Well I guess the consumer always has a right to demand. It is to satisfy this demand that auto manufacturers spend millions to make engines more powerful, yet at a minimal cost to FE.

In my opinion, there would hardly be a significant difference in FE for automatics of Corolla and Civic. In city driving conditions say an average speed of 15-20 kmph, both autos can be expected to give around 9 kmpl.

As for Corolla auto, I am getting right now around 10.7-11.2 kmpl with more use of AC (but at 27.5C). I find that light foot and not exceeding 100 kmph does help. My driving is 70 km per working day, which takes on an average 145-160 minutes. In the morning, its is 30 kms in 50 mins, and 5 kms in 30-40 mins. In the evening it is 34 kms for around 65-70 mins.

I have checked at US EPA, ConsumerReports, and Epinions and what else and for whatever it is worth, a realistic average for Civic and Corolla auto would be around 25-30 mpg.
