B&H - but its an Indian ITC brand now ...

My smoking curve, starting from my college days, has gone through classic->gold flake->wills navy cut->gold flake->gauloise->B&H

My all time favorite is Gauloise - and its tough to get it in India :(

Tough??? Impossible is a better term. Never seen a french ciggie in India, not even in the bloody duty free shops.

I was a passive smoker of Chennai traffic-time oil burners. Pneumonia struck me. Found a job in a smaller city (Ahmedabad) and moved there early this year. The CNG burners here now are like a breath of fresh air. My brands? HP Turbojet or IOC Extramile. Only desi brands

Rranjith and others of your ilk
Having been a smoker for 29 years and having quit it one day about six months ago cutting it down from 40 to zero, let me tell you - these well intentioned words have no meaning whatsoever to a smoker. Nicotine addiction is not like addiction to sweets or red meat or addiction to movies etc that you can just exercise some mental control and you are off it.
Ask any one who has been a smoker for a few years and chances are that he is not particularly proud of his habit. All long term smokers harbour a secret wish in their heart of hearts to quit and those who quit do so out of their own volition. No amount of nice words or threats or emotional blackmailing work for them. If potential health hazard was a reason to quit doctors wouldn't be smokers.
There are three types of people in this world - smokers, non-smokers and ex-smokers. Non-smokers can never understand smokers. Ex-smokers to a certain extent can. Though I agree that some behave like God and flaunt their quit and secretly take up some other form of tobacco like gutka or khaini etc.
And from my own experience I can say, let the sane adult decide for himself. Don't urge him to quit. It is often counter productive. I quit because I wanted to have the control of my life in my own hand and not allow Mr Nicotine to decide what I would do and dictate terms to me.

Yes it is Harry. Most ashamed about it now when I think. In those days in the late 70s I fell for the Charminar ad by Jackie Shroff. In fact that ad campaign made Jackie into whatever he is today. If you don't know it was JS driving an open hood CJ3B in the tea gardens of Munnar and smoking.
I clearly remember the macho image that we used to associate with smoking. Much later we got exposed to Marlboro and Camel ad campaigns when India opened up. When I realised that I was taken for a huge ride by advertisers it was too late.
But I must say it took me about five years of quiet pondering to quit. It is not an easy task. I hope I stay quit forever. And I have deep respect for those who are fighting this battle like me.

@Sudipto - Sir its never too late to make a wise decision. I am not a smoker. Yes i do light a CIg but thats only while partying which is once in 2-3 months so i dont think i qualify as a smoker. Its just for fun over few drinks at that time and thats it. Personally i advise everyone who smoke on daily basis to quit as we all know its not good for us. Easy to say than implement though!

@ AShish - Good for you

According to some old timer's belief - you are not to be trusted. A man should have at least one vice , they say and never trust one who has none.
