In this thread, the first few car snaps have been clicked while the car is in the cloud shadow, with the direct sunlight hitting the background. The end result is of course very good.

Is this (i) to split the photograph into two halfs where the in-focus car bridges the halves, and hence ends up holding our attention, (ii) avoid harsh Indian sunlight on the car from the top, which is always the worst way to light up a car, or (iii) did the colour of the car make this choice - the accents of the metallic grey colour (+ of the alloys) shine out in subdued lighting.

it had a 2.5L 4 cylinder engine with a six speed auto box. surprisingly it drove way better than the mini cooper i had for the weekend before that.

2013 VW beetle comes with a 2.5L five cylinder engine (i think same as VW Jetta used to come with in North America).

Re: The Auto-Image thread

Tried some lighting effects, no post processing-just used only macro mode, right off the mobile camera:

Photos were taken at Algonquin Park.
I typically use zipcars (that's where mini cooper came from) or rent from AVIS which almost all the times upgrade me to something nice (have got a BMW 328, Beetle, Chryslar 300 Hemi during last three weekends, when I got the Beetle, I saw that they had a Jaguar XF too).

You've brought back fond memories for me, thanks. Had visited Algonquin some years back in the fall. There was a trail there which ran alongside the old railroad and a pristine lake. Simply beautiful, I would even go as far as to say it's heavenly. I also have fond memories of Horseshoe resort and a lakeside cottage by Wood's Bay. Hope to be back there someday.

No effect. It's a straight shot with one stop less from meter reading.

Sorry for this late reply. Your first question is not very clear to me.
Unless by saying two halves, you meant the subject and the background. Anyway, I’ll try to answer what exactly I did.

Morning August sun in Rajasthan wasn’t exactly right for a car shoot. To top that, we had silver cars only. If you notice from the pictures, there was no trace of clouds till mid afternoon. So only way to get something meaningful was to look for best possible light and shade combined location (pic below isn’t there on the thread).
It was a bit of rush as we had to drive the cars within a limited time frame also.

So the best possible way to overcome this situation was to meter the brightest part. In this case it was strong sunlight reflecting on silver surface. Spot meter that part and go one stop open with manual exposure. By doing this, one can expect an acceptable tonal range all across. Rest, I had to depend on Mark II’s dynamic range. A darker shade would have been even tough to record in tonal range scale. But probably it would have been more dramatic.

Haha! sorry for the confusion, and thanks, can't really expect you to monitor every post in this thread (especially when I haven't even quoted you).

What I was wondering was, in the first snap on that thread, the car is in the shade, while the background is in the sun. So you gave the answer to that in the first quote above.
