Love the last picture. Nice lineup.

Hot Wheels Creator and Mattel toy company co-founder Elliot Handler died last Thursday from heart failure, the New York Times reports. He was 95 years old. A designer with an entrepreneurial spirit, Handler is credited with dreaming up such toys as Barbie and Chatty Cathy, but car fanatics everywhere will likely remember him for his later creation, Hot Wheels toy cars.
Born in 1916, Handler began his career sculpting light fixtures after studying industrial design at California’s Art Center College of Design. His big break came in 1939, when Handler and wife Ruth started making costume jewelry and dollhouse furniture in the garage of their Southern California home. There, he and partner Harold “Matt” Matson formed Mattel toys – a name derived from the combination of Matt and Elliot.
After seeing wild sales success with his dolls, Handler turned his attention to die-cast toy cars. Mattel enlisted the help of designers from automakers like GM to reinvent the toy car. This led to the invention of a manufacturing process for fast-spinning plastic wheels. Handler called his new product “Hot Wheels” when the toy line arrived on store shelves in 1968. In the more-than-40 years since the toy’s introduction, over 10,000 unique Hot Wheels models have been produced, including such famous designs as “King ‘Kuda,” the “Beatnik Bandit,” and “Evil Weevil.”
“He loved coming up with new cars,” his brother, Sid Handler, told the New York Times. “He was a quiet, kind man. I think that’s why he liked [designing] toys so much. They make people happy.”
We tend to agree with that last sentiment. Like many auto enthusiasts, our fascination with cars began with toys like Hot Wheels. One of the highlights of our collective childhood was seeing those colorful, outrageously styled, chrome-laden cars glistening in the package every time we went to the store. And when mom let us pick one out to take home, life was most certainly good. Thanks for all the memories, Mr. Handler.

Siddvi, unique Cadillac. Sometimes, models with no opening features are prefered due to their uniform shut lines which results in an excellent fit. Your Cadillac is a fine example of just that.

Now on to some thing different - Books on cars and scale models:

The automobile (in all its forms) never fails to fascinate me. The passion is so intense that I end up splurging quite a bit on it.

In addition to scale models, I also have quite a few books on cars and bikes. When it comes to magazines: ever since the Indian Auto journal started way back in June 1986, I have almost every edition of the magazine. Same with Car and Bike, Auto India, Autocar India and Bike India. I used to also read Overdrive right since its inception (in September 1998) but of late, there was hardly anything useful / knowledgeable in it and in a fit of frustration, I sold off my entire collection of Overdrive, Top Gear (another third class, useless magazine) and Car India magazines to the raddiwalla!

Today, a thought crossed my mind: that of combining some of my 1:18 scale models with my books and this was the outcome -

Wow that's great. I think every one have a similar collection of books, mine are a little lesser.

The last harley with a side car is awesome, where did you got that one.

P.S. I sold my magazine's form 1984 onwards (if I remember correctly, I had a first issue of Indian Auto) some years ago :(.

Hello Manish,

The Harley model is in 1:18 scale by Maisto. This is the only Harley model I have. I got it because of the side car.

Hey Amar, this is one of the BEST photo montages on this thread !! Loved your books.:thumbs up

Thank you Ravi. Posting images of just scale models was getting a bit boring. I wish I could add images of my entire book / magazine collection but space constraints prevented me from doing so.

I am presently working on my latest addition, Lancia Fulvia from Auto Art and it is also the first time that I will be working on an Auto Art model. All changes will be cosmetic.

It was only due to Rakhesh that I could add this model to my collection.

I am adding a few images of my 1:18 scale Lancia Fulvia model by Auto Art.

This model is actually a plane body version and I am trying to give it a "rally" type look by adding decals that I have made using vinyl tape.

The modification is not complete as yet as some more decals are to be added.

My friend Amit who is a good photographer has taken these images

Some more images of the Fulvia that I could not upload due to internet problem..................
