How different is a cloth with the tricolour & the chakra from the cake with the same tricolour & chakra ?

Same here, when the flag is being disgraced everyday by so many people, then why just target sachin?

Well, on one hand you say it is ok to paint the flag on your body. Are you not supposed to wash it off ever?

What are the people and the media angry about? Sachin cutting the cake and dis-respecting our national flag or that the Indian cricket team gave such a pathetic performance in the world cup? I am guessing the latter is the real reason. Would this have been such a big issue if India had reached the semi's, final's or won the world cup? I think we all know the answer to that question. As for all the "patriotic" Indians who are wild with anger at Sachin's dis-respectful act, what about the tons of paper flags thrown on the roads out of moving cars after August 15 and January 26 every year? I have seen torn paper flags lying in garbage cans by the side of the roads.

US of A is quite lenient in letting its citizens flaunt the national flag on clothes, cakes, etc. I am not sure whether Indian Govt allows national flag on cakes.
If it does, then no fuss.
If it doesn't, then obviously Sachin & Co (& The HC) were ignorant.

The Flag Code of India . not sure how up-to-date it is though.

Some points:

Explanation 4. – The disrespect to the Indian National Flag means and includes-
(e) using the Indian National Flag as a portion of costume or uniform of any description or embroidering or printing it on cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins or any dress material;

(f) putting any kind of inscription upon the Indian National Flag;

(j) draping the Indian National Flag over the hood, top, and sides or back or on a vehicle, train, boat or an aircraft or any other similar object;

Respecting the flag is a necessary symbolic act. But it does not follow that all those who respect the flag are patriots (e.g. some of our hypocrite-politicians). I have always maintained that if we can do an honest day's work without pulling down our fellow-Indians, and even better, helping some of our fellow-Indians go up in life, that is a much better example of patriotism than mere symbolism like saluting the flag (or going to temple/mosque/church or whatever). Similarly a patriotic individual in my sense could occasionally fail to respect the flag through oversight-- it could be nothing worse than an honest mistake.

Well said rks. But sports people are ambassadors of our country & a very famous one like sachin should have been aware of what he was doing when he cut that cake. The fact that the indian diplomat was also with him could have put him off, nevertheless.

Guys, This is being done just because the media knows that teh public will lap up anything done by the men in blue thats even an inch outta line --- Do you think if this pic had been taken 2 days after India winning the WC and Sachin hammering away with high hundreds in the semis and finals ??? NO WAYS , coz then the Media wud know that the country wudnt be bothered even if he burnt the National flag .

Its just another case of Media exploiting the publics sentiments ..... and as RT pointed out , what about washing of the tri color of the face !!! Thats also abusing the tri color ....

Guys, there is a lot of difference between you & me disrespecting the flag being such ignorant nincompoops, but a imminent sports personality in a foreign country with the media glare is bound to get publicised & questioned.

@khaadu. i do agree about the first part. If India had done well & sachin had also done well, then these photos have no value at all. But thats being hypothetical, let's be real & expose our players' faithfulness to the nation that looks up to them & pays them in kind as well as in cash.

To those, who think they should desecrate the flag because many others do it on Jan 26 and Aug 15, I have nothing to say.

Coming back to whatever Sachin did, I would ask one question to myself. What if I was in his place? I know, I would not have cut the cake. Not that I know a great deal about Indian law or I am any more patriotic than others, but it just doesn't feel right, especially when you very well know that it's the national flag which you are cutting. So, I think whatever he did was absolutely wrong.

About media, less said, the better. They will do anything to gain TRP or cheap publicity. Sometimes, they accidentally end up doing good things in the process. (Like all those sting operations with politicians/bureaucrats).
