Re: 2023 Hyundai Verna | Which engine + gearbox combination would you buy?

Under most circumstances I would have voted for the 1.5 Turbo DCT option. Taking the engine with the highest power output coupled with a DCT gearbox would’ve been a no-brainer. However my experience with my i20 Turbo DCT has made me change my mind.

The thing is that to be able to use that amount of power you need a chassis capable of handling the power. The i20’s chassis gives up far earlier than the engine does and what that means is that each time I try to push, I have to dial back on the throttle in order to prevent the chassis from being overwhelmed.

With the Verna’s suspension also being tuned more towards comfort I see a similar problem occurring with this car, i.e. chassis giving up much before the engine does. In a car with a good chassis I’d go for the most powerful option. In a Hyundai there’s no point in doing that. And hence its the 1.5 NA petrol with the IVT for me.

Re: 2023 Hyundai Verna | Which engine + gearbox combination would you buy?

I'd go for the 1.5 Turbo MT. Dual clutch transmissions are pretty complex and have a long history of unreliability. Also, the Verna is one of the few mass market non-SUV cars with an engine having a power rating of more than 150 bhp which has an MT option as standard. I also don't have any interest in ATs right now. Though I don't think I have any business commenting here, as my licence is still 5 months away!

Voted 1.5NA+CVT

I have been driving a civic hybrid CVT for 15 years now and see it as the perfect gearbox for city traffic. High reliability and good mileage. DCTs are bound to fail in our stop and go traffic and high temperatures during summers in Delhi.

Re: 2023 Hyundai Verna | Which engine + gearbox combination would you buy?

Cannot vote but I would go for 1.5 turbo DCT. I always would go for highest power engine not for pedal to metal kind of driving but for the safety and comfort of reserve power, when needed. Automatics are way too convenient than manuals for a sedate and careful driver. DCTs need to be driven carefully (using Park rather than pressing the brakes at a traffic signal , for instance) and they can give good and long service. Also highest specification car for a given model is always preferred by me as it has all the bells and whistles that a manufacturer wishes to showcase. For example Verna 1.5 turbo has Stop and Go feature in ADAS which is great for driving in bumper to bumper kind of traffic.

Re: 2023 Hyundai Verna | Which engine + gearbox combination would you buy?

My choice would be the 1.5 Turbo Petrol engine. In fact, that engine is (in my personal view) the sole USP of this car. The car looks very underwhelming, and according to the review, even handling is average. But the turbo petrol engine is surely something that stands out and for me that is the strongest point in favor of the car. With the 1.5NA engine, the car suddenly looks quite average to me and I would not recommend that to anyone.

On the gearbox, I am not a fan of DCTs. On the other hand, I love 6-speed MTs. I am so glad that Hyundai decided to offer 6-speed MT with the 1.5L Turbo Petrol engine! That for me is a sweet combination that suddenly makes this average looking, average handling car quite desirable!

Therefore, I voted for "1.5 Turbo Petrol Engine with 6-speed MT"!

Re: 2023 Hyundai Verna | Which engine + gearbox combination would you buy?

I just drove the Verna IVT today and I'm impressed - this is a car I'd happily suggest to someone who wants something smooth and is a gentle driver. In fact, it's reasonably peppy too for most purposes in the city. The Honda City feels flimsy and outdated in perspective.

But I don't think the 1.5 Turbo suits the car - this is honestly a relaxed car and such a powerful engine seems a bit of an overkill. For an enthusiastic experience, I'd rather have the VAG siblings because the driving experience is brilliant.

Hence voting for 1.5 IVT.

Re: 2023 Hyundai Verna | Which engine + gearbox combination would you buy?

My choice would definitely be the 1.5L NA with IVT as it serves the purpose just as well in the city. Most of my driving is within the confines of Mumbai and it would suit my needs to the T as the motor is adequately refined and peppy. The added convenience of the autobox helps relieve the left leg. Also the FE of turbo petrols goes for a toss with varying throttle inputs during city runs(my Skoda Rapid 1.0 TSI gave me the wisdom here&#128514
The suspension set up also compliments the comfort oriented approach of the sedan.
So 1.5L IVT it is.

Re: 2023 Hyundai Verna | Which engine + gearbox combination would you buy?

If one already has a car for city duties and this one will be second car for highway/ outstation runs then eyes closed 1.5 Turbo + MT. With this combo it will be outstanding to drive on the open roads. The handling can be more or less fixed with a good stiffer springs from aftermarket (Cobra should come up with their springs line-up shortly; they already have for Slavia/ Virtus).

If this will be the only car, then 1.5 Turbo + DCT.

Re: 2023 Hyundai Verna | Which engine + gearbox combination would you buy?

Even though the 1.5 NA petrol with CVT automatic will tick the boxes correctly for those who just need a family car to ferry their wife and kids from point A to point B in great comfort, my personal preference would be the 1.5 turbo petrol with DCT. It's irritating to digest the fact that phase-2 BS6 emission norms has forced Hyundai to discontinue their diesels permanently.

Voted for the 1.5L turbo-petrol MT.

I always prefer the more powerful engine available. & I'm averse to automatics so selected the MT.

Voting for the 1.5L turbo-petrol with dual-clutch AT .
Aligning with GTO on this. But can I please not get the ugly looking DRLs at the front.

1.5 Turbo is the biggest USP for me in the Verna and I still enjoy a well shifting MT so maybe a last "pure" choice.
The DCT is also an option if others would drive it too but with the "DSG fund" attached.
For people voting for the 1.5 Turbo :

Arent there speed limits/cameras in your respective cities?

Kolkata is full of speed cameras and 60 km/hr strictly monitored.
This nullifies the urge to opt for the quicker 1.5L turbo engines.

There are very few remaining stretches of roads (that are traffic free) where you can safely drive a bit quicker.

Highway driving would probably be 5% of my commute.

No manuals, no DCTs for me.

Hence, easy choice = NA Petrol + CVT

And I would never buy the 1.5 Turbo Verna with that usage

That usage would warrant a compact 1.2 NA petrol hatchback with the transmission of your choice. But if you think the 1.2 is an overkill, try switching the AC on in a 1.0 NA and handle the stop go traffic. Our 1.0 K10B gives 10-12 kmpl at best while the 1.2 engines are consistent at 14-15kmpl under similar conditions and so much easier to drive especially involving speeds under 20kmph. Could also be the driving style but in the end whatever suits you the best.

Having the performance at hand to get out of a sticky situation is as important as good braking IMO.

Oh I know what I need. I was curious about your situation and where you get the bang for the buck for a Turbo.
