Make your own smart car tracking system

http://wiki.ehow.com/Make-a-Smart-Ca...a-Mobile-Phone

This guide tells you how to make a smart car tracking system which will help locate your car if its stolen, provided the police and cell networks are cooperative.

Watched it on Headlines Today. A car was stolen(scorpio) from delhi, fitted with a GSM based car security system. The owner was able to recover the vehicle within 10 hrs from Hissar with the help of the device.

I have had googled the device name and had found out the website.
Amsaki HomSafe Limited. It costs around 10k.

once car is stolen you will have to call the phone in car and be on hold for a real long time especially if the thieves have parked car somewhere.
also what if they dont really talk about where they are/give hints about the location?
and considering our weather and the amount of dust that goes into dashboard, will the phone survive a few months in there?

Hi! Cheap_Deal, there is no phone in the car, there is a box in which the sim card is placed. Sim card connects to different towers when the car moves, same as in mobile thing. Device has a memory attached to it which stores the location and the time. It sends out sms to the owner about the location and the time.

I guess this is the principle behind it. For more information you can check out there website and contact them.

There was an article about the same devie fitted on the Scorpio which enabled the cops and the owner to track it down. Was in today's TOI, Bangalore edition. The device costs about 10K, and there is a monthly rental of about 150/- bucks for the SIM card usage. Seems the cops were wary at first, but then joined in.

The Scorpio was tracked down as being parked in a public parking area of some hospital, and the watchman there reported a guy in a T shirt and shorts who disembarked from the vehicle, and hopped along with another guy on a Pulsar and left.

Micro Technologies (India) Ltd.

This is the commercial version of the product. We were invited to their factory somewhere in New Bombay for a demo and test unit but I need to part some time for this.

Yup, saw a 30 mt session on Headlines today about the device.
It sounded promising, they were taking the stolen Scorpio as a success case. The sales guy was pushing it a little too hard, overshadowing the owner experience.

This is just an alarms with SMS facilty. Does no company offer a proper tracker in India ?

Below is an interesting story which involves a proper tracking device.

Tracker is a system very popular with High-performance & Luxury car owners in Europe but then they have a satellite tracking system for the cars. Also for such cars, the Insurance companies there provide sops to allow them to fit the rather expensive systems by giving discount in the premiums. They also inflate the premiums of expensive cars not fitting with these systems.

It has a good success rate in recovering stolen cars but for that you also have to credit their Police organisation.
