Like GTO mentioned, there were OHC Vtecs for sale till upto early 2004 with some good discounts. These shold have been registered in 2004, but the Make & Model in the RC Book should read 2003.

As for the spares, I don't think you will have any worries at all. I see plenty of spares for even then OHC Type 1.

One potential issue though, is with what Honda terms as accessories, like the Spoilers, the double barrel exhaust tip, etc. You might have a tough time if any of these are damaged...

This is unbeleivable. I thought checking up the engine cap will tell me whether its vtec or not. can i rev the engine to see if any changes when the vtec cam kicks in? Can anyone tell me how will it behave if its a vtec. Or i think i can take to service shop and ask them to checkout and tell me whether its really vtec or not. but the next thing is can i rely these service centres? or can i ask them to give in writing or something if i pay an amount? will those guys do me xxx point checkup and give a certificate stating the condition of the vehichle? I really die to own a VTEC.

Ok for your reference these are the things you should check in order to identify a genuine OHC VTEC

1. Genuine Machine finished Enkei alloys
2. Rear Original Spoiler w/lights
3. Double Barrel Exhaust
4. Leather covered Steering Wheel & Gearknob
5. Silver finished interior console
6. Revcounter redlined at 7200 rpm
7. Engine Cover engraved with VTEC logo

Out of these most things would be possible to do if you wanted to make a fake VTEC but I think that the revcounter & engine cover would be hard & expensive to change so most people wouldn't go that far. Rest if you want more clarifications post here & I will try & post pics of the same.

What about see-through or hollow neck restraints? The August 2006 issue of BS Motoring has an article that compares the VTEC versions of the OHC and NHC. The article says nobody would go to the extent of replacing the neck restraints when trying to make an OHC look like a VTEC.

Bloody Good point Hrag!!! I forgot about that! I think BSM is right most people won't remember to change that!

Oh come on..... the Vtec is one of the very few machines in this country that hardly complains when you push her.... and it is not like every Vtec owner does a drag everytime they drive her. You have people in this forum who are passionate about their cars and push it only when are on track and treat her with respect all the time.

You cannot rely on that pal.... this problem with the ECU (I think...) was rectified on the Vtecs so it rides as smooth, if not better than a 1.5 Exi.

If one does all the visual mods, it would probably cost them as much as the difference between a OHC 1.5 Exi and a OHC Vtec, so just checking for ALL the visual differences alone should be reasonably enough.

Guys, as I mentioned earlier too, the deal is still not closed and is in middle. 20th is the deadline, the seller is considerably rich and is not interested in brokers/dealers. Perhaps my friend is the first one to contact him and seller himself has quoted the price (maybe he is unaware or some dealer has already tried to exploit him with some very unreasonable offer).

@Manson, dealers in Mumbai are trying to be smarter than they are. Maybe they are confident about their offers. Who knows some dealer has already offered this guy 3l or something and now waiting, 'Kahan jayega bachchu!'. I have personally seen the car, car has some very subtle cosmetic works, rest core things are in great condition. If deal doesn't finalize, I will tell interested people the number of seller. Don't worry, 20th is not too far.

Good News and Bad News (well, for some people)! Deal is done, 3.4L final. I saw the car again 1 hr back. But I would like to withdraw *very* from my statement about car's condition. Guys, condition is not very good, its good. Some touch-ups are needed here and there. But still core parts are okay, engine sounds very good and there is no major work at the moment. Odo reading is 52k.

As far as the damages are limited to the exteriors, it's ok (they can always be repaired). But engines and transmission are the 2 main areas the cars needs to be in damn good shape.

At 52K, the suspension may or maynot be in good shape (can't say). Clutch wont have a problem unless the guy has a habit of riding the clutch.

Some other stuff to look out for :
Power steering leakage
A/C compressor condition
Brake allingment and wear
Rear bumber bcoming loose (common prob)
Faded headlights
Honda logo on alloys (car comes with 4 logo caps).
Engine virbration (could be a sign of an accident history)

@Shan2nu. I have seen the Honda logo on alloys myself (though I didn't like the design of alloys). Rest of the things are either checked or will be checked, am not sure. As far as accident etc is concerned, there should not be any issue, the seller is a very humble person, he would have told us. Car has been driven by chauffeur so maybe he must be qualified (drives a Pajero as well) thus clutch issue should not be there. Car will go to workshop in a day or two, I will let you know about the maintenance.
