Sports and Athletics Thread

Tokyo 2020 turned out be the best ever Olympic Games in Indian history with athletes winning 7 medals in total. The cherry on top was undoubtedly Neeraj Chopra's individual gold in Javelin throw event. This mega achievement has certainly given Indian Athletics / Sports a much needed big push.

Of late we have witnessed some great achievements by Indians in the world of sports. Picking the recent two-
  • Just a month ago India's Nikhat Zareen won the Women's World Boxing Championships in Turkey, becoming only the fifth Indian woman to be crowned world champion.
  • As recent as yesterday, Neeraj Chopra won silver at 2022 Paavo Nurmi games(Finland) Javelin throw event with a 89.30 m throw thereby bettering his own previous national record!
This prompts me to initiate a thread on Sports and Athletics wherein the achievements of our compatriots as well as others across the globe can be shared and discussed.

Neeraj Chopra wins Gold at 2022 Kuortane Games!

Another impressive performance from the reigning Javelin Olympic Champion. Although the gold winning throw(86.69m) wasn't anywhere close to his record throw last week, it is absolutely heartening to see an Indian athelete performing consistently in the international circuit. Hope he brings more accolades to the nation and inspire many more young Indians.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce clocks 10.67sec to win Paris Diamond League.

She is an amazing athlete. Petite but full of energy. She's got the best start among her peers and dominates the track like anything. Can't believe she is 35 years old and still clocking consistant record timings.

In many 100m videos, her legs look blurred due to her speed. Amazing to watch. One of my long time favorites along with BOLT .

I have been waiting since 88 for someone to break that Flo-Jo’s WR. While I am not doubting Flo-Jo’s capabilities, that run was aided by strong wind, which for some strange reason, the equipment did not record it!
I hope either Thompson-Sarah or Fraser-Pryce can break that 34 years old record before they end their careers.

I might have watched the above video, more than couple of times since morning, for the amazing commentary as well. It was just an amazing performance from her to knock off around 3/4th of a second from the previous record. Her performance was on a similar scale compared to Karsten Warholm, when he broke the record for mens 400m hurdles last year.
