5.5 lac budget. Best in-class acceleration and handling?

Hi all,
I' am new to this forum.....working as a software engineer in Hyderabad...I' am very much into cars & bikes since i can remember.....

I' am planning to buy a new car (budget 5.5 lacs),...This is my first car...
My priorities are listed below.....(1-4, 1 being the highest)

[FONT=Helv][SIZE=2]1) - Best-in-class accelaration
2) - Best-in-class stability at cornering & high sppeds + safety equipment
(ABS is a must)
3) - Very good service backup & easy availability of spares
4) - decent mileage (10 kpl inside city driving with full A/C is good enough)

Whether it's a sedan or hatch, it doesn't matter.....

I' ve shortlisted 4 cars....(Only petrol engines)

1) Getz
2) Swift
3) Ikon
4) Indigo

Kindly share ur views & suggestions.........

bye

i would say Swift Zxi....its quick, and its good in cornerning at high speeds... you"ll need to upgrade ur rubber for better handling(in case of Zxi i dont think you will need to)...plus you get a descent mileage....aroun 11kmpl in the city and around 15kmpl..on the highway...

Look at the Fiat Petra, since u say that ABS is a must. Else, look at the Palio 1.6 sport- They dont come any more entertaining than this baby!

What else other than the Palio 1.6. (Buy it in Formula Red, it will go faster!)

From the list it would be the swift that makes a good mix.

From outside the list it would be esteem and palio 1.6

If ABS is a must, then of the 4 you've listed, I'd say go with the Swift. If its not critical, I would say go with the Ikon.

OT: By the way guys, he has a shortlist so why recommend outside his list?

Dude, the only Ikon on sale is the Flair- No one in their wildest imaginations would say that the car has good accelration- In fact, it is probably the worst among all petrol cars in teh mid size segment. Plus Ford service sucks! I have been an ikon owner in the past so I know how bad ford service can be!

One way its good Suman. He might have missed it out in the list. Bringing other cars into discussion that has all the qualities that's mentioned as requirement is no harm. Just we are highlighting him on the other options.

You want speed and handling, here goes:

1. Palio 1.6 (Yes 1100D, Red does go faster!)
2. Baleno.
3. Used Vtec.

None are on your list, but each is a performance machine.

I think you've jumped in without reading the full post, probably saw the word "Ikon" and pounced. I'm mentioning Ikon in the context of the shortlist he has made - of the list of 4 cars he has, are you telling me that the Getz & Indigo are faster than the Ikon???????

He is talking about stability & excellent road holding which is where I feel the Ikon scores over the other three....it doesn't matter if it is the Flair, the road holding capabilities are the same.

If you want to start a debate on which the best car is in the price range WITHOUT considering the 4 he has mentioned, PM me, we can continue the discussion outside the forum without increasing the number of posts we have.

Lastly, you seem to have a MAJOR grouse about Ikon, I understand you have had some lousy ownership experiences, but one swallow does not, IMHO, a summer make

Forget Ikon Flair and Getz if you are looking for performance. If you get Ikon Flair dont forget to check the threads dedicated for it for performace mods for it ( Assume that I didnt see the Indigo in you list)

Palio 1.6GTX, maybe the Petra too. Swift too would be a good buy.

1) Best in class acceleration is not provided by baleno, palio or Swift. its Esteem. Yes esteem is quicker than Baleno (Detuned by a total 3 hp) and palio(heavier at 1080). Swift and getz follow suit with swift being marginally faster.

2 ABS is available as an option in Palio 1.6 swift vxi and Getz.

3. Maruti reigns supreme here. Followed by hyundai and Fiat is third just because there is no other manufacturer to fill the gap.

4. For mileage again Maruti esteem reigns supreme. Baleno follows. Swift and Getz lie in the same region while Palio1.6 is the last due to heavy body and big engine.

Overall First place surprisingly goes to Esteem. Its quickest off the line, handles well, gives good Fuel Efficiency and has maruti backup. the only grudge in your needs would be an ABS. But other problems are tight space and dated design.

Second place goes to palio 1.6. It is quick, handles well, is robust, and has an optional ABS. The only grudge is Service backup and spares which is improving thanks to tata service backup. Its not really an issue these days. And Fuel Efficiency is ok for a 1.6 DOHC engine but least in the class.

I would give the third place to Swift. But Getz would be a contender too because I find the looks of getz to be more sportier than swift. Both have ABS, almost equal acceleration, Similar FE figures, Good service backups. Getz looks good while Swift is more advanced. Getz has better interior space and looks while Swift has better resale.

Look for Esteem or Palio 1.6
