Re: Reintroducing Cheetahs in India

I have been questioning the very basis of this unfortunate experiment with nature. The species is not native to India( unlike the Asiatic cheetah) ,India is no longer the pristine natural wonder it used to be with the haphazard crazy urbanisation which surely is now affecting the forest areas in some way through temperature, moisture , even microorganism level changes. Perhaps the poor animals are simply unable to adapt. But it has been one giant ego trip after another for the powers that be. The original species intended were the lions of Gir who are now overpopulated in their area. But the state govt is refusing the translocation as it might lose the USP.

Quote:
The Madhya Pradesh forest department has refused to provide information under the Right to Information Act on management of cheetahs brought from Africa and their cubs born in India.

In response to a request filed by wildlife activist Ajay Dubey, the department cited Section 8(1)(a) of the RTI Act, which allows a public authority to withhold information if its disclosure would prejudicially affect the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security, strategic, scientific, or economic interests of the State, relations with a foreign State, or lead to the incitement of an offence.

Re: Reintroducing Cheetahs in India

Yet another Namibian Cheetah dies in Kuno National Park, MP.

Quote:
Namibian cheetah, Pawan, died in the wild at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday, an official said.

The male cheetah, Pawan, was found lying near the edge of a swollen nullah amidst bushes without any movement at around 10.30 AM on Tuesday, as per a statement issued by the office of the Additional Principal Chief Conservation of Forest (APCCF) and Director of Lion Project, Uttam Sharma.

Veterinarians were informed and a closer inspection disclosed that the front half of the cheetah's carcass, including the head, was inside the water. No external injuries were seen anywhere on the body, as per the statement.

The preliminary cause of death seems to be drowning. Further details will be provided after the postmortem report is received, it said.

With the death of Pawan, KNP is left with 24 cheetahs, including 12 adults and as many cubs.

India considered sourcing cheetahs from Somalia, Tanzania, Sudan to avoid adaptation challenges
Quote:
India considered sourcing new cheetahs from Somalia, Tanzania, Sudan and other range countries closer to the equator or in the Northern Hemisphere to avoid biorhythm complications observed in big cats brought from Southern Hemisphere countries like South Africa and Namibia, according to official records.

Due to the differences in circadian rhythms between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, some cheetahs developed thick winter coats during the Indian summer and monsoon last year, anticipating the African winter (June to September).

Three of these cheetahs -- a Namibian female and two South African males -- died after wounds beneath their winter coats, on their backs and necks, became infested with maggots and led to blood infections.

Four cheers at MP's Kuno park cheetah Neerva gives birth to cub quartet

Quote:
Cheetah Neerva has given birth to four cubs at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh's Sheopur district, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said on Monday and hailed their arrival as a boost to the project that restored a species which vanished from India decades ago.

Prior to this, 17 cheetah cubs had been born at the KNP, where the fastest land animal on Earth was translocated from Namibia more than two years ago. With 12 of those cubs surviving, the count of cheetahs was last reported to be 24. With the birth of four more cubs, their count has gone up to 16.

This is super good news. All wildlife, must be protected and flourish. Not for us, for generations to come!
