Re: Pune-Silliguri

See the route Google maps if we enter Pune to Siliguri:

Pune, Maharashtra 411027, India to Siliguri, West Bengal, India - Google Maps

You may drag the map to make the route safer / more convenient.

I think that HVK had mentioned about this route somewhere on TBHP before.

Since you are in a hurry, why not contemplate this route ?
Experts like HVK can give the pros / cons for this route

EDIT: Google maps this route via Jalpaiguri:

Too long. Bad roads on NH9 in MH and KA. Congested Hyd-Vijaywada stretch thanks to road widening, alternative via Khammam has bad roads. Bad roads in Orissa from AP border to Khurda. Traffic jams at check posts in AP-OR and OR-WB.
If you take this route, contemplate Day 1 halt at Vizag, Day 2 at Calcutta and arrival in Siliguri late on Day 3.

Route2: Pune - Nagpur- Sambalpur- Jamshedpur-Asansol-Moregram-Silliguri
NO point in taking some bad roads from OR to JH to go via Jamshedpur. Maoist problems too in JH. Consider Route 3.

Route3:Pune - Nagpur- Sambalpur- Kolkotta-Moregram-Silliguri
Best route. Road good in MH. OK in CG, but don't expect high speeds. Even OR has good roads, although some stretches around Sambalpur and Keonjhar are bad. Avoid night driving between Jashpur & Kharagpur. Lovely expressway from Kharagpur onwards till Darjeeling More. Avoid NH34 from Calcutta, prefer the NH2 route via Bardhaman & Darjeeling More, connecting with NH34 at Morgram via Siuri and Rampurhat. Even the SH is OK condition.

Day 1 - Raipur
Day 2 - Calcutta
Day 3 - Siliguri

Quote:
Route4: Any other route
None.

All plans call for some zestful driving, early morning starts and late arrivals at destination.
facilities poor.

Road condition info for Nagpur-Calcutta based on a friend's trip a couple of weeks ago.

You can refer teh route to Siliguri in this log book of mine:

Sir, I will suggest the below route.

Raipur ---> Sambalpur ----> Manguli squre (Cuttack) ----> balasore ----> Jaleswar ------> Kolkata.

Manguli squre (Cuttack) ---> Bhadrak is excellent GQ 4-lane road.

Bhadrak----> Balasore ....Good road GQ in progress. many diversion but You can maintain a good speed.

Road is good.
Good facility all over the route.
No Maoist fear....
Take less time then route via Sambalpur ---> Keonjhar ---> Kolkata route.

Re: Pune-Silliguri

HVK: Rahul will be with his family (wife & Kid) ONLY. He will be the only driver. I personally think that he should not push it beyond a point.

He does not have the road driving experience that you have

He was also mentioning 1st stop at Raipur which works out to @ 1000 Km from Pune.

I also suggested that he books hotels all along the route so that when he enters the city/town where he wants to halt, he does not have to go searching for a hotel.

I will suggest below two Hotels in SAMBALPUR.

-- Hotel Sheela Tower
-- Hotel Saket.

Both the hotels are in VSS marg in Sambalpur.

When you are comming from Raipur...

follow the below direction...

Stop at Ainthapali Squre(First stop for SBP town/Bus stand is near by)...>Take right Turn....> Go stright....> Go over the fly over....> Stop at Laxmi talkies Squre...Take left here
with in 100 meters you will find both the hotel on that road.

Saket hotel is on left side and other one is on right side of this road.

Agree with KALINGA. Hotel Sheela Tower is a good hotel in Sambalpur, I have also stayed there once.
To give you some more coordinates:
AS you are entering Sambalpur, you will see Hirakud Dam to the left. 8 kms from that point, you reach this Square on NH6 itself. You will see a petrol pump and a Hotel Pramod as landmarks at this junction.
Hotel Sheela Towers, Sambalpur

When you are coming in from Kharagpur on NH6, you will reach Dhulagori just before the turn off point into South Kolkata. There is a Motel Midway there on the right side of the road (towards Kharagpur), exactly 100 kms from the Kharagpur bypass (where NH60 joins it). You know you have kissed the point if you see the Dhulagori Logistics Centre.

If you don't mind going into KOlkata, then you can take the entry point through the Vidya Sagar Setu and stay at Hotel Aakash Deep at Park Circus - very easy to reach.

Hi Kalinga,

Could you please clarify, if there at the WB- OS border the outstation private vehicles have to pay some 800-1000/- tax to the pesky RTO guys.
Whats the way to avoid that ?if at all

Thanks
Rahul
