and we managed to scale Thadiyandamol as well which was deserted within blasting wind & rain.
Daddy great to know you had a nice drive, will be heading to Mangalore probably next week hope to see lots of rain:)
I received these photos through email and when i checked with the forwarder ,he told he got it from Mangalorean.com & Gulfkannadiga.com . These pictures were really meant to be shared.
I have seen rains in Mangalore but never this Havoc. Most of these floods are man made
nbr, thanks for the pictures...
Actually floods is not new for the coast, as mentioned by you all are man made...
I just wonder what will happen to this thread if Shiradi ghat conditions improve(or atleast wont worsen further), as many people(including me) have stopped asking for road condition updates
I am happy that rains have started(atleast the power cuts should reduce soon)
Looking forward for a drive thru shiradi in couple of weeks
