"Dubai: In a daring robbery, armed men burst into a jewellery store in Wafi City in two cars and made off with a huge amount of jewellery last night, police and witnesses said."

both cars were stolen

An A8 and a Beemer 7 Series, both stolen and both dumped and burnt by the robbers immediately after the robbery.

This heist has left most people here totally stunned because this sort of thing never happens here - or even in the region. It was also the scale and manner in which it was done because they actually drove INTO a Mall, Hollywood style, parked the car outside the outlet they wanted to rob and drove out. The only pictures are from members of the public on their phone cams (and I'm sure the Mall's CCTV too, but that isnt available - yet).

The Mall was the swish and rather upmarket Wafi City which is about 200 meters from where I live.

Like I said, people are stunned.

Initially when I read it ... I thought to myself that it must be some kind of joke as these kinda things NEVER HAPPEN IN DUBAI !! Though I wonder what are the chance of them getting caught ... and how the **** did they just drive into the Mall , just hope they not Indian Nationals -- it cud m ake things bad for Indians there .

Our chaps are usually involved in Commercial Fraud and not daring robberies - we dont have what it takes for stuff like that. We prefer making money without endangering ourselves - Russel Peters may expand on that point sometime....

Ajmat is right - it looks like a very European type of crime. Caucasian anyway. If they were Indian or Asian they wouldnt target Bin Hendi in Wafi City which is a very upscale sort of place selling small quantities of designer jewellery - Asians would head towards the Gold Souq and try Joy Alukkas perhaps. They will get bucketloads of 22ct gold there - not a few delicate diamond or some other stone-encrusted 'designer' jewellery. Though this morning's report did say 150 Million worth of Jewellery gone in 124 seconds, most of 'designer' jewellery carry astronomical prices for the design and the designer name - not the intrinsic value of the metal.

The target is very western, so perhaps the criminals are too!

Yes the choice of transportation is typically western gangster - Indians would've preferred some old beat up Corolla or Civic (why waste money on transportation?), Arabs and others would prefer Nissan Patrols or Landcruisers, Filipinos would go for garish Lancers with NoS and Ralliart stickers. But these guys chose upscale cars which are typically european.

And burnt them after the job too! They decided wasting those expensive cars was better than leaving even a bit of a trail that could be followed. Definitely not what Indians (or most Asians) would have done.

If it were Indians (other Asians), they would most likely have been caught when they were trying to sell the getaway cars and make a few bucks there too.

I guess the getaway cars were stolen cars?

Can't believe. Now, the malls will become more strict I think.

The choice of cars were brilliant and it would be a difficult task to hunt down the robbers. I hope the authorities attain success in nabbing them.

The Black Audi is definitely an S8 a la Ronin. Cant make out about the White one. Thats just insane. Straight out of a movie. S8s would be preferred for the power, the brute strength of the A8 to withstand impacts as well as Quattro. Unbelievable.
